Police Looking into Crash that Kills Teen in Jasper Cty

Police are looking into a car crash that killed 17-year old Sydney Schwienebart in Jasper County yesterday. Deputies say she was eastbound on Highway F-48 and missed a curve. Her SUV hit a bridge rail, flipped a few times and ended upside down in a creek. Schwienebart was the only person inside.

Wheeler Jury Starts Deliberations

12-Polk County jurors started deliberations this afternoon in the case of Tom Wheeler, the former director of Iowa's film office. He's charged with fraud, conspiracy and felonious misconduct in office. The Des Moines Register reports prosecutors say Wheeler knowingly served as the “inside man” for six filmmakers who inflated costs and lied on budget documents to scam more money from a generous Iowa tax credit program.

Hoover HS Principal Attacked

A Des Moines high school says he wasn't hurt when attacked by a man trying to enter Hoover High School today. According to KCCI, Doug Wheeler says 18-year old Jose Sanchez, Jr., who's not a student, was stopped by security trying to enter the building, and Wheeler says he went off when asked to leaver. Sanchez is in the Polk County Jail on charges including criminal trespass and assault.

Hoover HS Principal Attacked

A Des Moines high school says he wasn't hurt when attacked by a man trying to enter Hoover High School today. According to KCCI, Doug Wheeler says 18-year old Jose Sanchez, Jr., who's not a student, was stopped by security trying to enter the building, and Wheeler says he went off when asked to leaver. Sanchez is in the Polk COunty Jail on charges including criminal trespass and assault.

Some U of I Football Players Quit Team

U of I says three of the 13-football players hospitalized after heavy weight training workouts in January have quit the team. The report doesn't identify any of the players, but one quit to focus on academics, another-who was on scholarship, finished spring practice but left the university for personal reasons; and KCCI says the third quit before spring practice. All 13 players have reportedly made full recoveries and aren't expected to suffer long-term problems.

Keokuk Sheriff Trial on DUI

Keokuk County Sheriff Jeff Shipley goes to trial in October for drunk driving. He was busted by an Iowa State Trooper July 27th in Sigourney. He was off duty and in a private car at the time. Shipley plead guilty to drunk boating in 2008. In April, he and two of his deputies were involved in a deadly shootout with a man at a farmhouse near Sigourney. A deputy and the suspect were killed.

Drug Charge Filed Against Man Charged with Running Over DM Police Officer

The North Carolina man who allegedly hit and critically injured a Des Moines police officer outside the Iowa State Fairgrounds, is facing new charges after police found what was left of two marijuana cigarettes in his truck. The Des Moines Register reports 37-year old Keith Terry's now charged with possession of marijuana, on top of serious injury by motor vehicle and OWI. Des Moines Police Officer Phoukham Tran, remains at the University of Iowa Hospitals in critical condition.

DM City Council Backs DMACC Southridge Plan

Des Moines City Council's unanimously endorsed a plan to bring close to 2,000 Des Moines Area Community College students a week to a new facility at Southridge Mall on the city's southeast side. The new Southridge facility also would house the college’s Success Center, which offers high school equivalency degrees and English language learning programs.

A DMACC student's been charged with harassment over a tweet he sent last Thursday. Police arrested 18-year old Paul George when he showed up for class. What was in the tweet? KCCI reports it said "Who wants to shoot up the dmacc ankeny campus the same time I shoot up the urban campus?" George is a student at the DMACC Urban Campus at 1100 Seventh St. in Des Moines.

DPD Report Says PCSD Deputy Involved in Road Rage Incident

No charges have been filed, but Des Moines police are investigating a road rage incident involving three men and an off-duty Polk County sheriff's deputy. The police report says Deputy Shawn Vanhoozer was driving on I-235 with his wife and infant daughter when a pickup truck cut him off. The report goes on to say that Vanhoozer pulled off the interstate and two men jumped from the truck and began to fight with him. The driver of that vehicle claims in the police report that Vanhoozer started the fight. Police said the deputy suffered minor facial injuries during the confrontation as did Lewis Losa, one of the passengers in the pickup truck.

Des Moines Saturday Parking Rates

Des Moines officials are considering raising the rates for parking in downtown garages on Saturday nights, bringing in close to $185,000 in new revenue. It would cost $3/vehicle after 4 p.m. at three city garages - Third and Court, Fifth and Walnut and 4th and Grand. Farmers Market parking wouldn't be affected. The Des Moines Register reports on-street parking meters and other city parking garages would stay free on Saturdays.

Iowa and Google Partner on Small Business Websites

Gov. Branstad says the state will be partnering with Google to help Iowa businesses create an online presence. Branstad says about 59% of Iowa's small businesses don't have websites. Google will offer a free and easy-to-build professional website, a free customized domain name and hosting for a year, a local business listing on Google Places, free tools, resources and training. After that, the businesses will have to pay hosting and domain fees themselves.

Police After Suspect in Gas Station Attack

West Des Moines Police are trying to identify a man who hit a gas station clerk with his car after trying to pass two phony $100 bills. It happened August 15th at the Conoco at 136 First Street. KCCI reports the suspects a 35-year old black male, 5'8", 235, bald, and goes by the name Dee. The car's a mid 90's maroon sedan. Construction Started for DM Whole Foods

Construction continued today on the first Whole Foods store in the Des Moines metro area. The store will be opening at 4100 University drive next to Best Buy. KCCI reports changes have made to the parking lot, and crews have started work on a new facade for the Best Buy location, which is being taken over by Whole Foods. The new Whole Foods is expected to create 125 jobs when it opens in the spring.

Des Moines PD Puts Speed Cam Locations on Facebook

Okay, this isn't normal: Cops are telling you where they're going to be on the hunt for speeders. Des Moines Police say they'll have speed cameras in the 4700 blk. Urbandale Avenue, eastbound today, then tomorrow, 2100 Blk. E. 29th St, southbound, on Wednesday in the 1100 Blk. 2nd Ave southbound, and there are more, so check out the Des Moines Police Department's facebook page, and watch your speed.

Wheeler Trial Continues

Witnesses for the defense in the trial of former Iowa Film Department Director Tom Wheeler said he wasn't qualified to do the job. They said he was honest, but overwhelmed with the job, that he didn't have the experience to do the job. Wheeler faces numerous charges that could land him in prison for a long time.

Tractor Accident Kills Scott Co Man

Scott County deputies are investigating a farm accident that killed a man there. They said 77 year old Donavon Sievers was driving his tractor when it rolled into a ditch, and he was killed. Deputies said the accident happened yesterday afternoon.

Posturing?

A lawsuit says Governor Terry Branstad violated the Iowa Constitution when he vetoed parts of a bill that would have kept 36 unemployment offices open. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday by union leader Danny Homan and four Democratic leaders. Branstad's people call the lawsuit political posturing.

IRS Fines School District for Late Taxes

Nobody's immure to taxes, even schools. The Iowa City School District was late paying its taxes by one day and got fined more than 25 thousand dollars. The IRS busted the district in July. District officials said the missed payment was in March. It was for the March 11 payroll, found on March 14, and sent to the IRS on March 15. The district is appealing the fine.

Higher Gas Prices?

Could we see higher gas prices? Because of the Hawkeye state's deteriorating roads, we could be looking at a ten cent a gallon tax, thus raising the price at the pump. There was a public forum in Des Moines yesterday where most of those who spoke said the state needs more money to fix its 114 thousand miles of roads.

Man Busted for Liquor Store Robbery

Des Moines police have their man in a July robbery. Police said they arrested 38 year old Billie Joe Byrd on several charges for allegedly stealing from Central City Liquor on Second Avenue and he's in the Polk County Jail on 27 thousand dollars bond. Police said on July 9, two men went into the store and were confronted by employees. They fled with a bottle of rum worth 18 dollars. Surveillance video helped nab Byrd, but the other suspect has not been found.

Andrews Death Not Hate Crime: Police

That a 19 year old man was killed in Waterloo, is not being considered a hate crime, and still not arrests have been made. Police said that while witnesses claimed that those who attacked Marcellus Andrews last week said there were anti-gay comments made, Andrews and his attackers had an ongoing beef with each other. Police said the differences between them escalated last week to that beating. Andrews died of blunt force trauma after he was taken off life support.

Iowa State Fair Attendance--Record?

They didn't set an attendance record for the just ended Iowa State Fair. The preliminary number for this year is just over a million 80-thousand. KCCI reports that's up from 967,000 last year. The all time record was 1.1-million set in 2008.

Branstad Thinks Bureaucrats Went Too Far With Lead Shot Ban for Dove Hunting

Gov. Branstad says the Natural Resources Commission overstepped their authority when they tried to ban lead shot from being used by dove hunters. He called it another example of state bureaucrats abusing their power. KCCI reports environmentalists say lead shot can be deadly to other animals who eat the pellets. The governor says that's a decision that should be left to the legislature, which has delayed the commission action.

Iowa Man Pleads Not Guilty to Wife's Murder

Thomas Petersen's entered a not guilty plea today to first degree murder for the June killing of his wife Judy. POlice say Petersen stabbed his wife to death in their home, then took off with their 2 year old son. He was arrested near Kadoka, South Dakota. According to KCCI, he was returned to Iowa August 11th, and has been held in the Butler County jail on $500,000 bond.

Teen Girls Busted for Fighting

Four teenage girls were arrested after the Iowa State Fair ended its' run last night. Police were called about a fight in the 2800 block of Des Moines Street just after midnight, and spotted the girls in the 2700 block of Lyon. As officers began to take them into custody, one of them's alleged to have taken a swing at an Iowa State trooper, and had to be wrestled to the ground. She ended up in a hospital after hyperventilating. Two of the girls are 14, two are 15.

Still No ID on Grinnell Fire Victim

Authorities in Grinnell says they'll have to wait for the results of additional tests before they can identify a body found after a house fire last Friday at 1629 Third Street. Police tell KCCI there are no signs of foul play, and are now waiting for toxicology reports. They do know the fire wasn't suspicious, and only one person was living in the home at the time of the fire.

WDM P.D. Looking for Armed Robbery Suspect

West Des Moines police need your help in identifying the suspect in a Friday night armed robbery at The Vine Quick Shop at 2701 Vine. According to KCCI, police say a white male about 18, walked in, pulled a handgun and demanded cash. He got away on foot. The suspect's believed to be about 5'6", with short blond hair and blue eyes. Officer Recovering After Surgery, Being Hit By Truck at State Fair

A Des Moines police officer is recovering from surgery after he was injured on Friday when a pick up truck hit him. Officer Phoukham Tran is at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Police said Officer Tran was keeping the Iowa State Fair Safe when the truck hit him just outside the fairgrounds. KCCI TV reports that Keith Terry, who was driving the truck that hit the officer, celebrated his birthday in the Polk County Jail, as he had a blood alcohol content of .264, more than three times the legal limit, and is in jail on a 50 thousand dollar bond.

SCRUB Day in Des Moines

Tomorrow's a City of Des Moines SCRUB Day. It runs from 7a.m. to noon at the Polk County River Place. The event is only open to Des Moines residents. anyone attending should bring a driver’s license or utility bill with a Des Moines address on it. You can get rid of your Trash, furniture, wood, TVs, computers, tires, lawn mowers without fluids. They won't accept Paint, oil, chemicals, car batteries, propane tanks.

Body Found After Grinnell House Fire

Police said one person died in an overnight fire in Grinnell. Police and fire fighters say a home at 1629 3rd Avenue was fully involved when they arrived just after 6 this morning. It took an hour to bring it under control, and the body was found during a search of the debris. KCCI reports authorities are working to identify the remains.

Iowa Drops Out of Midwest Passenger Rail Coalition

Some local elected officials are not happy with Gov. Branstaad's refusal to renew Iowa's membership in a federal passenger rail advocacy group for next year, even after Iowa City, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County, Quad Cities Chamber and Greater Des Moines Partnership agreed to pay the $15,000 membership fee. the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Coalition provides planning and federal lobbying for passenger rail in Midwest states including Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota.

Missing Warren County Man Was Killed in His Home

Authorities have found James Wood. It was his body firefighters found after a suspicious fire destroyed the family home July 31st. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says the 79 year old was shot to death. Wood and his wife, “Kay” were last seen the day before their home burned. Their pick up was found in Kansas City, MO. Kay Wood's still missing. Police have released a sketch of a person of interest in the investigation.

Student Overflow in Iowa Dorms

Most of Iowa’s major universities are reporting record enrollments this fall. As students move in to the dorms, this week, they’re finding cramped living quarters. And hundreds of students at the U of I and ISU are going to be spending the fall semester in converted residence hall lounges.

Prison Personnel Information Left Out for Inmates

Warden Jim McKinney says paperwork containing the names and Social Security numbers of 23 guards and prison employees at Fort Dodge turned up in an old desk that was sitting in an inmate barbershop. A jail officer found the papers a few weeks ago, and McKinney says they were probably accessible to inmates for three or four months, before they were discovered. McKinney says he’s confident no inmate saw the papers, but there’s no way to be sure.

ICE gets Cool Reception from Plan and Zoning

The Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission decided not to recommend a proposal that would allow the Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing and detainment offices to re-locate. ICE says it’s outgrown its current facility. The request will still go before the City Council, but six of seven council members would need to approve it, and city staff has recommended against the zoning amendments.

Flags at Half Staff Today

Governor Terry Branstad ordered U-S and Iowa flags to be flown at half staff today, in honor of Petty Officer Jon Tumilson. The U-S Navy Seal team member was killed when the helicopter he was riding in was shot down in Afghanistan. He was 35. Services are today in Rockford.

Mobile Radar Egged

Des Moines police had a little cleaning to do, before they moved their mobile speed trap, this week. Officers report that the radar unit had a broken egg on its windshield on Wednesday night. Someone was either taking target practice or trying to obscure the view of the camera. It’s been set up in the 1600 block of Beaver Avenue. Today, the cleaned unit is in the 1400 block of the Martin Luther King Junior Parkway bypass, watching eastbound traffic.

Testimony will continue today for the Tom Wheeler trial. The former director of the Iowa Film Office is charged with several counts of fraud, conspiracy and misconduct in office, helping film companies get millions of dollars in taxpayer money by inflating proposed budgets.

Ankeny Holding School Board Forum Sunday

The Ankeny School Board Candidates will be available to answer some questions from the public during a forum on Sunday night. The Ankeny Parents’ Association and PTO is hosting the event from 6:30 to 8:30 Sunday in the auditorium of the new Ankeny High School.

DART May Save the #11 Route in Some Form

The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority is going to re-evaluate plans to discontinue the number 11. The bus takes riders to downtown Des Moines and the library and Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. It was slated to be discontinued in an earlier proposal, but West Des Moines City Manager Greg Sparks says enough people protested that the City Council will discuss the future of the route on Monday night, when members have a work session, after their regular meeting.

Train Derails

A Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Des Moines last night and investigators say, amazingly, it did not tip over, but stayed upright. The derailment was in the 21 hundred block of East Market around 8 p.m. The conductor told investigators that he felt a car rocking and so stopped the train. The wheels went off the track, but the train did not tip and firefighters said no one was hurt.

Three Beachs Have High Bacteria Levels

Three Iowa beaches are posting high bacteria levels after tests were run. Samples from Don Williams lake at Ogden, King’s Pointe resort at Storm Lake and Hickory Grove Lake near Colo had higher levels of fecal material than allowed. Officials said that the higher than normal readings probably meant people would get sick if they swam in the lakes. Health officials say you shouldn't swallow the water if you're going swimming in any of the lakes, and be sure to shower after swimming..

Updated Info to be Released on Woods

We should have some more information today about Bill and Kay Wood. The couple went missing on July 30 when their rural Warren County home burned. Police found a man's body in the house after the fire was put out, but have not said who it is. Investigators are looking for a man who was seen walking from the couple's truck which was found parked at a Kansas city apartment complex the day after the fire and their disappearance.

Camera Vandalized

Somebody hit the Des Moines Police Departments' mobile speed camera unit with eggs on Tuesday. That's what police said. Police said officers found the vandalism in the 1600 block of Beaver Avenue. Investigators said that the act may have disrupted the camera's operation, but they're checking video to see what clues they might find. Police have filed a criminal mischief report in the case.

Man, Woman Busted Pawning Pawn Shop Stuff

Police arrested a man from Waterloo for what they said was his involvement in a scheme. Police said they arrested 56-year-old Thomas Biemann on Wednesday, charging him with theft and using a minor to commit a theft. Biemann also involved his wife Rhonda who was arrested on Sunday for theft. Police said the couple made their son steal from a pawn shop, then tried to sell the items back to the same pawn shop. When he was told the stuff was stolen. Biemann grabbed it and ran. Police got the stuff back when they arrested him.

Teens Allegedly Throw Rock, Hit Jeep

Three teens allegedly threw a rock -- or something -- at a Jeep that Jeff Badger was driving. He told KCCI TV that he was just out for a drive when his Jeep was damaged. He said had he been going just seconds faster, the rock might have hit him. When he looked up the hill, three teens only acknowledged him, then, as Badger said, "sauntered away". If they did it, they put a serious dent in Badger's Jeep, but they could have done much worse, including killing Badger. He filed a report with police, he said, to make sure no one else gets hurt.

The trial of the man who used to run the Iowa Film Office is still going on. Tom Wheeler faces numerous counts of fraud, conspiracy and misconduct in office. Several people from the movie industry have and are expected to testify in the case, but not likely any names we know.

Baby Found Unresponsive after Nap Dies

The autopsy results are not in yet, but a Pottawatomie County baby was found dead at a Council Bluffs daycare center this week. Sheriff's investigators said the baby, named Lane Thomas, was found unresponsive after a daycare worker put the child down for a nap and was unresponsive about 90 minutes later.



Swimmers Warned

Several popular swimming beaches in Iowa have posted warnings for swimming. The State Department of Natural Resources says water samples at King’s Pointe resort at Storm Lake, Hickory Grove Lake near Colo and Don Williams lake at Ogden exceeded limits for fecal bacteria this week. The Des Moines Register reports health officials suggest that swimmers avoid swallowing the water and bathe after swimming to avoid getting sick.

Limits on Booze and Tobacco Sales in Des Moines?

A lot of Des Moines gas stations and convenience stores have closed, and they've become magnets for illegal dumping and graffiti. The Des Moines Register reports new operations at those sites are focused on liquor or tobacco sales, and residents' aren't thrilled. Tonight the Planning and Zoning Commission's debating new regulations that could limit how many of those kinds of outlets could open in a given community.

Des Moines Speed Cam Egged

Someone's not a fan of Des Moines mobile speed camera unit. According to KCCI police say someone pelted the car with eggs earlier this week. Officers noticed the vandalism when they picked it up Tuesday night from the 1600 block of Beaver Avenue. Police are reviewing video from the car to see if they can identify a suspect.

Banker Survey Suggests Rural Economy Slowdown

A new survey of bankers suggests worries about U.S. financial health have led to a slowdown in the economy in rural areas of the 10-Midwest and plains states. According to KCCI, the Rural Mainstreet index fell below 50, to 49.3 this month. Bankers surveyed are in rural areas of Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Hyrdo Electric Plant at Red Rock

Missouri Energy Services in Sioux Falls is going forward with plans to build a $220-million hydroelectric generating plant at Red Rock Reservoir. KCCI reports the company will build and operate the plant and it will be owned by the Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. Plans call for construction to start in 2013, with the plant on line in 2016.

West Des Moines Closer to New Housing Development

The West Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission has approved a housing project that includes 34 single family homes. Developers would build the South Maple Grove Villas with one or two builders on nearly nine acres of land. The proposal from Mid America Group next needs full City Council approval on Monday.

Des Moines Debates Gas Stations that Don't Sell Fuel

City leaders are considering new regulations that would keep businesses that have a majority of sales coming from liquor from opening in neighborhoods. Residents have registered their concerns that closed convenience stores and gas stations through out Des Moines are being turned into liquor stores and tobacco shops, attracting vandalism and graffiti. Members of the city’s Plan and Zoning Commission will debate ordinance proposals, starting at six o’clock in City Hall.

Deere Stock Down Despite Record Quarter

Deere and Company reported its fifth record quarter in a row, but the year over year gain slowed, and stock fell 90 cents to 74.26, yesterday. Still, Deere earnings increased 15 percent, last quarter, compared to 2010.

Norwalk Says No to Family Fun Center

Norwalk City Council members say they can not support a private recreation facility, as proposed. A resident asked for financial assistance and economic development incentives to build the Norwalk Family Fun Center, which would include a 42-thousand square foot facility with indoor and outdoor family activities.

Library Set to Re-Open with Fantastic Features

The Franklin Avenue Library is getting ready for a grand opening, next week, after an 8.4 million dollar expansion and refurbishing project. It’s more than double the size, with a larger childen’s section, story time room, teen space and study rooms. The restrooms were upgraded, and there is now a drive through book return, free Wi-Fi and electric car charging stations. Important features patrons don’t see include more energy efficient heating and cooling and light fixtures.

Mysterious Prowler in Ingersoll Neighborhood

Des Moines Police are stumped. Officers have been called three times to the 4800 block of Ingersoll Avenue, with residents hearing noises or seeing someone lurking in the neighborhood, this week. On Tuesday, a woman who had called police found that part of her window frame was pried off. But, police haven’t found any suspects yet.

ICE Tries Again for New Digs

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office has been trying to get settled in a larger space to process and detain people suspected of being illegal immigrants. But, each time representatives come to a meeting of the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission with a proposal, there are protests from activists and neighbors. Tonight, they try again, for a building in the southwestern part of the facility. U-S Federal Properties is going to ask for zoning amendments to allow ICE to locate in an existing commercial building on Thornton Avenue, in Airport Commerce Park West.

Bridgestone, Proliant and other Companies Make a Pitch to the State

Bridgestone and other companies are considering expansions that could bring up to 86 million dollars in development money to the area and most likely, more jobs. Representatives will be making their pitch to the Iowa Economic Development Board, today, to try to get some state incentives.

Crack Closes Bridge

There's a crack in a floor beam of the bridge deck over the Mississippi River between Lansing, Iowa and De Soto Wisconsin. That's why Iowa transportation officials have closed the bridge. Officials said the bridge that's on Highway nine was closed suddenly yesterday when an inspection crew discovered the crack. How long will it be closed? Department officials say they don't know, but traffic is being rerouted to other bridges over the Mississippi, north and south of Lansing.

Boy Dies After Being Hit By Boat

A nine year old boy, who was a member of the Waterhawks Ski Team died in a water skiing accident yesterday. Police said it happened on Eagle Lake in Evansdale, just after noon. Police said that three people fell into the water and the boy was hit by a boat as the three waited for their boat to pick them up. The boat's driver said he thought the three swam to shore, and so didn't see them in the water. Police said the boy was hurt in the incident and died at a Waterloo hospital.

Five Busted in Teen Crime Spree

Five teens have had their crime spree interrupted with arrests. Knoxville police said that the 16 and 17 year olds were stealing cars and stealing from homes. It started on July first, and the five apparently stole about six thousand dollars worth of items. Police recovered the stolen stuff as they investigated the case. It was an observant citizen in Knoxville who called police in the overnight hours of August seventh and eighth, after seeing teens wearing masks messing around some cars. All five are boys and one of the 17 year olds faces nearly a dozen counts. Their cases are all in juvenile court.

ICE Wants a Place in Des Moines

ICE could be coming to Des Moines. Its not the kind you skate on either. Its Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Des Moines Business Record is reporting that the city's planning and zoning commission will hear two requests for processing centers. One would put a center at the Airport Commerce Park West. Family Wants to Know

Bill and Kay Wood's family has no idea what happened to the Warren County couple, but the Division of Criminal Investigation agents say they hope to have DNA results by next week to identify a body found inside the couple's house. They have been missing since a fire destroyed their home on July 30. The family wants to know if the body is Bill's and said knowing that would be a starting point.

Secret Service Member Busted

KGAN TV is reporting that a member of the US Secret Service was arrested in Decorah and charged with OWI. Thirty-nine year old Daniel Valencia was apparently getting ready for the President's visit the other day, but was arrested last Saturday. The TV station reported that Valencia was part of the advance team for Barack Obama's campaign stop. Valencia was released from jail on Monday, just before Obama arrived.

Wells Fargo Experiment

Wells Fargo's having a little experiment this fall, and you could be the test subject. They're going to start charging a monthly fee of $3 for debit cards attached to checking accounts opened in certain states. The bank already charges a monthly service fee for checking accounts. Banks are toying with new fees and cutting rewards programs ahead of new regulation that could cut their revenue.

Alleged Bank Robber Faces Fed Charges

Polk County prosecutors have dropped all charges against Robin Brooks, an alleged bank robber and carjacker. He's been indicted on the same charges by a federal grand jury. Brooks will now have his trial in federal court starting October 3rd. According to the Des Moines Register, the 27-year old's alleged to have robbed a credit union, then pulled a woman from her van, and used it to strike a police car. He was wounded by officers.

ICE Trying Again for a Des Moines Site

The Des Moines Business Record's reporting the city Planning and ZOning Commissions' expected to hear 2-requests tomorrow concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One is for space at Airport Commerce Park West, the other a building at 315 S.W. 14th Street. Eachg proposal calls for opening a processing and temporary detention facility for the agency.

Secret Service Agent Charged w/Owi

A member of President Obama's Secret Service advance detail was arrested earlier this week for OWI in Decorah. According to KCCI 39-year old Daniel Valencia was arrested Saturday and released from jail Monday. A Service Spokesperson says the issue's been turned over to their Office of Professional Responsibility.

Tips to Prevent Children Falling through Windows

A three year old boy fell from a second story window on the east side of Des Moines, yesterday. He does not appear to be seriously injured. But, local officials are concerned, because this makes at least four young children who have fallen from windows in the city, this year. Community Outreach educators say window stops or guards are crucial, when children are around, to keep the windows from opening wide enough for them to push through the screen. Anything parents use should be easy to remove in case of an emergency. Also recommended, placing a line of tape on the floor in front of the window and instruct children not to play beyond the line.

Ingersoll Avenue Residents Spooked by Bumps in Night

Des Moines Police are stumped. Officers have been called three times to the 4800 block of Ingersoll Avenue, with residents hearing noises or seeing someone lurking in the neighborhood, this week. On Tuesday, a woman who had called police found that part of her window frame was pried off. But, police haven’t found any suspects yet.

State Students Score Higher than Most on ACT

Iowa is among the highest ranking states, when it comes to college entrance exam scores. Of all states where more than half of the graduating high school students took the ACT, Iowa kids were the second highest scoring in the country. Iowa’s average composite score was 22.3. Minnesota students scored 22.9, for the top spot.

Polk County Lends Hand and Money to Bridgestone Tire Expansion

The Polk County Board of Supervisors is throwing support behind the expansion project at Bridgestone America’s Tire Operations in Des Moines. The Supervisors approved a 50-thousand dollar zero interest loan and a 50-thousand dollar grant to help with the 56.6 million dollar construction. The project includes purchasing and installing new machinery and equipment into the existing facility. The expansion could create 72 new jobs.

New Deputy Clerk Joins West Des Moines Offices

West Des Moines has a new deputy clerk. Ryan Jacobson started his new job, last week. He replaces Fern Stewert, who’s now working at the West Des Moines Public Library. Jacobson was a records clerk in Ankeny and is working toward his Masters degree in public administration at Iowa State.

Fraud and Conspiracy: Prosecution Begins Case Against Film Official

The former director of the Iowa Film Office is on trial today in the Polk County Courthouse. Thomas Wheeler of Indianola faces nine counts of misconduct in office, fraudulent practices and conspiracy. In opening arguments, prosecutors told the jury he helped film producers create inflated budgets to qualify for millions in improper tax credits, in effect, costing Iowa taxpayers millions of dollars.

Ankeny Waits to See What Expansion Might to to Development


The Ankeny City Council decided to wait before voting on the Deer Creek development expansion. Council members want to see the results of a study that Polk County is doing on Four Mile Creek and Deer Creek. The two bodies of water meet in the middle of the neighborhood, and there are concerns about storm water runoff and effects of development on the drainage area on Ankeny’s far east side. The results are expected after the first of the year.

New Contract Incentive for Superintendent Approved.

The Superintendent of Des Moines Schools is going to get a big bonus, if she sticks around five more years. The Des Moines School Board voted to amend her contract, to reward Nancy Sebring for what they say is an outstanding performance. The District has had one of the highest student graduation rate increases and student achievement gains in 5-10 years. Sebring makes over 206-thousand dollars a year, but will receive 200-thousand dollars in incentives if she’s here in 2016.

Bridgestone Gets County Help

Bridgestone will get a loan and a grant since the Polk County Board of Supervisors approved it on Tuesday. Its a zero interest loan for 50 thousand dollars and a grant for 50 thousand dollars that will help with the company's 56 plus million dollar expansion. the board says the grant and loan are incentives that are part of an economic development package that the state should approve tomorrow. The expansion means that Bridgestone can buy new equipment for its current building.

Sebring in Line for Bonus

If she stays with it for another five years, Des Moines Schools Superintendent Nancy Sebring could get a 200 thousand dollar bonus. Sebring's annual salary, according to the contract is just over 206 thousand dollars. She'd also get benefits for the five years if the board fires her before the five years is up.

Three-year-old OK After Fall From Second Floor

A 3-year-old boy fell out a second story window in Des Moines Tuesday afternoon. Emergency officials said it happened just before 2 p.m. in the four thousand block of Easton Boulevard. Officials said Matthew Hilton got the window open, fell out onto the roof, then down to the ground. Matthew was conscious and crying when first responders took him to the hospital where he was checked out and the doctors said he'd be fine. So here's a tip: Lock your windows!

Move In Starts!

Moving can be a hassle, but how about thousands of college kids moving into the dorms in Ames? WHOA! The cars, pick ups and U-Hauls with stuff in them -- stuff those starting school this year will need to study, to learn, to make the dorm a home, to just LIVE! Some ten thousand students are moving in this week, providing they all have places to live. Iowa State has had to get creative to find places to house all those freshmen, since they're seeing an increase number in this year's enrollment.

Wheeler's Trial Started

The jury's been selected and the opening arguments have started in the case of the former director of the Iowa Film Office. Tom Wheeler faces at least nine counts of conspiracy, fraud and misconduct in office. Prosecutor charged in yesterday's opening statements that Wheeler illegally got hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax credits for film producers. The defense said their client did not gain anything and was honest as he ran the office alone. If he's convicted, Wheeler could be in prison for several years.

NWS in Tight With Iwoa State Fair Staff

In the wake of what happened at the Indiana State Fair last Saturday night, officials at the Iowa State Fair say they've taken extra steps to keep fair goers safe. They say there have been tornadoes in August, and that could prove deadly at any state fair. Meteorologist Jim Lee with the National Weather Service here said he spends his time at the fair doing a little community outreach, but mostly keeping his eye on the sky. NWS keeps in very close contact with state fair officials, they say, to give as much warning as possible about possibly dangerous weather.

Officers Hear Shots Fired, Arrest Three in Des Moines

Des Moines Police arrested 29 year old Morris Brannon, 27 year old Dominique Jackman and 20 year old Montray Cain, early this morning. Officers say they heard shots in the 1300 block of Carpenter Avenue, then they saw a speeding car. Brannon and Jackman were charged with possession of a weapon as a felon.

Bungee Bench Ride Break Down

A 23 year old from Corwith talked her nervous brother into coming onto the bungee bench ride, at the Iowa State Fair yesterday. They got more of a ride than they bargained for. Jenny Studer says she saw something fly off the ride and then, they were stuck. It was two and a half hours before firefighters lowered them to safety. They had to use a 158 foot long crane boom. 17 year old Derek Studer will likely not be talked on to a ride by his sister again. They were sunburnt and shaken, but otherwise unharmed, once they got their feet on the ground again.

Public Forum on Tax Abatements Tonight

Members of the Des Moines City Council will be debating whether to continue to offer a popular tax break that's been credited with bringing new development and people to the city. The residential tax abatement program for new construction and renovations expires at the end of the year, unless the Council renews it. Supporters says the incentive has spurred downtown development and home construction in neighborhoods like Easter Lake and Brook Run. Others say it's too generous, and the city coffers could use the tax money. There will be a public forum on the program tonight.

Severe Weather Possible This Afternoon

Some scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast. This afternoon, there's a slight chance the storms could turn severe. The main threats are damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service says an isolated tornado can not be ruled out.

Governor Thanks Some Lifesavers Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Governor Terry Branstad will honor 26 Iowa residents at the State Fair. They will all receive the Governor's Lifesaving Awards. The ceremony is in the Susan Knapp Amphitheater. It's free and open to the public and starts at 9am.

Victims from Vintage Plane Crash Identified

Federal officials are still investigating that crash of a vintage World War Two plane in a remote area near the Des Moines River, Saturday. 67 year old Timothy Griffin of West Des Moines and 52 year old Kendall Belz of Johnston died in the crash. They were voth veterans and friends who had been at a Military Appreciation Day event in Boone.

Des Moines Man Arrested After High Speed Weekend Chase

A 19 year old Des Moines man has been charged with felony eluding, failure to obey a stop sign, failure to wear a seat belt, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while barred. Craig Farnsworth was arrested in the 2900 block of Maple Street, Sunday night. Police say he led them on a high speed car chase through neighborhoods near the fairgrounds, then ditched the car. He was picked up and found to have 15 active warrants. Police also stopped 27 year old Allen Draper of Pleasant Hill. They believed he was a passenger in the car during the chase, but he's been released.

Superintendent Could See New Contract with Incentive to Stay

The Des Moines School Board is discussing ways to keep Superintendent Nancy Sebring. Board members will vote on whether to re-work her contract, so that she gets rewarded with a 200-thousand dollar bonus, if she stays in her job for another five years. The proposed contract would guarantee Sebring severance pay, if she's let go by a future board and allows for pay and benefits through the end of the contract, if she's released for any reason other than 'just cause.'

Job fair held tomorrow

The state program IowaWorks is hosting a job fair Wednesday afternoon at the Coralville Public Library. The fair will run from 2 to 4 p.m. inside the Schwab Auditorium. Manufacturing jobs will be the focus, but customer service, administrative support and other positions will be available as well. About 15 regional businesses will be there and the fair is open to the public.

Dubuque Woman Gets 78 Years for Daughter's Death

A Dubuque woman pleaded guilty yesterday to charges connected with her child's death. Tamelea Harris pleaded to child endangerment resulting in death and desecration of a corpse and will do 78 years.
Harris was originally charged with first degree murder in the death of 20 month old Cecelia. She's been in jail for more than a year when police started looking for the child and investigating the case. They said they found a child's remains in Harris' backyard.

Brother, Sister Get Stuck in State Fair Ride

Thankfully, it was nothing like what happened at the Indiana State Fair. Two teens were stuck way up in the air in a ride called the ejector seat at the Iowa State Fair yesterday. The ride got stuck in the up position for about two and a half hours, and officials say the brother and sister were fine, just thirsty when it was over. The private contractor that the fair hires got a crane and brought each of the teens down, one at a time, and all was well. They were identified as 23 year old Jenny Studer and 17 year old Derek Stuart of Corwinthnny Studer, 23, of Corwith, and Derek Stuart, 17, of Corwith,

Bennington Man Caught Doing 158 in a 55

A Bennington, Nebraska man is in a bit of trouble. The Nebraska State Patrol said they busted 20 year old Jonathan Goodburn after they chased him for about 20 minutes, or 32 miles. Do the math -- its a bit faster than the speed limit. Nebraska State Patrol said Goodburn was doing 158 in a 55, near 156th Street and West Dodge Road ths past Saturday. Goodburn faces ten charges including speeding -- told you he was in trouble!

Two Killed in Saturday Crash Identified

The FAA is investigating that plane crash that we told you about that happened in a remote part of Dallas County on Saturday, and now the two victims have been identified. KCCI TV reports that officials said Monday that pilot Timothy Griffith, of West Des Moines, and passenger, Kendall Belz, of Johnston, were killed in the crash. Investigators said the vintage WWII plane crashed near the Des Moines River, breaking apart upon impact.

Man Arrested for Asking for Sex with 13 year old

If a girl is 13, you can't marry her, and if her mother punches you out, that should get the point across. That's what Des Moines Police happened when 48 year old Robert Harding tried to grab a 13 year old girl. She ran for her mother who came and punched Harding in the face. Holly Pullen said Harding looked at her and said quote -- "I want to marry your daughter." That's when Pullen said she hit the guy. Police said Harding also fought with the girl's father and a family friend and told police he wanted to have sex with the child. Harding was arrested on related charges.Holly Pullen

Obama in Decorah

As Republican Presidential candidates are in the Hawkeye State, so is the man who currently holds the job. President Barack Obama was in Decorah verbally beating up on those who he said were trying to block his every move. The Des Moines Register reported that he said quote -- “You know what? You guys didn’t send us there to be thinking about our jobs. You sent us there to be thinking about your jobs.” The President will spend three days in the Midwest, making stops at home in Illinois.

Johnston Schools Want to Add an Elementary Building

Johnston School District is investigating the addition of a sixth elementary school, within two years. At a work session, last week, administrators learned there’s some debate over whether a school planned for the Crosshaven development on the north side of town has enough support to pass. Some board members say they want to learn more about other options, like using Johnston Middle School, which may be vacated by then.

Escaped Inmate Picked Up Friday After Failing to Show at Work Release Center


The Department of Corrections says officers picked up 49 year old Steve Simmons on Friday. He was reported missing from the Fort Des Moines work release center, on August 6th and was listed as on escape status. He served time for assault and theft in Polk County.

Investigation into Discipline of Fort Dodge Inmate Will Continue


A Polk County judge says the Iowa Department of Corrections can not block an investigation by the state ombudsman’s office into treatment of an inmate at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility. Judge Joel Novak ordered former Department of Corrections Administrative Law Judge Deborah Edwards to answer questions, under oath, about the disciplinary action she meted out against Randy Linderman, after he reportedly chest bumped corrections officer David Diemer in 2008.

Gas Pipeline Still Leaking, Crews haven't Found Source

A natural gas pipeline that runs under the Missouri River has a leak, and it’s unknown just how much has flowed downriver. Enterprise Products of Houston recorded a drop in pressure on Saturday and shut down the pipeline, from Decatur, Nebraska to just west of Onawah. Crews have still not found the leak, but it’s expected to be on the Iowa side of the line.

Maybe Iowa should be the Volunteers! U-S Census Bureau data shows the state is ranked second in the nation for the number of residents who volunteer. Almost 38 percent of Iowa residents volunteered, within the last three years, for a total of over 93 million hours.

Advertising Claims on Trial: Who Brings the Best Hot Dog?

The two largest hot dog makers in the country are taking their beef to federal court in Chicago. Oscar Mayer and Ball Park are accusing each other of breaking false advertising laws. Their parent companies are Sara Lee and Kraft, and the thousands of pages of filings in the pre-trial phase of the case shows the dog that reigns supreme is a serious matter. At issue, whether Oscar Mayer did, in fact, beat Ball Park in a national taste test, and whether it was a fair contest, and whether the Oscar Mayer Jumbo Beef Frank is 100 percent pure beef, as advertised.

Sugarland Cancels Iowa State Fiar Show

The Sugarland concert that was set for the Iowa State Fair was canceled after the Saturday night tragedy before their show at the Indiana State Fair. Five people were killed and 45 hurt when the stage on which the band was set to perform collapsed in 70 mile an hour winds. None of the band members were hurt.

Big Boar and Big Ram are Big Winners


Tiny is the winner of the Biggest Boar crown at the Iowa State Fair. He’s a Hampshire boar, wearing almost 12-hundred pounds. The Big Ram winner is Lover Boy, coming in at a record 483 pounds. They’re on display through August 21st.

USDA says Iowa Corn Yield Better than Last Year and National Average


The U-S Department of Agriculture says the state’s corn yield will be 12 bushels per acre higher than in 2010. The national yield is expected to be down, because of poor planting conditions in the north and east and a drought in the south. Prices are projected to stay in the seven dollars per bushel range.

Now He's Going to be in a REALLY Good Mood


A man from West Des Moines has won a nationwide contest with Arby’s. The fast food chain asked customers to submit a video version of the It’s Good Mood Food song. Andy Johnson says he’s truly a fan of Arby’s and spent about 24 hours putting the video together. He won ten thousand dollars and will appear in a commercial.

Man Told to Wait for Cops when Caught Stealing

A 41 year old Des Moines man was arrested for attempted theft. Police say he was caught red handed by the owner of United Heating and Cooling on East 50th Street. Dustin Wipf had returned to the business, with a friend, to work on a vehicle and found Timothy Mericle loading a 9-thousand dollar air conditioner and two air compressors into a truck. He told them he needed the money to pay bills.

New census figures show the numbers of households with extended families living together is on the rise, and analysts say that’s in large part due to the economy. The number of households with six or more people in Iowa increased nearly 17 percent in the last ten years. There are 30 percent more nonrelatives living in households. And, over 40 percent more people living with a grandparent.

Iowa State University Popular with Employees


An online job and career community has ranked Iowa State University the second best school to work for in the United States. The glassdoor.com ranking was based on a survey of college employees, asked about things like funding considerations, the work environment, salary and benefits. The University of Kansas scored just one tenth of a point higher, at number one.

GOP Files Complaint About Redistricting

Republicans have filed an official complaint about the Polk County redistricting plan, saying it favors incumbent Democrats. The protest was filed with the Iowa Secretary of State. The new map sent to the state puts two incumbent Republican supervisors in the same district, so Robert Brownell of Clive and EJ Giovannetti of Urbandale would have to run against each other.

Fire Department will have Medical Staff on Hand Soon


The Polk City Fire Department is going to be staffed with emergency medical professionals, starting this fall. City Council members unanimously approved the move, this week. Fire Chief Jason Morse says about three fourths of all calls have a medical component. So, for the first time, members of the department are going to be paid to be at the station, from 6am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Members of the department are volunteer and on-call status, paid per incident, but this will allow for much better response times.

Crowd Not Friendly to Romney

Mitt Romney went to the Iowa State Fair yesterday and got into a shouting match with the crowd. He tried to speak to them about his campaign, they irrupted with chanting "Wall Street greed." After several incidents of being interrupted, Romney pointed at them and shouted back that they should give him a chance. He said quote -- "If you want to speak, you can. But it's my turn.''

Iowa Man Back Facing Murder, Kidnapping Charges

An Iowa man is back in the state from South Dakota to face charges. Thomas Peterson of Greene is accused of killing his wife and kidnapping their son. He was in custody yesterday in the Butler County Jail and will be in court tomorrow. Peterson faces first degree murder charge for allegedly stabbing his wife. Police said he then fled with their two year old son.

Tips Coming In on Missing Couple

There are no major breaks yet, but there are tips coming in about that couple missing from Warren County, now that a sketch of a person of interest has been released. Bill and Kay Wood's home burned in late July. A man's body was found there, but police say it hasn't been identified. Bill and Kay are still missing. Their truck was found in Kansas City on the day of the fire.

Sub Busted

Thirty three year old Chad Ziesman was a substitute teacher at Urbandale Middle School, and yesterday, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor. Police said they started investigating when a 14 year old student said she got inappropriate text messages and emails from Ziesman. He resigned from his teaching position after he was arrested.

Tiny Wins Biggest Boar, Fatty Does Not

It wasn't exactly a beauty contest, but Tiny Beat Fatty at the Iowa State Fair. Yes, at 1196 pounds, Tiny won the Biggest Boar crown. Fatty only weighed 1174 pounds. Tiny is owned by Blake Everman of Postville Fatty is owned by Ben and Neal Wikner of Farmersburg. Tiny will be on display at the swine barn. Fatty will not.

Police Looking for Man After Chase

Des Moines police are looking for a man who led them on a short chase yesterday. He's identified as John Wilson. Police said he ran a stop sign and was hit by a minivan and the vehicle chase was over. But Wilson fled on foot and was last seen in the 3500 block of Urbandale Avenue. If you know where police can find John Wilson, give them a call.

GOP Debate Tonight, Palin Tomorrow

She’s not officially a candidate for President, yet, but former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin is coming to Iowa, this week, anyway. She has been traveling the country in a bus and told supporters her tour stops at the Iowa State Fair tomorrow, on the eve of the GOP Presidential Straw Poll. The Republican debate is on in Ames, tonight. But, Palin is not on the panel.

Man Tries to Get Girl into Alley, Gets Beat Up

A 48 year old man is in custody for enticement. Des Moines police say Robert Harding tried to lure a 13 year old girl into an alley. She was playing outside with a friend near her house, yesterday. She told her mother a man was motioning for her to join him. When the mother confronted him, he asked how old the girl was and if he could marry her.

Governor and Insurer Kick off Healthiest State Initiative

Governor Terry Branstad is launching a campaign to make Iowans more healthy. The state was ranked 19th in the nation for overall wellness, and Branstad announced, yesterday, that he wants Iowa to be #1 by 2016.

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield is Iowa’s largest health insurer, and the company is on board with the Healthiest State Initiative. Officials agreed to spend up to 25 million dollars over the next five year to help local communities adopt what they call “blue zone” approaches to improving physical and emotional health. There’s a benefit to the company too. Researchers say even minor changes toward healthier behavior could lead to billions of dollars in savings, because of reduced health care costs.

Board of Trade Waits for Report on Corn Yields

Corn prices were unchanged in Chicago, on the Board of Trade, yesterday. But Corn traders will be looking at the supply and demand report that’s coming out from the U-S Department of Agriculture. It will update yield forecasts, based on hot weather of the last few weeks. The July forecast put the national yield at 158.7 bushels per acre. Some private forecasters say the heat stress and potential for damage during pollination may force the USDA to cut those estimates to as low as 153 bushels per acre. Supplies are already low.

Residents Near the Fairgrounds are Worried about Violence

Not everyone is excited about the opening of the Iowa State Fair. Residents who live near the fairgrounds remember violence and last year’s fights at the Quick Trip. Despite added security, this year, there are rumors that some people are planning to bring guns into the fair to protect themselves, that there will be more brawls at night. Police are reminding all residents that guns are illegal on the fairgrounds, even if the owner has a permit.

Waukee Schools Work to Ease Overcrowding with New Building

The Waukee school board is moving forward with plans to build a seventh elementary school. Board members approved the purchase of land at the intersection of Stagecoach and 96th Streets in West Des Moines. It’s 18 acres. The purchase price is 760-thousand dollars. Construction will begin next spring, with an opening expected in the fall of 2013 to help ease overcrowded conditions in the grade schools.

27,000 Fish Killed

The DNR is investigating a fish kill after a manure spill. Officials said some 27 thousand fish were killed in the South Skunk River near the Story-Hamilton County line. The fish kill, officials said, was traced back to a manure storage facility at a hog confinement near Randall. About a thousand of the fish that were killed were identified as small mouth bass. There were also channel catfish, sunfish, bullhead and bluegill killed.

Hardiman Enters Alford Plea for Involuntary Manslaughter

An 18-year-old Cedar Rapids man isn't pleading guilty, but agrees there's enough evidence to convict him. That's why Ramius Hardiman entered and Alford plea to an involuntary manslaughter charge yesterday in Linn County. The charge is in connection with the crash last November that killed 17 year old Jose Mendoza and in which Hardiman was allegedly driving drunk. Hardiman could get as much as five years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter charge, but the prosecution says it will ask for probation at sentencing. Its not known when that will happen.

Bad Rice Leads to Fight

A waitress and her customer got into a fight at a Des Moines restaurant on Tuesday, and a third person got injured when she tried to break up the fight. It started when a woman went to the Rolling Wok Cafe and ordered rice. Police said the customer told the waitress the rice was not good, so the waitress brought more rice and some noodles, but still the customer was not satisfied. When the customer paid for the food, she made a comment about the waitress and they got into it, one slapped the other, pushed her away and the third person tried to break them up. She told police she hurt her knee in the process.

GOP Hopefuls are Here

Bachman's in Urbandale, Pawlenty is in Winterset, and Romney's in Pella. Three candidates, three Iowa towns ahead of the straw poll and Republican debate this week. The Ames Straw Poll is at the Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, as are those three candidates, and three more: Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain. And so will be about 800 journalists.

Three Arrested with Fake Bomb

Three African refugees were arrested for trying to carry a fake bomb through the airport in Phoenix, and one of the three is from Des Moines. Police said they don't know why the three were carrying the device, but say they could be terrorists, or they could be testing the airport's security system. Police concerns were raise because of the closeness to the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks and a possible relationship to this incident. The investigation continues.

Palin and Politics at the Fair

The Iowa State Fair starts today, and amid all the butter cows, the hoopla, the food and the fun, the politicians will show up too. Sarah Palin will be at the fair on Friday, so says Palin's team. The GOP nationally televised debate is that same week and so is the Iowa Straw Poll. Since Palin isn't a candidate, she won't be involved in those events.

Cable Barriers Being Installed

Cable barriers are going into the medians on I-380 in Linn and Johnson counties, and its hoped that the number of accidents will be reduced, The project started last month using several strands of settl cable which grabs an out of control vehicle, keeping it from going into traffic going the opposite direction. Expect to seel cables in Iowa and Cedar Counties too.

A Century of Cows at the State Fair

The Iowa State Fair is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the butter cow, this year. The fair opens tomorrow, and there will be over 100 cows, in all shapes, sizes and materials around the fair grounds. Fair food will include fried butter on a stick

Waterloo Woman Faces 5 Years for Driving into Group

A 22 year old Waterloo woman pleaded guilty to going armed with intent and leaving the scene of an accident. Tiffany Sykes says she drove over a curb to hit people she was fighting with and struck a child in a stroller on May 31st. She will be sentenced September 8th.

Mason City Shooting Suspect Arrested

Mason City police were called to the Casey’s General Store on North Federal Avenue, last night about five, where they found a shooting victim lying in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead, last night, and a suspect was arrested, but police are not releasing any names or details, yet.

Person of Interest in Case of Missing Warren County Couple

Police have released a sketch of a man who is described as a person of interest in the case of Bill and Kay Wood. The couple vanished on July 30th, just before his family was set to throw him a surprise party for his 80th birthday. Their house in rural Warren County was found engulfed in flames. A badly burned body was found inside. Then, their truck was found in Kansas City, Missouri. The body has not been identified. The sketch is of the man witnesses saw driving the truck. He’s described as around 50, over six feet tall, slender, with short gray hair. Call 323-4360 with any information.

8 GOP Candidates Qualify for Ames Debate

There will be eight presidential candidates participating in the GOP Debate, tomorrow night. The nationally televised two hour debate will start at 8pm, with Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich.

Kosovo Delegation Arriving Today

Leaders from Kosovo are arriving in Des Moines today. There is a 16 member delegation that is going to visit, under a newly established state partnership program, with the National Guard. The visitors will check out the Iowa State Fair, Iowa State University, farmers and livestock producers and medical facilities.

Support for Continuing Tax Abatement Program

At a public meeting, last night, some 30 developers, real estate agents and neighborhood leaders told city officials that the property tax break for new residential construction and renovation projects is breathing new life into Des Moines. The group wants the City Council to continue the tax abatement program, which expires on December 31st. Supporters credit the program for development in Easter Lake, Brook Run and some older neighborhood revitalization efforts.

African Refugees Arrested by TSA Say They're Transporting Device to Des Moines

Police in Phoenix have arrested three African refugees who tried to carry what appeared to be an explosive device onto a plane. One of them, a 51 year old refugee from Ethiopia, told investigators that an acquaintance gave her the device and asked her to deliver it to an unknown person in Des Moines. The Transportation Security Administration discovered a cellphone attached to a container that had organic material in it, during a routine security check at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

More Flights to Florida This Winter

Frontier Airlines announced there will be more flights to Florida, this winter. The Denver airline is going to add direct flights from Des Moines to Orlando and Tampa twice a week, starting December 15th. The introductory fares start at 99 to 119 dollars each way, with some restrictions.

4 Months Ago: Ashley Okland Murdered

It’s been four months since real estate agent Ashley Okland was gunned down in a West Des Moines model home. Police say they still believe there are people in the area with information crucial to the case. Polk County Crime Stoppers is offering a 75 thousand dollar reward at 223-1400.

2 Dogs Don't Make it Out of Morning House Fire

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze at 39th and School Streets, this morning. A neighbor noticed flames and called it in about 2:30. Fire crews were able to keep the fast moving blaze from spreading to the houses next door. The entire second floor became so engulfed, it dropped onto the first floor and into the basement. There were no injuries to residents, but two of the owner’s dogs died in the fire. Damages are estimated at 85-thousand dollars.

Franklin Field Sold for Senior Housing

Des Moines City Council members approved selling a two acre piece of public green space, last night. Developers John and Tim Mauro have proposed a six million dollar plan to build 40 apartments for low income seniors near 52nd Street and Franklin Avenue. The property is listed on the city’s web site as a park. Appraisers put the value of the land, which is known as Franklin Field, at 173-thousand dollars.

Red Light Cameras Nab 1000+ in Five Weeks

Des Moines police say more than one thousand drivers got caught red handed, proceeding through red lights in just five weeks with cameras at five different intersections. More than half of those were at the intersection of East 15th and Maple Streets and where Army Post Road meets Southeast Fifth Street. Warnings were issued to the drivers caught between June 27 and July 3rd. After that, the offenders should have received 65 dollar tickets in the mail.

Des Moines City Council Approved YWCA Demolition

Des Moines City Council members cleared the way for crews to start demolition of the vacant YWCA building, downtown. Dore and Associates Contracting, a Michigan firm, won the contract, and work was approved, last night. Council members are hoping once the site on Grand Avenue is empty, a redevelopment proposal will emerge.

The Up Side to the Market Fall

On the bright side, oil prices fell more than five dollars per barrel, which should lead to decreases at the pump. Estimates are that the average price per gallon will be around $3.25 by the end of the week.

Big Losses for Iowa Companies Yesterday

All eyes are on the markets, today, after yesterday’s nationwide sell off. Iowa’s twenty largest publicly traded companies lost a collective two point two billion dollars of market value. That’s a bigger loss in one day than all of last week, combined. Principal Financial Group took one of the worst hits. The state’s largest insurer lost 11.5 percent of its value.

UNI Pres Donating Raise to Scholarships

University of Northern Iowa President Ben Allen got a 4% raise form the board of regents, and he's not going to keep the $12,800. Allen's released a statement saying he and his wife will be give the money to the UNI Foundation for scholarships and other student support. They're setting up an endowment fund to provide scholarships for women in math and science. Before the raise Allen was being paid 320,000/year.

New Ankeny High to Open August 15th

Students and teachers are getting their first looks at a noticeably bigger and brighter Ankeny High School this week. Boxes are being unpacked and signs posted as the district readies for the first day of school Aug. 15. The Des Moines Register reports the new high school be home for around 1,000 juniors and seniors will be there for this school year and next. For the 2013 school year, the district will divide 10th to 12th grades between Ankeny High and Ankeny Centennial High Schools.

Des Moines Teen Arerested Packing Heat

A 17-year-old was arrested this morning after Des Moines Police say he pulled a handgun and threatened to shoot a group of people involved in a fight. It incident took place in the 900 block of Oakridge Drive. The Des Moines Register says police have charged him with concealing and carrying a dangerous weapon. Allen was taken to the Polk County Jail, then transferred to Meyer Hall, a juvenile detention center.

Fatal Crash on University

A woman was killed in a crash in Pleasant Hill just before noon on Thursday. The crash happened at the intersection of 60th Street and University Avenue near the Highway 65 bypass. A white pickup truck collided with a medical transport van that was turning onto University Avenue. Witnesses said rescue crews performed CPR on a passenger in the van, but couldn't revive the woman. A medical helicopter was also called to the scene. The person's name has not yet been released.

A class-action lawsuit's been filed in federal court against Electrolux. It claims the 200-people who've signed on so far, are owed millions because the company required them to arrive for their shift 10-to-15-minutes early to put on their safety gear and get to their work stations, with no compensation for the extra time.

Big Copper Theft in Des Moines

There's been another copper heist in Des Moines. POlice say someone stole a construction trailer outside Roosevelt High School Wednesday night. There was 800 pounds of copper inside. KCCI reports metal thefts are a lot more common with near-record prices for copper, platinum, aluminum and other metals. Thieves have been targeting catalytic converters on cars and copper wiring and then selling them to scrap yards.

TPI Threat

Newton Police are investigating a bomb threat at the TPI composite factory last night. WHO TV reports all the employees were evacuated around 11 last night, while police checked out the threat. They were allowed back into the building at 2 this morning.

Mom Takes Baby on Dangerous Joyride

22-year old Rena Gai had a rough Tuesday night. Des Moines Police say she came home from work to find her front door kicked in and her brother and his girlfriend, both appearing intoxicated, in her Crocker St. apartment. It went downhill from there. Police tell KCCI 25-year old Wendy Horn, the girlfriend, assaulted her, grabbed her own daughter, got in her truck, and left. A couple of hit and runs, including an injured cyclist, police caught Horn. Among the charges against her: burglary, OWI, and child endangerment.

WDM Home Invasion

West Des Moines Police are looking for clues in a home invasion robbery Sunday morning. Police a woman and her teen daughter were tied up in their South 61st Street home. Then suspect asked for money, then went through the mother's purse. ABC5 reports police aren't saying how much money was taken, and they don't know if it was a random crime or if the victims were specific targets. .

Woman Pleads to Using Car as Weapon

A Waterloo woman's pleaded guilty to charges she drove her car onto a sidewalk, and hit a baby in a stroller. KCCI reports 22-year old Tiffany Sykes
pleaded to going armed with intent and leaving the scene of an accident. Police say May 31st Skyes got into a fight with several people, then got in her car, and drove on the sidewalk going after them. She did it several times before hitting the stroller. She fled the scene, but turned herself in later. She faces up to 5-years.

Golf Coach Sentenced to Time Served for OWI

The Iowa high school golf coach charged with driving drunk while taking her team to a meet has been sentenced to the jail time she’s already served and fined $1,875. 59-year old Susie Lynn Steinbeck, of Fairfield, was sentenced in Lee County District Court for OWI and one count of child endangerment. Steinbeck, who quit as coach and middle-school teacher at Fairfield in June, had a BAC of .212 the morning she was arrested in May.

Missing Warren County Couple's Truck Found in Missouri

Authorities have recovered the pickup truck owned by a missing Warren County couple whose home was destroyed in a weekend fire. According to the Des Moines Register, James Wood's pickup was found Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri. 79-year old James and 72-year old Kaidena Wood were last seen Saturday morning. A body was found in their burned out home Sunday, and officials have been unable to identify it so far. Their house fire's considered suspicious.

Windsor Heights Home Haz Waste Clean-up

The Metro Waste Authority's running a household hazardous waste clean-up, August 27th, from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 27, in Colby Park, 6900 School St. in Windsor Heights. Residents can bring lead- and oil-based paints (but not latex paints), chemicals such as insecticides, poisons and solvents, lawn products, CFLs and cleaners to the event for proper disposal.

Freee Health Screenings for Polk County Families

Polk County families without enough health insurance or access to health car, can take their preschool to high school age kids to Des Moines' East High School for free physicals, health screenings, and school supplies. The health fair is 1-to-7p.m. tomorrow at 815 E. 13th St. Local health professionals will provide physicals, vision and dental screenings, and immunizations. Children getting care will get a free backpack filled with grade-specific school supplies.

Suspicious Device Detonated in Des Moines

The Des Moines bomb squad blew up a suspicious device this afternoon in the 3300 block of East Payton Avenue near Easter Lake. Authorities were alerted by a report of the device on the roadway. A KCCI viewer reports she was blocked from entering the area because a pipe bomb had been found under a bridge. The same viewer says there were some homes evacuated close to the scene.

New Info in Couple's Disappearance

There are new clues in the disappearance of a Warren County couple. Bill and Kay Wood have been missing since a fire destroyed their home late Saturday night. One body was recovered from inside the home. An autopsy completed Monday afternoon did not reveal a cause of death or an identity. The State Medical Examiner's office said they have been asked to withold the gender of the body, and other information that might be considered public record, by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. DCI has also spoken with neighbors, and asked them to keep what was talked about quiet.

Cubby's Robbed Again

Police are looking for a young Native American man after this mornings robbery at the Cubby's Convenience store in Western Sioux Falls. KDLT reports it happened around 4:30a.m. Sioux Falls Police say one man held the store's door open while another man entered, showed a knife, and demanded money. The suspects got away with an undetermined amount of cash. The second suspect had a black cloth over his face. It's the 3rd robbery at Cubby's in less than a month.

Anti-Smokers Worried

Non-smoking supporters say they're not sure the state's still interesting in helping people quit smoking. Bonnie Mapes, long-time director of the Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, has been let go. The Des Moines Register reports a letter from State Senator Herman Quirmbach says Public Health Director Mariannette Miller-Meeks wants to get rid of the Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Commission, and has no interest in a tobacco control policy.

Retailer Kohl's plans to open a new store in Fort Dodge next month, adding 130-jobs. Branstad Selling Iowa in Chicago

Gov. Branstad's heading to Chicago this week on an economic development trip. He's expected to talk to business leaders there about moving to or expanding here. He'll be in Chicago Thursday and Friday to sell Iowa's economic opportunities, and promote this state's eager and hard-working work force, along with other positive attributes to attract businesses to the state.

Workforce Development Layoffs

Payoff notices are on the way for up to 95-people working at 35 of the state's Workforce Development field offices that are shutting down. Last week, Gov. Branstad rejected language in a bill that would have kept those office open. KCCI reports the first 45 jobs and 31-offices should be gone in 2 to three months. The rest by the end of the year.
