Nat Balloon Classic

The National Balloon Classic started today and runs through August 6th in Indianola. WHO-TV reports evening flights fire up at 6:30 p.m.
There are some new balloons featured this year, including a purple people-eater, panda, beaver, and an eagle. There's a nite-glow next Wednesday and Thursday at dusk, and fireworks tomorrow night and next Saturday at 9; and a parade in Idianola tomorrow at 11a.m.

Health Screenings at Urbandale Food Pantry

Starting Wednesday, the Urbandale Food Pantry will offer health screenings to area residents, in partnership with the Polk County Health Department. The screenings being offered will change from month to month. They're free, but you can make a donation if you choose to. They'll screen for blood sugar, blood pressure, bone density, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in August.

Gavins Point Releases Slowly Coming Down

The Army Corps of Engineers says it'll lower the releases from the Gavins Point Dam to 40,000 cubic feet per second, a tad higher than the usual rate, by the end of September. The Des Moines Register reports officials expect that to return the Missouri River back inside its' banks. Iowa officials say releases will have to get under 70,000 before many areas are dry near the river. The Corps expects releases at Gavins to hit 40,000 cubic feet per second by Oct. 1.

Van Bike Hit and Run

Des Moines police are still investigating last night's hit and run involving a bicyclist and a van. KCCI reports the victim says he the van chasing a group of teens in the 1000 block of E. University. As he neared a gas station, the van appeared to be following him. When he left the QuikTrip, he says the van jumped the curb, and hit his bike, knocking him to the sidewalk. The van disappeared. The driver's described as a black man in his 40's with short black hair.

Teens Body Recovered from Des Moines River

Authorities have recovered the remains of a teen who vanished Wednesday night trying to rescue a dog from the Des Moines River. KCCI reports Witnesses say 16-year old Marco Arroyo dive in, but never come up. The body was found in the river, near Keosaqua this morning.

Regents Consider Cuts Next Week

Iowa's Board of Regents will take up possible program cuts to meet a 5.5% state funding cut when they meet next week. A proposed budget provides $449-million in state funding for the 2012 budget year, down from $474-million in 2011. The regents approved a 5% tuition hike in March, but with student enrollment up, the increased revenue won't keep pace with increased demand for faculty and services.

ISU Raised Less in Fiscal 2011

Iowa State University raised $342.3 million in fiscal year 2011, down 12% from last year's record. The Des Moines Register reports ISU officials say most of the decline was due to the end of stimulus and other federal funding. Those funds went to improve student education and supports faculty research by funding educational projects, financial aid, buildings, equipment and extension activities.

Branstad Vetoes Working Poor Tax Credit

Gov. Branstad's rejected a bill giving an income tax credit to the working poor. A spokesperson says the governor wants a complete overhaul of the state's tax code, including property taxes. Democrats say the bill would have given a tax cut to 240,000 Iowa families earning less then $45,000/year.

Cop Busted for Dog Theft

A Cedar Rapids police officer's been charged with third degree burglary after investigators say he took two dogs from a house, not her own. KCCI reports 36-year old Robyn Obadal was arrested at police headquarters today. The incident happened over the weekend. She's been freed on bond, and the department's put her on administrative leave pending an internal review.

ISU Search

The search firm looking for a new ISU President, says it has a list of 50-names. Daniel Parker of Parker Executive Search told the 18-member Iowa State University presidential search committee today that at least a dozen of them are qualified for the job. The candidates have asked for confidentiality, and KCCI reports the final candidates will be vetted in a public interview process, set right now for this fall.

Wind Energy Project Scrapped

A planned $400 million stored-energy park near Dallas Center have been scrapped after a report raised questions about its viability. KCCI reports the Iowa Stored Energy Park Agency plan would have taken wind energy during off-peak hours, and pumped compressed air to an aquifer 3,000 feet down and bring it back to the surface during peak hours. The problem: geological tests found the reservoir wouldn't work for a project this size.

Guard Return

Families and friends welcomed home busloads of Iowa National Guard troops yesterday on the final leg of their journey home from Afghanistan. Whoops and whistles, hugs and tears met the returning soldiers of the Davenport-based Iowa National Guard unit. All 3-thousand state National Guard troops are expected to return from their one-year assignment by the first week in August.

State Ordered to Inspect Mercy Medical Centere

A federal judge has ordered a state inspection of Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines and its affiliates. The federal order was issued after regulators found an issue with patient monitoring. Noone's talking publicly about what the problem is. According to ABC5, a hospital spokesperson says inspectors will be coming in to approve all the suggested changes that were ordered after a May visit.

Garage Theft

Des Moines police says someone used their car to ram a garage door at Brown's Auto Services last night, got into the building a stole a $400 set of tools. KCCI reports video surveillance shows the door being pushed in, then a man running in, and coming out about a minute later. The suspect's described as a 5'10" light-skinned African-American man in his 30's, with short hair and a light beard, weighing about 250.

Walmart Going After Netflix

Don't look now Netflix, but Walmart may be gaining on you. KCCI reports the world's largest retailer's now renting and streaming movies on line, some, the same day they're released on DVD. Walmart bought video-streaming service Vudu.com 18 months ago and is offering 20,000 titles, as of today, that can be viewed on almost any device with Internet access.

Woman Attacked With Bratwurst

Des Moines Police arrested a woman for assault, after she attacked 63-year old Connie Jones with a bratwurst last night. Police tell KCCI 31-year old Tajuana Banks threw the bratwurst at Jones when she refused to fight with her. Jones says she and Banks got into an argument over her granddaughter's childcare. When police arrested Banks, she yelled she'd do it again if she got a chance.

The lawyer who won David Flores a new trial in a 1996 murder Flores claims he did not commit, says she won't be able to represent him as he heads back into court this year. Mary Kennedy says representing Flores, in his new trial, will cost thousands that his family can't pay. Kennedy's she sent in court papers asking to withdraw as the 34-year-old's private defense attorney. Kennedy tells KCCI it's the hardest thing, but I'm at the end of my rope.

A group of National Federation of the Blind Iowa members stage a protest outside Sen. Tom Harkin's Des Moines office today. They want him to know they're not happy with a bill he's written, allowing employers to pay disabled workers less than the minimum wage. The group says that's unfair and everyone should be paid equally. Harkin wrote the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law 21-years ago, that bans discrimination in hiring based on disabilities.

Iowa Could Lose 100 Plus Post Offices

The U.S. Postal Service says it's looking at shutting down 178 post offices statewide. KCCI reports it's part of a plan to close 3700 retail outlets. The potential closures are part of a plan to cut 3,700 retail offices nationwide. USPS lost $8.5-billion last year. The streamlining would replace some offices with village offices in and run by retailer. They'd offer postal products and services like stamps and flat-rate packaging.

Des Moines is actively pursuing the promise of green jobs. The area is listed as number three on the Brookings Institution's list of Top 100 metro areas with the fastest green jobs growth. More than 25-hundred green jobs have been created in the city in the past 7 years.

Branstad at Education Summit

Gov. Branstad took the stage at the education summit today. He says states across the nation have moved ahead, raising academic standards while Iowa has remained stagnant. According to KCCI, the Governor says "The system in place does too little to support the incredibly valuable work that teachers do." He says Iowans have to accept that the state's no longer an education leader, and that it's time to roll up the sleeves and get to work.

U.S. Sec of Education in Iowa

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, says the frustrations of teachers in Iowa are the same as teachers all across the country. Duncan, speaking at the two day education summit at Hy-Vee Hall today, says he's trying to fix one of the major headaches created for teachers with No Child Left Behind. He says the law's "way too punitive, and way too prescriptive, and we can't have a law that's in the way of social change."

Iowa Big in Agriculture Exports

A new report from the Iowa Department of Economic Development says the state exported just over $7 billion in agriculture products last year. State Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey tells KCCI Iowa's still the #2 state for exports with corn soybeans, and meat leading the way. The USDA, says that as of 2009, $1 billion in U.S. agricultural exports required 8,400 American jobs.

Preschool Promo

Preschool learning programs got a political boost yesterday in Des Moines, as dozens of educators, early childhood advocates and politicians met at Carver Community School. The roundtable discussion on early learning included the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. Education officials pushed for extra outreach to the neediest families and extra money from the federal government.

Judge Not a Fan of Secrets in Malpractice Settlements

A judge has a problem with a clause in settlements of medical malpractice suits involving University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The Des Moines Register reports it requires plaintiffs never to discuss how much they were paid. Judge Eliza Ovrom first refused, but later approved a settlement where UIHC doctors were accused of botching a procedure that led to a Des Moines veteran's death, with the provision that its' details of the $475,000 deal were public record under state law.

Fire Officials Worried About Flexible Gas Tubing in Homes

At least 24 house fires in the Des Moines area since 2007 have been linked to a popular flexible gas tube that fire officials say is vulnerable to is vulnerable to lightning damage. Fire officials tell the Des Moines Register thousands of homes, especially those built in the last two decades, are at risk. The product's cheaper and easier to install, but wasn't required to be bonded and grounded during installation until last year.

Pollard Sues Altoona and Others over Rittman Investigation

28-year old Justin Pollard, an U.S. Army reservist acquitted last year for allegedly running over and killing Annamarie Rittman in a Lowe's parking lot in 2005, is suing the city of Altoona, the police chief, an officer, and others in federal court. The suit claims there was no probable cause for police to believe he committed the crime. The Des Moines Register reports there were no fibers, human tissue or DNA linking Pollard's truck to Rittman in the original investigation.

DM WDM Leaders Green Jobs Growth

A new report ranks the Des Moines metro as tops in the nation for green jobs growth. The Brookings Institution report says Des Moines and West Des Moines had an annual growth over 10% for green jobs in 2010. KCCI says that pushed the metro area into the No. 3 ranking on the Top 100 Metro Areas with the Fastest Green Jobs Growth for 2010. Des Moines ranked high in creating jobs in the public sector for conservation as well as waste management.

Education Summit on Monday

Governor Branstad is hosting an education summit on Monday, and it's a sure bet that his proposal tying teacher raises to classroom performances will be a hot topic. The proposal is part of the reform package being sent to the legislature in January.

Prison Time for Sex Crime Plea

A Norwalk man's going to do federal prison time after pleading guilty to attempted enticement of a minor to engage in illicit sexual conduct. 53-year old John Harryman will serve 135-months, then 10-years of supervised release, and register as a sex offender. Prosecutors say Harryman had online chats with what he thought was a 14-year old girl, it was an undercover Postal Inspector, and arranged to meet her in Johnston and officials tell KCCI, take her to a Des Moines motel for sex.

Branstad Wants Teacher Raises Tied to Classroom Performance

Gov. Branstad says he'll propose tying teacher pat raises to classroom performance as part of a reform package being sent to the next session of the legislature. KCCI reports leader of both parties say they're willing to consider the idea when the next session starts in January. Branstad hosts' an education summit Monday.

Teen Takes Plea for Shooting at Car

A Fort Dodge teen accused of shooting at a car, carrying a woman and her child, has been sentenced to 20-years in prison. 17-year old Deangelo Foy took a plea, to two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon. Police tell KCCI Foy used a gun to threaten people in a car on May 25 and, a few hours later, fired at the woman's car, hitting the windshield.

Grand Avenue Sewer Work

A section of Grand Avenue on Des Moines west side will be closed for sewer repairs from 6 p.m. tomorrow to Monday afternoon.
The Traffic and Transportation office says the closure, west of 38th Place will still be in place for rush hour Monday morning rush. Traffic will detoured to 35th Street, Ingersoll Avenue, and 42nd Street.

Educatrion Changes Needed in Iowa Schools

Iowa's Education Department's out with a new report, saying schools need to set high standards for learners and staff classrooms with effective teachers that can turn students into innovators to get back to the top in education. According to the Des Moines Register, the report says without major changes, Iowa will struggle to attract new businesses because it won't have the skilled workers to fill jobs.

First Pavement Explosion a MInor One

Several days high heat triggered a small “pavement explosion” in Des Moines this morning. The Des Moines Register says a northbound piece of E 30th Street near E University buckled. City Public Works Director Bill Stowe says water vapor trapped by concrete propbably expanded forcing the pavement to pop. Traffic disruption was minor.

New Homeless Shelter for Downtown Des Moines

Work's started on a new homeless shelter in downtown Des Moines. Over 100 people showed up for a groundbreaking ceremony at 1420 Mulberry St., just north of MLK Parkway. KCCI reports the new shelter will be able to provide emergency housing for 150 people and offer more space for showers, a kitchen, restrooms and an education room. $12-million of the $14-million needed to finish the project's already been raised.

Copper Thief Strikes For Sale Home

Des Moines police say someone broke into a home in the 1400 block of East 25th Street sometime in the last three weeks, and made it a lot harder to sell. They ripped all of the copper water pipe from the house. The theft wasn't discovered until last night, when a caretaker for the property noticed something wrong with the cellar door.

Marshalltown Call Center Hiring

Thomas L. Cardella and Associates is adding 50-jobs at their call center in Marshalltown. The Des Moines Business Record reports the company's accepting applications for 50-outbound sales jobs they plan to fill in the next few weeks. The first paid training Class starts July 25th. Wells Fargo Pays Record Civil Penalty

Wells Fargo's paying $85 million to settle a civil suit claiming they falsified loan documents and pushed borrowers toward subprime mortgages with higher interest rates. The Fed says this is the biggest fine every in a consumer-enforcement case. According to KCCI, the Fed alleges Wells Fargo inflated borrowers' incomes on loan documents to qualify for mortgages they otherwise couldn't afford from 2004 until 2008

Prison Food Suit

Iowa inmates are filing federal suits over the food in prison. Black Hawk County jail inmates say a profiteering private company has been skimping on the portions, and the sheriff's department is turning a blind eye.

Airport Water Service

The Mason City council has okayed a water service agreement they hope will open doors for development around the airport. The city of Clear Lake will provide water to the airport, instead of the airport continuing its reliance on wells.

DART Unveils New Service Plans

The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority's holding a series of public meetings this week on proposals for major changes in its routes and long term plans including light rail for the Des Moines Metro. KCCI reports the plan includes suburban circulators in West Des Moines and Ankeny, high-frequency service along University and Ingersoll avenues between downtown and 42nd Street, and more service between major retail centers.

Pavement Explosion Possibilities

The heat wave lasts long enough, we could be treated to something called “pavement explosions,” which the Des Moines Register reports can happen when when moisture can't escape through non-porous cement, causing it to explode. There've been no incidents yet, but Des Moines Public Works Director Bill Stowe says he's surprised we haven't seen any already. Stowe says it's a combination of high temperatures, steam pressure from trapped moisture and pavement weakness.

Angry Ex Boyfriend Locked Up

A Des Moines man's in the Polk COunty jail on various charges after he started kicking down doors at the SOuth Knolls Apartments looking for his ex-girlfriend. Des Moines Police say 21-year old Nathaniel Sigler wasn't happy after finding out she'd cheating on him with one his friends. According to KCCI, He claims that after 2 six packs and a half gallon of whiskey, he decided to kick down some doors looking for her. He didn't find her, but police found him.

Iowa Woman Accused of Abusing the Mentally Disabled

An Iowa woman who used to care for the mentally disabled has been charged with felony dependant adult abuse. Denison police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation started looking into say 40-year-old Wendy Mosier in December. She worked for WESCON industries from 2005 until January, and was responsible for buying items for WESCO clients by using their money. She' also charged with ongoing criminal conduct and felony forgery.

Ames accreditation

Ames Community School District administrators will outline tonight what they were told after an Iowa Department of Education site visit. The district gets to keep its accreditation after the visit, but there were still areas that needed improvement for compliance.

Saturday Garage Fire Stresses Firefighters

A garage fire in Urbandale had firefighters battling flames and the hot weather, Saturday. Firefighters were called at around 4:00 pm Saturday to a home on 68th Street. When they arrived, the home's attached garage was on fire, but they were able to put it out without major damage to the home. No one was injured and the cause is still under investigation. In this heat, firefighters rotate in and out of active firefighting more often, and take frequent breaks to ensure they aren't getting too hot.

Excessive Heat COntinues

Our heat wave shows no sign of relenting...and it may lock in through next weekend. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday, and forecasters say it could be extended another three days.
Afternoon high temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s Sunday through Wednesday, forecasters said. Overnight lows will only fall into the mid to upper 70s. Sweltering humidity throughout the period will produce heat index temperatures from 100 to 115 degrees each afternoon and around 80 at night. Cooling centers are open across the area.

Ex Sub Teacher Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Exploitation

Chad Ziesman entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment this morning. WHO-TV reports he's the ex-Urbandale substitute teacher and assistant track coach charged with sexual exploitation. The 33-year old's alleged to have sent emails and text messages of an inappropriate nature to a 14-year old girl. He has a trial date in September.

No Early Release for Tracy Dyess

Iowa's Board of Parole won't be recommending early release for Tracey Dyess. She was sentenced to 45-years for setting a fire in 2005 that killed her sister and nephew. Dyess told authorities at the time that she wanted to kill her stepfather because of sexual abuse. WHO-TV reports Dyess told a Parole Board hearing today she knows what she did was wrong, and will be paying for it the rest of her life.

NWS Issues Excessive Heat Watch

If today's heat has you uncomfortable, the rest of the weekend will be worse. The National Weather Service says it expects a high of 92 tomorrow, 94 Sunday, and 96 Monday. The heat index, or what the combination of heat and humidity feels like, tomorrow should be between 100 and 105; and Sunday and Monday 105-to-110. They've issued an excessive heat watch from tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday night.

Governor's Mansion Protest Tomorrow

There's a big protest expected tomorrow at the Governor's Mansion. Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement's behind it. They say Gov. Branstad's supported pro-business policies that hurt workers. Police will close a 10-block section of Grand Avenue, allowing protesters to march to the mansion, just west of downtown. Branstad won't see the protest, aides tell KCCI he'll be in Utah at a National Governors Association meeting.

Clive Couple Barred from Tax Preparation

An Iowa couple, Jill Schwartz-Musin and Howard Musin, have been barred from the tax preparation business. Federal Prosecutors say the Musin's claimed over $21-million in businesses expenses on clients tax returns between 2003 and 2006. The problem is , they weren't business expenses. The judge who barred the Musin's says they were taking personal expenses and trying to pass them off as business costs.

Iowa wrapped up the budget year June 30th, with $54.5-million in revenue collections above estimates. The state collected $329-million more than the previous fiscal year. The final numbers aren't done yet. The Des Moines Register reports the books on the 2010-2011 budget will be officially closed in late September.

Excessive Heat Watch Through the Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch, from Saturday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Daytime highs Saturday and Sunday are expected to hit the mid 90's, and upper 90's Monday and Tuesday. The heat Index, is expected to reach 100 to 112 each day. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Soldier's HOmecoming Marred by House Fire

Private First Class A-Jay Irelan is supposed to be back in Iowa this weekend after an entire year at war in Afghanistan. Days before his return, his home was destroyed by fire. Irelan’s house caught fire early Wednesday morning in the town of Dexter, about a half hour west of Des Moines. His girlfriend Erin Richey was at work and her son was out of the house. Several pets died in the fire. Irelan knows about the fire -- Richey was able to talk with him partway through his trip home and let him know. 28-hundred of the 29-hundred Iowa soldiers that left for Afghanistan a year ago are coming home today.

Specialty Pet Food Stolen form DSM Shelter

Thousands of dollars of prescription dog and cat food has been stoeln from a Des Moines animal shelter. Police said thieves broke off a padlock on a shed at the Animal Lifeline of Iowa and took everything inside. The shelter is working to replace the seven kinds of prescription foods that were stolen as soon as possible. They're out about $16-hundred for the food that was stoeln, and are looking for donations to replace it.

Polk County Administrator Finalists Interview Next Week

Polk County's Supervisors will interview the four finalists for the County Administrator's job next Thursday and Friday. They are Peter Austin, administrator in McHenry County, Ill.; Bonnie Hammersley, administrator in Muskegon County, Mich.; David Jones, administrator of Tazewell County, Ill.; and Steven Powers, administrator in Marquette County, Mich. Alliant Energy Making Progress

Thousands are still in the dark this afternoon from Mondays storms. Alliant Energy tells KCCI there are still 5900 customers in Marshall and Tama Counties sitting in the dark. This is a big improvement from the 16,000 plus customers initially knocked off line by those storms.

Guilty Plea Expected in Social Security Fraud Case

A sex offender plans to plead guilty in federal court Friday to charges he defrauded the government by collect social security benefits. KCCI reports Robert Wilberding was in prison at the time the benefits were paid to an unnamed co-conspirator, who'd agreed not to tell Social Security the truth. Prosecutors say the co-conspirator collected over $66-grand in benefits intended for Wilberding.

Michelle Kehoe Loses Appeal

Iowa's Court of Appeals has upheld the murder conviction of Michelle Kehoe, the Coralville woman who drove her two sons to a pond near Littleton and cut their throats, killing one of them. She claimed her defense lawyer was ineffective. The court didn't agree. Kehoe's serving a life term for killing her 2 year old son in 2008, and 25-years for attacking her then 7 year old son Sean.

Ex-School Prinicipal Pleads Not Guilty to Child Porn Charges

Former Sageville Elementary School Principal Robert Burke entered a not guilty plea to producing, distributing and possessing child pornography during a federal court arraignment today. Burke was busted at his home in Dubuque last month, after investigators say they traced his computer to child pornography. According to KCCI, Prosecutors say Burke admitted he hid a camera in a boys bathroom to take pictures of students.

High Trestle Bridge Light Thefts

22-year old Spencer Sisco's been charged with stealing LED lights from the High Trestle Trail Bridge. According to KCCI, Sisco's admitted stealing at least 4 of the lights. 15 were damaged or stolen. The Boone County Sheriff's Office and conservation officers are working to increase security on the new bridge. The bridge opened in April as part of the Ankeny to Woodward trial.

Branstad Questions Legislative Services Budget Numbers

Gov. Branstad's disputing showing state spending will rise this year this morning disputed numbers from the non-partisan Legislative Service Agency, showing the state’s general fund budget will grow from $5.4 billion in the last fiscal year to $5.98 billion in the current fiscal year; largely because hundreds of millions in expenses last year were shifted out of the general fund and paid instead by federal stimulus funds or the state’s cash reserves account.

Rocky Morning Weather

Storms rocked parts of Iowa this morning. The strongest ones hit north of Des Moines, and the National Weather Service says the most substantial damage was in Story, Marshall, Tama and Benton counties with wind gusts topping 70 mph. Power went off to 3100 customers of MidAmerican in Polk City, Polk County, Carlisle, Elkhardt and parts of the city of Des Moines. KCCI reports most of them had power back by early this afternoon.

Two Rengents Giving Up Leadership Posts

The president and president pro tem of Iowa Board of Regents are stepping down from their leadership roles. KCCI reports Gov. Branstad asked them to step aside for new leadership. Both men are expected to be replaced during a conference call meeting of the full board tomorrow. President David Miles and Jack Evans will remain as regents through the end of their terms April 30, 2012.

More State Layoffs Confirmed

State officials are confirming more layoffs. Two out-of-state auditors were let go yesterday along with two internal auditors at the state Revenue department. A spokesperson tells KCCI this was to cut redundancy; since internal audits are now handled by the State Auditor's Office, as well as the IRS. The E-File Department's help desk has also laid off, due to fewer requests for support from the public.

Officials looking for cause of two Des Moines Home Fires

Des Moines firefighters are trying to figure out what started fires on the outside of two homes on the city's southwest side. They happened early this morning. the first around 4:20am at 1100 Watrous Avenue, the second about an hour later at 4424 S.W. 26th Street. Damage from the Watrous Avenue blaze is about $30,000, the S.W. 26th Street fire at $1,000.

Ex High School Golf Coach Pleads Guilty to Drunk Driving

The former Fairfield Community high school golf coach charged with driving her team to a tournament while under the influence, has plead guilty to drunk driving and child endangerment. 59-year old Susie Steinbeck's blood alcohol level was .212 at the time. The Des Moines Register reports prosecutors dropped three other child endangerment charges and a failure to posses a valid driver's license charge in exchange for the guilty pleas.

Okland Murder at Three Months

It's been three months since realtor Ashley Okland was found shot to death in a Wes Des Moines townhouse. Police have interviewed over 370 people and chased down nearly 600 leads. KCCI reports police still aren't saying much. The four search warrants they obtained are still under seal, they won't say if Okland's murder was part of a robbery, if a weapons been recovered, or if anyone's been ruled out as a suspect. The reward for information's at $75,000.

Speedway Stars on Saturday

Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron will be at the Iowa Speedway tomorrow, taping scenes for a racing movie. Producers will shoot Efron walking across the pre-race stage, Quaid cheering from the stands, and stock car racing footage during the Prairie Meadows 200 scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.

Sew-In at State Fair

The Iowa State Fair's Fabric and Threads division is looking for your unwanted fabric. They're also looking for volunteers for the annual State Fair Sew-In. The free program gives fairgoers a chance to try a few simple stitches, while knowing those stitches are putting together a warm blanket for a local child in need.

Distemper warning

The city of Ames is warning dog owners to make sure their pets are vaccinated for distemper. There have been high numbers of sick raccoons that have been found to have the disease.

New Trial Date Set For David Flores

A judge today set August 22nd as the tentative date for the new trial of David Flores. He was convicted of killing Phyllis David during a running gun battle between rival gangs in Des Moines in 2009. An appeals court granted Flores a new trial based on new information including the fact Flores’ attorney never got a key police report before the trial.

Swanson Gets Life for Myers Murder

Michael Swanson was sentenced to life in prison by a judge today for last years robbery/murder of store clerk Sheila Myers. Prosecutors asked that the robbery count run consecutive to the life sentence, telling the court it's the least we can do with the defendant's complete lack of remorse. The judge agreed. Swanson was smiling when the judge described Myers murder. Swanson must also pay $150,000 in restitution to the Sheila Myers heirs.

Grassley Questions Justice Dept. Over Porn Viewing Attorney

Sen. Charles Grassley's asked Attorney General Eric Holder why the Justice Department declined to prosecute an Assistant U.S. Attorney the agency's inspector general says had porn on his work computer. The IG report, out in May, says the attorney admitted spending a substantial part of every day viewing porn. Disciplinary action's still pending against the unidentified attorney, and Grassley says he'd also like to know why the attorney's still on the government payroll.

Ames Canine Distemper Warning

Ames is warning dog owners to get their pets vaccinated against canine distemper. KCCI reports there've been quite a few a raccoons in the city found to have canine distemper. That's a risk to dogs that haven't been vaccinated. A spokesperson says the raccoons were initially infected by dogs with distemper and then spread it to other raccoons. Residents are being asked to throw away or pick up anything around their homes that could attract raccoons.

Iowa Revenue Dept. Cuts

The Iowa Department of Revenue's confirming that 22 positions at the agency were eliminated today. 21 of them permanent, one probationary. KCCI reports the cuts are part of a reorganization of state government after the approval of a new state budget that Gov. Branstad has yet to sign. There've been job cuts at other state agencies, but they haven't been confirmed yet

Disaster Recovery Plan Needed

The U-S Small Business Administration and the American Red Cross have teamed up to educate the public about the need for having a disaster recovery plan. The need seems particularly acute after extensive flooding in the Midwest. Studies show that 15-to-40 percent of businesses fail following disasters because they did not have recovery plans in place.

The FDA has come out with proposed supplement guidelines. They want to clear up confusion about safety rules for dietary supplements. Des Moines is home to several supplement manufacturers.

NFL football goes local

Former Southeast Polk and Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton and former Iowa State and New York Giants quarterback Sage Rosenfels will be in camp this weekend. It just won't be an NFL camp. The pair are hosting their annual youth football camp at Southeast Polk.

Portable degree

Iowa community college students will be able to get their associates degree, even if they transfer to one of the state's public universities. The Board of Regents says the new transfer application will let students enrolling from community colleges apply the credits toward a 2-year degree.

Portable classrooms for Ames

Ames Community School District will use portable buildings for music classes at Fellows and Meeker Elementary schools. The move will free up classroom space needed to fit in a larger than expected kindergarten class this fall.

Boy Rescued from WDM Pool Dies

A 5-year-old boy who had to be rescued from the Valley View Aquatics Center in West Des Monies Tuesday afternoon has died. Hospital officials say Kaden Daniels was swimming and for some reason ended up face-down in the water too long. Another swimmer bumped into him, and turned him over to find he was not breathing. Pool staff pulled him out of the water and started CPR. Police tell KCCI they learned yesterday Daniels had died. The cause of death has not been determined and remains under investigation.

Children's ID's Could Have Been Stolen

Iowa toddlers were on a list of people who might have had their ID stolen in a security breach. KCCI reports 200 Iowans were affected. An employee working in customer service for a company connected to College Savings Iowa inappropriately accessed Social Security numbers, names, birth dates, contact information and account numbers. Security experts say parents should start tracking their children's credit scores to make sure their identity wasn't stolen.

Burglars Just Dropping In

"Just dropping in," has new meaning for the owners of Des Moines South Port Sports Bar. KCCI reports someone broke in early yesterday through a roof vent, and took cash from game and cigarette machines. The Des Moines Register reports someone broke into the same bar the same way back in March. and Des Moines Police say someone sawed two holes in a wall to break into Big Dog Billiards early Monday, and stole cash from machines inside.

Labor No Fan of Higher Retirement Eligibility Age

Labor's not thrilled with Gov. Branstad's idea to raise the age public employees are eligible for full retirement benefits, as part of shoring up IPERS. Some labor leaders tell the Des Moines Register workers are paying more towards their retirement. IPERS retirees can retire with full benefits if they've worked for at least 20 years and are 62; or if they meet the rule of 88--their age plus years of experience equal 88.

Des Moines Traffic Camera Tickets

Des Moines police have released the first numbers from the new red light and speeding cameras turned on last month. 700 red light warning tickets were issued and 456 speed warning tickets were issued . The red light cameras have been in place in Clive and Cedar Rapids for years and are now being considered in Norwalk as well.

Fair Security Upped

New security measures will be in place at the Iowa State Fair this year, after fights near the fairgrounds last year. Part of the new measures include security cameras installed right on the fairgrounds. The cameras are intended to help with crowd control and keep officers alert to any medical emergencies.

Speedway upgrades

The Iowa Speedway is now owned by an Iowa family. Featherlite founder Conrad Clement, his brother Stan and sons Tracy and Eric bought the holding company that owns the speedway. The Clements are considering new amenities and facility improvements to draw in larger races and events.

gas prices inch up

The price of gas is up in Iowa. According to IowaStateGasPrices.com, gas on the 4th averaged 3-50 per gallon, up a penny-and-a-half from the previous week.

prisons understaffed

Iowa Correctional Workers are calling for an increase in state funding. The employees say they're significantly short staffed, while the prison population continues to grow. A local president says they don't feel safe at any of the prisons.

Damage from Tuesday Night Storms

A line of thunderstorms that pushed through the state overnight has caused some damage. KCCI reports the storms produced a 65 mph wind gust near Fort Dodge, nickel-sized hail in Dallas County, large tree limbs down in Webster County. Some crop damage has also been reported in Webster and Boone counties -- corn flattened by strong wind gusts. Near Badger in Webster County, a hog building was destroyed and tree limbs down after strong winds hit.

Iowa Speedweay Gets New Owners

The Iowa Speedway's got a new owner. Conrad Clement, founder of Featherlite, his 2 sons and brother Stan have bought U.S. Motorsports Corporation June 30th. The Clement's bought the speedway from the Manatt family, which have been the primary investors since the track was built. According to KCCI, Clement says he and his staff will keep looking at new amenities and facility improvements to accommodate larger races and additional events at Iowa Speedway.

Terrible's Lakeside Expanding

The Des Moines Business Record reports Terrible's Lakeside Casino in Osceola's breaking ground on a new hotel addition Thursday. It'll include 90-rooms and an indoor pool. Once that projects finished, Lakeside will start the renovation of the original 60-rooms.

Swanson Pleads Guilty to One Murder

The Minnesota teen convicted in June for killing a convenience store clerk won't stand trial for the killing of another clerk. Prosecutors say 18-year old Michael Swanson's informed them of his intent to plead guilty to murder and robbery charges in last November's killing of Vicky Bowman-Hall in Algona. He's also expected to ask for immediate sentencing on the plea Thursday afternoon. That morning he'll be sentenced for murder and robbery in the death of Sheila Myers. He faces mandatory life in that case.

Where's Wiggins?

A material witness warrant's been issued for 25-year old Marcell Wiggins of Des Moines. Police say he's a witness to the March murder of Cyrus Hicks, who was shot to death in an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Boston Avenue. If you know where Wiggins is, call police at 283-4869 or Polk County Crime Stoppers at 223-1400.

US 30 Flood Wall Installation Delayed

The Iowa Department of Transportation says it will delay the installation of a flood wall along parts of U.S. Highway 30. The work closure had been scheduled to begin this morning west of Missouri Valley. The department says flood water is still filling the basin that extends north and south of the highway, but appears to be leveling. Water has stabilized south of the highway, and is only rising slightly to the north. The delay means US 30 is still open for the time being.

Flood wall delay

A flood wall scheduled to be installed along parts of U-S Highway 30 in Ames is going to be delayed. It was supposed to start this morning, but the Iowa Department of Transportation says flooding is still filling the basin that extends north and south of the highway. It seems to be leveling.

Teen Versus Train

A teen who says he'd been drinking at the 80-35 Music Festival was run over by a train Sunday night...and survived. Two Iowa Interstate Railroad engineers spotted Christian Latshaw just as they were traveling over the river bridge, and slammed on the emergency brake. Latshaw had a few cuts, a few bruises, and probably a few criminal trespassing charges, if the railroad has its way.

Kids Health enrollment

Iowans have just over a month to enroll their kids in certain health insurance policies and avoid being discriminated against for pre-existing conditions. Insurance companies can, however, charge a higher premium, based on health status, under the new rules.

Horse tail pulling a no-no

Pull a horse's tail, and wind up in jail...that's a lesson learned by a Des Moines woman who thought she'd give one a yank outside a bar early Sunday morning. Problem was, it was a police horse, and his rider was doing some crowd clearing. Which is why Tonya Scott was charged with interference of official acts.

Wednesday's Ankeny All City Play Day

Ankeny's annual All-City Play Day's Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wagner and Hawkeye parks. Don't Touch The Police Horse

Tonya Scott spent part of her Sunday in the Polk County Jail. The 41-year old was in Des Moines bar district early that morning when mounted police came through to clear a crowd in front of 101 Lounge. Police say Scott grabbed the tail of one of the horses and gave it a yank. She was charged with interfering with official acts.

Iowa Soldier Dies Protecting Freedom

As we celebrate our country's independence, the cost of freedom hits home for one Iowa family. Jefferson, Iowa native Matthew Nielson, a US Army captain, was confirmed yesterday to have died last week in Badrah, Iraq. Nielson was killed during an indirect fire attack by insurgents on the base where he was stationed. Two other soldiers were also killed int eh attack, according to a Department of Defense release yesterday. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Iowa soldier killed

Iowa has lost its sixth soldier this year to the war in Iraq. Captain Matthew Nielsen of Jefferson was struck down during the past week. While serving in the military he earned nearly 10 military awards and decorations - including a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Special vets exhibit

A special art exhibit for veterans is camping at the Johnson County Historical Society Museum. It's part of a national project that uses art workshops to help vets reconcile and share personal experiences.

Beaches contaminated

A bit of a damper for those who want to swim during the holiday weekend...beaches at six state parks have been tainted with high fecal bacteria levels. Safety warnings are posted at Emerson Bay, Geode near Danville, Beed's near Hampton, Backbone near Strawberry Point, Lacey Keosuqua, and Springboard near Guthrie Center.

Holiday Traffic Crackdown

The annual Fourth of July traffic crackdown's under way in Iowa, and runs through the holiday weekend. According to the Des Moines Register, local, county and state agencies will be looking for impaired drivers, and enforcing seat belt and speeding laws as well as other traffic laws.

Corj Futures Down on USDA Data

Corn futures fell 38 cents/bushel to $6.60 for the July contract and 17 cents/bushel to $6.33 for the December contract on the heels of a USDA report saying acreage planted this year was up by 5% to 92-million acres. According to the Des Moines Register the USDA data will pull the rug out from under corn prices which have been swinging wildly all year. Corn hit a 2011 high of $7.99 per bushel in early June.

Windpower Project Gets Boost

At it's final meeting, Iowa's Power Fund Board's approved $2.3 million for a project that'll develop a low wind speed turbine.
Clipper Windpower's developing the project and KCCI reports they're kicking in $18-million to get things moving. The prototype wind turbine will be used to do testing of the new design later this year, with prototype installation scheduled in 2012.
Clipper says they expect the project to create jobs at its plant in Cedar Rapids.

Guilty Plea Over Teens Dancing in Strip CLub

The co-owner of a Cedar Rapids strip club's been sentenced for having underage dancers working in his club last year. 33-year old Justin Brown plead guilty today to exhibiting persons, a misdemeanor, and was given a deferred judgment. Brown, co-owner of Woody's Show Club, will serve a one year self-supervised probation. Court records show at least two teens, ages 16 and 17 years old, performed at the club in 2010.

Teen Drowns in Clear Lake

Clear Lake police say a 16-year old drowned last night while swimming. Jerrard Ramon of Clear lake, was found a few hundred yards from the sea wall around 8:30 last night. according to KCCI police got a call around 4:30 of someone going under south of the downtown boat ram,p A couple of men tried to reach Ramon, but he went under before they could get to him. Investigators say the teen was in jeans, and that may have been a factor.

It's Hot!

The scorching summer heat has sent central Iowans searching for ways to keep cool as heat indices climbed well above 100 degrees. While pools and inside attractions were busy, those with no choice but to work outside had a rough day. Dr. Sydney Leach of Mercy Medical Center tells KCCI they have seen an uptick in heat-related illnesses. Heat advisories are in effect until this evening.
