FB Post Nets DM Police Arrest in Basilica Break In

Des Moines Police say a post to their Facebook page helped track an items stolen in a break in last month at the Basilica of St. John's. Gift cards were on the items stolen, and one of them was used. Video surveillance caught two men, so they posted the video and asked for help. Someone recognized one of them, who was contacted by police, who told officers who he got the card from. Eric Thompson's charged with control over stolen property.

Branstad Leans on Legisature for Property Tax Reform

Gov. Branstad's turning up the heat on the legislature to approve property tax reform along with state spending before they adjourn a session that's already two weeks past its' scheduled end. There weren't many lawmakers at the Capitol today as leaders from both parties continued negotiations on the budget and education reforms. Branstad wants a 40% cut in business property taxes over 8-years. Democrats want a smaller cut targeting small businesses.

State Suspends Payments to DM Charity-A New Beginning

The State Human Services Department's stopped payments to taxpayer-funded Des Moines charity, A New Beginning that provides counseling for children and families. The Des Moines Register reports the state's looking into what it calls credible allegations that the charity billed taxpayers for services never provided. The state says the amount involved is $266,000.

Who Opened Fire on Ankeny PD Headquarters?

Ankeny Police are reviewing surveillance video of the exterior of their headquarters on SW Ordnance Road, trying to find out who fired several shots at the building late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. New Ass't Principal at Indianola High School

Indianola High School has a new assistant principal. Craig Calhoun's been hired to fill the job that bused to belong to John Taylor. Calhoun's currently assistant school principal and activities director for Carlisle High School. Taylor's not leaving the district, he is moving to fill a counselors post he applied for internally.

How Many Students Won't Be at East High's Prom?

Administrators at other Des Moines schools are watching what happens as prom night rolls around at East High tomorrow. East is the only school with a no class no prom policy. Students with one or more unexcused absences from March 13 through today won't be going to the prom. The new policy's part of a push to boost attendance.

Protesters at UNI Bd of Regents Meeting

A group of about 150 students, faculty and parents demonstrated at today’s Iowa Board of Regents meeting. The shutdown of UNI’s Malcolm Price Lab School, the elimination of 20% of academic programs and buyout offers to more than 40 tenured faculty have drawn steady criticism, despite a $5-million budget hole. Protesters say Regents don't have the power to close the lab school, and that some of the money spent on athletics should go for academics.

Woman Taken Off Flight Over Missing Wallet

Des Moines Police say a woman refused to take her seat on a United Airlines flight earlier this week because her wallet was missing. The woman had left the wallet on her seat while she used a bathroom, and it was gone when she got back to her seat. She was taken off the plane when she wouldn't sit down. The flight got to Chicago, where he wallet was found. She took a later flight and was reunited with her property.

DM Home of Obama's Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies Closing

Des Moines' Baby Boomers restaurant is closing for good this weekend. The restaurant's chocolate chip cookies were declared his favorite by then Sen. Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign. Co-owner Rodney Maxfield tells KCCI they wouldn't have the business they've had without the Obama's. The restaurant's not closing for lack of business. Maxfield says it's just time to start living. Sunday's their last day.

Settlement Reached in Heemstra Wrongful Death Case

A Warren County judge today approved a settlement in the Rodney Heemstra case. Heemstra shot and killed neighbor Tom Lyon in a land dispute. He served time for Manslaughter. He was ordered 3-years ago to pay the Lyon family $6.8-million in damages and fees for wrongful death. He hasn't paid a dime, but the deal today calls for court monitored real estate sales, with the proceeds going to pay his creditors, the state Revenue Department and the IRS.

Polk County Jury Convicts Elliot

A Polk County jury's convicted 30-year old Matthew Elliot of child endangerment causing death and willful injury causing serious injury in the killing of 7-month old Alexis Gilbert in January 2008. Elliot could be sentenced to up to 35 years in prison. He was convicted of child endangerment and willful injury in 2009, but a new trial was ordered over the possibility that jury heard improper testimony about a detective's conversations with the infants' 7 year old uncle.

WDM PD Beefing up Enforcement for Drake Relays

Extra officers will on the streets of West Des Moines this weekend, making sure you stay say. The beefed up presence is tied to the crowds expected in the area for the Drake Relays. The extra patrols will be on Friday through Sunday. They're hoping the higher visibility will deter drivers from drinking and driving. The enforcement's being paid for with a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

State House Leaders Send Member Home

Leaders of the Iowa House have given their members a green light to head home for the weekend. The problem is no deal on the budget. House Republican and Senate Democratic leaders are staying behind to keep talking and try to resolve their differences. In addition to the budget, there's work still to be done on Commercial property tax reform, and K-12 education reform.

Parade to Honor Veterans in Des Moines in June

Iowa veterans be saluted this summer with the “Salute to our Veterans and Service Members Parade” in downtown Des Moines, Saturday June 30th. Gov. Branstad says the parade will start at the Statehouse and an end at Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. State House Passes Mental Health Reform

The Iowa House today passed an overhaul of the state's mental health system. The bill creates a regional network to provide quality and consistent service statewide. The House bill now goes to the State Senate where they've already passed a similar bill. There are some minor differences between the two, but the Senate's expected to approve the House version. It's expected to cost the state $52 million to take over some of the services now being run by counties.

WDM School Board Decides Cuts Tonight in Special Meeting

West Des Moines' school board has a special meeting tonight to make a final decision on proposals to cut staff and programs for the 2012-13 school year. The Des Moines Register reports last night's board meeting was packed by students, teachers, and residents worried about proposed cuts, including reassigning 5-elementary school reading teachers.

Carlisle Schools Dismissed Early After Bomb Threat

Carlisle Middle School was evacuated this morning after a student found a message in a bathroom this morning containing a bomb threat. The note was found about 10a.m., and the student immediately reported it, and the evacuation was ordered. Carlisle Middle students were moved to the high school, then the decision was made to dismiss all schools early and notify parents.

Google Iowa Expansion Official

It's official, Google's building a $300 million data center in Council Bluff's, near a $600-million facility they already have. KCCI reports this will initially add 35 new jobs, with possible 50-more down the road. The state Economic Development Authority approved over $9 million in tax credits for this latest Google project.

Victims Identified in Friday Cedar Rapids Shooting

Cedar Rapids Police have identified the three people shot at Kirkwood Court Apartments Friday. They're 21-year old Shannon Gaskins, who lives at the apartment, 22-year-old Alexander White of Cedar Rapids, and 24-year-old Raymond Sellers of Chicago. According to KCCI, all three are expected to recover, but there's been no information released on who shot them or why.

Beaudrie Won't Fight Extradition Back to Des Moines

James Beaudrie won't fight extradition here from Chicago, and Des Moines Police say he should be back by the middle of next week. The 36-year old Beaudrie skipped town after a warrant was issued for his arrest on multiple counts of third-degree sexual abuse over alleged incidents involving three of his 9-kids. U.S. Marshals caught up with him Friday at his mothers' apartment in Chicago. He's been in the Cook County Jail since then.

Man Killed In Balcony Fall in Ames

A man killed in a four story fall over the weekend in Ames has been identified as 21-year old Mitchell Odell of Cedar Rapids. Ames Police tell KCCI witness say the fall, from the balcony of a building at 2519 Chamberlain St. was an accident. Odell was among thousands in Ames for the annual VEISHEA celebration at Iowa State University.

DM Area Traffic Light Timing Could Be Better

Rising gas prices have many drivers wondering when traffic engineers are going to get in gear on improving the timing of Des Moines area traffic lights. The Des Moines Register reports engineers say the wait at a red light shouldn't be longer than 90-seconds to two minutes, except for those on side streets at major intersections. There are plans for signal upgrades on some major suburban streets.

Demonstrators Block Wells Fargo Branch Entrance

Members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement risked arrest this afternoon when about ten of them linked arms and blocked the entrance to a Wells Fargo bank branch in downtown Des Moines. Members tell KCCI they want Wells Fargo to pay its fair share of taxes and be a good citizen. They carried signs reading: "People before polluters."

President Obama's Visit to UI

More details on Obama UI visit
When President Barack Obama comes to Iowa, on Wednesday, he will speak at the University of Iowa Field House, 225 South Grand Ave., around 1 p.m., and doors open at 10 a.m.
The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and will be available at the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union starting at noon tomorrow. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Due to space considerations, a limited number of tickets will be available and are limited to one per person, and are not for sale or re-sale.
Parking near the Field House will be limited, and attendees are strongly encouraged to use public transportation.
All attendees for President Obama’s visit will be required to pass through airport-like security and should bring as few personal items as possible. Bags, sharp objects, umbrellas, liquids, and signs are not allowed in the venue. Cameras are permitted.

Cedar Rapids Shooting

According to Cedar Rapids police, at least two people were wounded in a shooting at an apartment complex near Kirkwood Community College.
According to Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, the shooting happened at mid-day yesterday in the Kirkwood Court Apartments, and two shooting victims were taken to hospital. A third shooting victim then showed up at a hospital in a private vehicle a few minutes later, but according to investigators, it is unknown whether that incident is related.
Kirkwood Community College and other nearby schools were locked down, as a precaution, until 2 p.m.
At the time of the report, it was unknown whether students were involved in the shooting.

Shootings Lead to Lockdown in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids Police say two people were wounded in a shooting at Kirkwood Court Apartments today. A short time later, another shooting victim showed up at another hospital. All three are in critical condition. The victims shot at Kirkwood are a 21-year old woman, and a 22-man. Investigators say they don't know if all three were shot at the same place. The shooting led to a lockdown at Kirkwood Community College and several area schools.

Goole Wants to Beef Up Council Bluffs Investment

Google is looking to raise it's stake in Council Bluffs, with another $300 million expansion. The state Economic Development Authority today agreed to provide $9.6 million in tax credits for the project, which is expected to create 35 jobs to start and another 15 in the long run. If the deal proceeds, Google's investment in Council Bluffs would by $900-million.

Branstad Releases Income Taxes

Gov. Branstad released his income tax returns today. He earned over $190,000 last year, and paid $24,000 in taxes. KCCI reports his annual salary is $116,000/year, with a $53,000 pension from his first 4 year term as Governor. He paid almost $18,000 in federal, $4,500 in Social Security, $1,770 in Medicaid, and $52 in state income taxes. His deductions included investment loses and contributions to his grand children's college fund.

US Airways Gets Backing of American Unions for Merger

The don't have a deal to merge, but KCCI reports US Airways has come to terms with American Airlines unions on supporting a merger between the two carriers. Both airlines serve Des Moines International. American's in bankruptcy protection, and wants to toss all of its existing labor contracts,impose its own terms, and cut 13,000 jobs. US Airways says a merger could save close to half those jobs.

Police Stepping Up Traffic Enforcement Tomorrow Night

Be on your best behavior behind the wheel tomorrow night. Multiple law enforcement agencies in northern Polk County will be watching. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says they'll be specifically looking for people driving under the influence and not wearing a seat belt. The sheriff's department says it's always a good idea to have a designated driver for the night if there's going to be drinking.

Polk County Whooping Cough Cases Up

Polk County health officials say they now have 31-confirmed cases of whooping cough, up from 18 last week. Concern led 200 parents, students and district employees to get vaccinated last Thursday. KCCI reports the cases appear to be centered at three south side schools: Lincoln High, Lincoln South and Weeks Middle.

Wrongful Death Suit Over I-80 Crash

A wrongful death suit's been filed by the estate of Jesse Inman. The tow truck operator and three others died when they were hit by a semi on I-80 while working to move a disabled semi last September. The suit's against Hiner Transport, owner of the semi involved in the crash. Inman was married with three daughters.

Beaudrie Captured in Chicago

A nationwide manhunt for James Beaudrie, ended this morning with his capture in Chicago. U.S. Marshals say he ran out the back of an apartment just as agents were coming in the front door. They got the address as a possible listing for his mother. Beaudrie's expected to held in the Cook County Jail waiting extradition here to face multiple third degree sex abuse charges.

Appeal Promised in Suit Against State Over Minority Hiring Practices

The rejection of a class-action racial bias suit against the state yesterday, got strong reaction today. The NAACP and plaintiffs told a news conference this morning that the court was more interested in saving the state money than getting justice for African-Americans. They also promised to appeal and continue to press the case for 6,000 black plaintiffs passed over for state jobs between 2003 and 2007.

Federal Judge Considering Sanction for Failure to Disclose GPS Tracker Use in Drug trial

A federal judge's considering sanctions against prosecutors ruling that a DEA agent's decision not to disclose the use of GPS tracking devices on drug suspect Angel Amaya. The judge found the warrantless tracking was legal since there was reasonable suspicion the vehicles were being used for drug trafficking, but failing to mention their use in reports on the investigation was an 'act in bad faith.'

Polk County Judge Rejects Class Action Racial Discrimination Suit

A Polk County judge has turned down a class-action lawsuit alleging that Iowa’s failure to monitor its state hiring system improperly allowed decades “of implicit bias” to creep into personnel decisions and unintentionally harm blacks. District Judge Robert Blink's ruling found that an admittedly “uncommon approach” by plaintiffs in Pippen v. State of Iowa failed to prove what's necessary to win a discrimination lawsuit under state and federal law.

Chew Your Food

A new Iowa State study says you should chew your food thoroughly, and it could help improve your health and help you eat less. KCCI reports the ISU study found proper chewing, about 40-times per bite, helped cut how much study participants ate. The study found not only a reduction in hunger, but also less preoccupation with food and a desire to eat.

Marshals Helping in Search for James Beaudrie

U.S. Marshals have joined Des Moines Police trying to find 36-year old James Beuadrie. He's wanted on for 8-counts of sex abuse in alleged incidents involving three of his 9-kids. His wife's been charged with neglect. The Des Moines Register reports a Polk County judge ordered Kijua Beaudrie to have no contact with any of her children, and set bond at $30,000. James Beaudrie's van was found a few days ago in Utah.

IWD Ending Face to Face Claimant Help

Iowa Workforce Development's going to continue offering face-to-face help to people with unemployment claims issues. That comes a day after a new policy started directing those issues to a toll-free phone line for the downtown Des Moines Office. An IWD spokesperson says the toll free number, 866-239-0843, will be available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays.

Lawmakers May Be Closing In On Educartion Reform Compromise

State House Republicans and Senate Democrats appear to be narrowing the differences between their positions on education reform. The Des Moines Register reports House leaders put a plan on the table responding to a Senate K-12 plan passed last week. It drops some things already rejected by senators. They hope to get it through the house in the next day or so, then to a House/Senate conference committee to work out a final bill.

Wonder of Words Fest This Fall in Downtown

A new WOW!, Wonder of Words Festival is coming to downtown Des Moines this fall. KCCI reports the event, a partnership between the Downtown Community Alliance and Des Moines Public Library is designed to bring writers, readers, and publishers together from Oct. 21 to the 26 in various locations in downtown. The festival will include children's music and theater, an internationally known author and other reading-related events.

DM Dad Wanted in Child Abuse Investigation

Des Moines Police want James Beaudrie. He's charged with assault, and multi counts of sexual abuse. The charges from accusations by his 15-year old daughter. The mother, Kijua Beaudrie's behind bars charged with neglect, and their 9-kids are in foster homes or shelters. Thurman Tornado Damages Large percentage of town

According to emergency officials, about three-fourths of the southwest Iowa town of Thurman was hit hard by a tornado, last night.
Fortunately, there were no injuries. Thurman is located about four miles east of Interstate 29 in Fremont County and has a population of about 250.
Emergency officials attribute the lack of injuries to the fact that The National Weather Service has been issuing warning about this since Thursday.
Officials had access to the town and directed residents to a Red Cross shelter set up at Fremont-Mills High School.
According to officials, in addition to the damage within city limits, a handful of tractor trailers were blown over on southbound I-29.
By 10 p.m., last night, emergency officials were stationed at Thurman City Hall, awaiting supplies from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, including a generator.

Tornado Damage Update

In Creston, Two Homes were destroyed in the tornadoes that touched down on Saturday, but, according to the Des Moines Register, as of 8:30 this morning, there were no reported fatalities or missing people.

• Damage was still being assessed at the Greater Regional Medical Center. According to officials, There is no word yet on how soon patients will return to the facility.

• Power has been restored to the area, according to MidAmerican and Alliant Energy companies.

Tornados, Flash Floods and Crushed Cars All Over Iowa

Last night, severe storms broke out across Iowa, with Creston being the hardest hit. According to Creston police, the greater regional medical center was hit and damaged by a tornado. As a result, the emergency room has been moved elsewhere in Creston. South West Community College also took a direct hit.
Power in Creston was almost completely out, last night, as Alliant Energy crews were busy working, in the area to restore power.
Here in Des Moines, a flash flood warning was in effect throughout Saturday night. Public Works crews were barricading streets too dangerous to drive on. Stalled cars were scattered throughout the area. A lot of the streets were under more than two feet of water.
The Sherman Hill Neighborhood was hit hard by high winds. Three different roads were blocked as a result of downed trees and many cars were completely smashed.

Get Ready for a Grand Avenue Detour This Summer

The bridge at Grand Avenue and 63rd St. will shut down for the whole summer. The bridge in such bad shape that if it isn't fixed, there would have to be a limit set on the weight of vehicles on it or even close to it.

Next month, construction starts on the 98-year-old Grand Avenue bridge over Walnut Creek just east of that intersection. It will close that part of Grand for several months.

According to City of Des Moines officials, recent bridge inspections show the bridge is structurally deficient and is near the end of its life. The $3.3 million project will remove the existing bridge, build a new one, and replace the sidewalks and parts of the trails, which means a detour for commuters and pedestrians.

Posted detours will instruct drivers to take 56th St. north to University or south to connect back to 63rd.

Construction should start in early May and last six months into November.

Suspect Busted for Papa John's Robbery

A 21-year old man's been charged by Des Moines Police with burglary for Sunday's alleged burglary at a Papa John’s in the 4500 block of SW 9th Street. Police say Jacob Bellman confessed to breaking in and taking an undisclosed amount of cash from the store safe. According to the Des Moines Register, Bellman told police he used a code to open the safe, but detectives aren't saying how he got the code.

Teen Busted for Shooting Up SW DM Home

Des Moines Police have charged 18-year old Hunter Dykstra with intimidation with a dangerous weapon for firing into a home in the 21000 block of Southwest First Street last November. One of the bullets hit a sleeping 13-year old girl. Investigators say Dykstra might not have been caught if he didn't brag about it on Facebook. He's in the Polk COunty Jail on $50,000 bond.

Shower Cam Man Facing More Charges

The Storm Lake man accused of hiding a camera in his bathroom and recording people showering faces more charges in the alleged video recording of a girl. KCCI reports 30-year old Shanon Pranschke's already facing 13-counts of invasion of privacy, and he was charged yesterday with filming the sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Forecasters Warn Possible Tornado Outbreak Tomorrow

The NWS Storm Prediction Center says there's a higher risk of severe weather tomorrow. The forecast shows western Iowa's under moderate to high risk, including a chance for strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds, as well as locally heavy rain. The threat's expected to be most severe tomorrow afternoon into early Sunday. They're calling it a "high-end life threatening event."

Frost May Have Cut Half the Grape Crop

The exceptionally early start to the grape season in march, thanks to higher than normal temperatures, has lost about half its' crop, thanks to the frost this week. An Iowa State University expert tells the Des Moines Register all is not lost, since the grape plants can make to close to 50% of the primary bud. Frost isn't unusual, but the well above average temps over the last month and a half was.

Whopping Couch Vaccinations Tonight in Des Moines

Des Moines health and school officials, and parents are concerned about the number of whooping cough cases. A Polk County Health Department spokesperson says there are 16-confirmed cases in the city's south side. Officials say it's been a big problem for students Lincoln High, Lincoln South and Weeks Middle Schools. There's a vaccination clinic tonight at Lincoln High until 8p.m.

Des Moines Getting Hoops Doubleheader

Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Drake will shoot hoops in a doubleheader in Des Moines over the next four years. The Hawkeyes will face UNI and the Cyclones will take on Drake at Wells Fargo Arena on Dec. 15. Iowa State and UNI square off in 2013, with Iowa facing Drake. The twin bill replaces the annual matchups that Iowa and Iowa State had with both UNI and Drake of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Webster County Man Gets 50-years for Sex Abuse

A Webster County man's going to be spending the next half century behind bars, sentenced today for 2 counts of second degree sexual abuse. KCCI reports 49-year old Gary Trueblood of Lehigh pleaded guilty in March for abusing a young girl from 2009 to 2011. He was arrested last September.

Verizon Adding New Phone Fee

Verizon Wireless says it's going to start charging $30 every time a subscriber wants to upgrade to a new phone. AT and T's already raised the fee for the same thing from $18 top $36. Verizon's new charge starts April 22nd. Cellphone company profits have been cut by the cost of subsidizing smartphones, especially iPhones, which KCCI reports usually cost hundreds more than their retail price.

Legislature at Odds Over Regents Budget

State lawmakers are having a problem with a new budget, and the big problem is how much to spend on public universities, and schools for the blind and deaf. KCCI reports the two sides are about $65-million apart. House republicans want to cut spending by $256-million, while the Democrats in the Senate want to raise spending $34-million.

Des Moines Police have collected stacks of phone money they say was used in a rather straightforward scam to steal from area stores. The Des Moines Register reports one suspect's been in custody in Dallas County since late last month for forgery. Police say the pair spent $850 in fake bills on clothes, then went to another Sears to return the clothing, and get real bills; then it was off to another register to exchange $300 in fake bills for $300 in real larger bills.

Okland Murder Reward

West Des Moines Police are hoping a new and larger reward will get someone to tell what they know about Ashley Okland's murder. Okland, a realtor, was killed in a model home last April. The reward for information's now $150,000, and Lt. Local Money Coming in for DART Bus Rapid Transit Service

A million in local money's been pledged so far for a rapid transit bus service in Des Moines, and they're hoping to record another $3.5-million can soon be raised. DART needs $25 million to bring rapid bus transit to Des Moines, but they need to raise $5-million in local funding to qualify for federal grant money.

Wind Energy Tax Credit Passes Senate

The Iowa Senate's passed and sent to the house a bill expanding the state's wind energy tax credit. The Des Moines Register reports the bill adds about 100 megawatts of newly developed wind energy eligible for a tax credit. The credit would be open to new projects coming on line between 2015 and 2019. Current incentives make Iowa the second-highest wind energy generator in the U.S.

Aston Kutcher Investing in Iowa Tech Fiirm

Iowa native and CBS-TV's "Two and a Half Men" star Ashton Kutcher was in Des Moines today to announce his investment in Dwolla, a technology company. Dwolla opened for business in 2008 and provides online and mobile payments. The company's been working on raising $5 million to continue its expansion in February.

New Abortion Bill In State House

There's debate over another abortion bill in the legislature. House GOP backers of cutting all public abortion funding don't think they'll succeed, but KCCI reports they want a debate and vote getting lawmakers on the record. Current law allows abortion funding when a doctor determines it's medically necessary and the woman doesn't have money or insurance.

Fruit Growers Worried About Tonight's Temps

Fruit growers are hoping to get through tonight and tomorrow night's cold snap with minimal crop losses. The National Weather Service expects temps to hit the 20's tonight,. especially north of U.S. 30. Areas South of Hwy 30 are expected to hit the 30's. The Des Moines Register reports fruit blossoms arrived about a month early this year, and growers have been worried about a freeze.

Branstad Pushes Democrats for Property Tax Overhaul

Gov. Branstad's turning up the heat on democrats in the State Senate to move on his overhaul of the state's property tax system. During his weekly news conference, Branstad says while he's had positive talks with legislators, there's still no deal. The Governor wants deep cuts ion business property taxes over 8 years. Democrats, who control the senate, want a plan that cuts property taxes on small businesses.

Pharmacy Burglars Went for the Drugs

Burglars knew exactly what they wanted when the broke into the Medicap Pharmacy in Adel early this morning. Owner Toni Sumpter tells KCCI they headed right for the prescription drugs. She says they didn't even touch the cash register. Investigators say they don't have a complete list yet of all the drugs that were taken, but they were in and out in under a minute.

Dalasta Trial Not Expected Until July

A 2nd trial delay, due to brain related surgery, in the case of Kevin Dalasta. His trial date's now in July. Dalasta's facing vehicular homicide and other charges in the 2010 deaths of 2-children in Ankeny. Police say Dalasta ran a stop sign in Ankeny and slammed into a minivan. The Des Moines Register reports the surgery's related to an epileptic condition. His defense says that condition may have been a factor in the car crash.

Polk County Crash Involving School Bus, Semi and Pick-Up

An associate teacher and a 16-year-old student were injured in a three-vehicle crash in Polk County.
According to the sheriff's office, just after 3 p.m. Friday, a Saydel school bus carrying three people stopped at the railroad tracks on northeast Broadway, when a semi-trailer truck struck it from behind. A Ford pickup then hit the semi.
The associate teacher and student, who were on the bus, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
According to Officials, the driver of the trailer truck, 37-year-old Irfan Dervisevic, was given a citation for failing to stop in a sure and clear distance. No other citations were issued.
The portion of NE Broadway from northeast Delaware to EFCO was closed until about 4:20 p.m.

Man Pleads Guilty To Breaking In to McDonald's...

21 year old Whitley Teslow, of Decorah, was seen, on security footage, breaking a drive-thru window at a closed McDonald's in Cedar Falls, climbing through the window and cooking up a meal, before climbing back out the window. Teslow has pleaded guilty to theft and criminal mischief charges.
Teslow surrendered a few days later after seeing media coverage of the crime.
Teslow told a judge he broke into the restaurant after he'd been drinking with friends.

More Charges For Clear Lake Man

More charges have been filed against a Alan Cannon, of Clear Lake, who was accused of trying to hire two people to kill a 16-year-old girl that accused Cannon of sexually assaulting her.
31 year old Alan Cannon, was charged, in March, with solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Yesterday, Prosecutors filed additional charges of attempted murder and a second count of solicitation.
Cannon also faces charges of third-degree sexual abuse and providing alcohol to a minor.
Cannon is currently in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $160,000 bond.

Ashley Oakland Memorial on Monday

It will be one year ago, tomorrow, that real estate agent Ashley Okland was shot and killed, while she was showing a townhome in West Des Moines and so far, her case still remains unsolved.
Realtors are gathering to hold a memorial service for her on Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. During the memorial, there will be a discussion about realtor safety and a safety course called A-OK, developed by Tim Meline, of Iowa Realty, in honor of Ashley Okland.
Thanks to Real estate agents and other private donors, the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Oakland's case is now $150,000, which is a Polk County Crime Stopper's record.
According to Police, the case is not cold and they are still following up on leads and hope to make an arrest one day. Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (515) 223-1400.

Waterloo Police Officer Shoots, Kills Pitbull During Attack

56 year old Phil Henderson of Waterloo, was walking in the 300 block of Western Avenue, just south of downtown, on Wednesday evening, when he saw an unleashed pit bull on a sidewalk across 4th Street West.

Henderson led Phoenix away, but turned around to see the pit bull charging at full speed right at them.

According to Henderson, “(The pitbull) grabbed on to the neck of his dog and dragged him down,”

Waterloo Police Officer Ed Savage was driving by and saw the attack, stopped and got out to help.

According to Henderson, the officer fired his Taser at the pit bull, which did not work and neither did a container of pepper spray or hitting the pit bull with a baton. The the pit bull would not let got of Phoenix.

Officer Savage then communicated back to Waterloo Police, requesting permission to shoot the dog. After securing permission, Savage shot the pit bull once, in the back. The pit bull let go of Phoenix before stepping away and collapsing. The dog died soon after.

Henderson's dog Phoenix had to undergo surgery at a local pet hospital, but is recovering.

Stolen TV Tower Equipment Recovered

$500,000 worth of equipment stolen in a break-in at KIMT-TV's tower site, in Mason City, has been recovered by authorities.
The burglary took place, earlier this year, at the station's tower near St. Ansgar in Mitchell County. KIMT reported in February that copper and other equipment had disappeared from the site.
The Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and the Mower County sheriff's office in Minnesota searched two homes in southern Minnesota on Thursday and , according to Mitchell County Sheriff Curt Younker, the items stolen from KIMT were recovered. Two people were taken into custody by Minnesota officials.
The investigation is still underway and charges are pending.

Chemical Release Causes Partial Evacuation

Yesterday afternoon, in Saint Lucas, authorities contained two anhydrous ammonia tanks that broke loose from the truck that was towing them. The tanks overturned around 11:30 a.m. in a downtown parking lot and a valve broke, releasing the fertilizer.
No one was hurt and about 40 people were temporarily evacuated.

Corrections Department's Missing an Inmate

One of the inmates in the Fort Des Moines Work Release program is missing. The state corrections department says 24-year old Joshua Gibbs was on a furlough to look for work, but didn't come back yesterday. he was serving 15-years for theft and assault during a felony. Gibbs is white, 6'4", 200 pounds, blond hair and blue eyes. If you've seen him, call Des Moines Police or the Polk County Sheriff.

Silver Carp Caught in Northern Iowa Lakes

A commercial fishing company caught dozes of Silver Carp in East Okoboji Lake and one in Spirit Lake in the last month and a half, but state DNR says there probably won't be a lot more of them since they prefer to spawn in large rivers. KCCI reports last years Missouri River flooding allowed the fish to get past barriers. According to KCCI, Silver carp, which can hit 50 pounds, leap out of the water and they've hurt boaters.

David Flores Trial Now Set For October

David Flores second trial will now start in October. Attorney's for both sides agreed to the change today. Flores, who's free on bond, was convicted in 1997 for the murder of Phyllis Davis in a shootout, but won a new trial 3-years ago based on new evidence. Both sides have agreed to hold off on a hearing for a prosecution request for a gag order in the case.

Alligator Removed from Des Moines Home

You don't see this in Des Moines every day-a 2-foot long alligator impounded yesterday by the Animal Rescue League and city police. The Des Moines Register reports someone notified authorities that the gator was in a home, along with an infant and a dog, in the 3300 block of Bowdoin Street. The alligator was in a tank in the living room. Colby Ryan, cited for possession of the animal, had nothing to say about where it came from

Teens Charged After WDM Home Turned Into Party Pad

West Des Moines Police have charged two Windsor Heights teens with burglary, after they turned a friends home into a party house for two days, leaving behind about $10,000 in damage. Peter and Jenifer Eastman had taken their family to Florida for vacation. KCRG reports officers think the teens got the access code for the garage from the Eastman's teenage son.

Commuters Asked to Avoid SE Delaware at Magazine Road

The City of Ankney's asking everyone to avoid Southeast Delaware at Magazine Road. Authorities say there's a nontoxic chemical spill crews are working to clean up. They want to make sure none of it gets into the storm water system. Southbound traffic is being detoured to SE 9th Street and northbound traffic to SE Kensington. The area's expected to reopen later this evening.

Interim Supt. WIll Run DM Schools Next year

Des Moines School Board's decided an interim Superintendent will run the district next year, giving them a wider selection of candidates to replace the Nancy Sebring, who's becoming Omaha's School Superintendent. The Des Moines Register reports board members Teree Caldwell-Johnson and Dick Murphy will work with Sebring on a transition plan, as well as her suggestions on an interim superintendent.

EPA Says Yes to E15

EPA's given a green light to using E15 as a registered fuel. This is a big win for Iowa corn growers, who've wanted to expand the ethanol market and boost their sales. Don't expect to see E15 at your gas station right away. Retailers have to file new paperwork to sell it to consumers.

Another House Fired on in Des Moines

Des Moines Police say someone fired several shots into a home in the 3000 block of Bowdoin St last night. Investigators say one three bullets that hit house flew through a window just over the head of a 14-year old girl. A witness says they say a man riding a bike leaving. The case remains under investigation.

West Des Moines Police say they hope a $150,000 reward will get someone to come forward and tell what they know about last April's murder of Ashley Okland. A police spokesperson tells KCCI the investigation's ongoing, with over 700-leads tracked so far. More information's expected to be released this week. Ramona Cunningham's Daughter Now Involved in Restitution Battle

Federal prosecutors are going after the daughter of the former head of the state's job training agency to collect some of the $1.6-million Ramona Cunningham owes in restitution. KCCI reports garnishment papers have been filed against Cunningham's daughter Kelly Ayers, ordering her to hand over, within 10-days, written notice of any property she has that belongs to her mother.

Legislature Sends Guv New Bill to Fund Flood Mitigation

The Iowa Legislature's passed and sent to the Governor a new program to fund flood-mitigation. The Des Moines Register reports, a community could get up to $15 million in state sales taxes generated on new development in that community to use for flood-mitigation projects like the levees, better drainage and river dredging. Communities would have to match the cash coming from the state, and in almost all cases federal money would also be available.

Three DM Homes Hit By Gunfire Monday Night

Des Moines Police say three homes were hit by gunfire around 10 last night. A resident of one of the homes was cut by flying glass, but no other injuries were reported. Police say this happened in the 1300 block of Clark Street. KCCI reports a group of 10 to 15-teens was outside at the time, and the gunfire started when someone drove up in an SUV and opened fire on them, they fired back.

Veterans Parade in Des Moines in June

Iowa's planning a parade to honor the veterans who served in the Iraq war as well as those of past conflicts. The effort's being led, at Gov. Branstad's request, by retired Iowa National Guard Col. Robert King. A spokesperson for the Governor says the parade's June 30th in Des Moines. More details are expected to come later this month.

Southwest Starts Flying Out of DM September 30th

September 30th. That's the date Southwest Airlines will start flying out of Des Moines to Chicago's Midway Airport. The Chicago-Des Moines flights, one way, are expected to start about $92. Southwest in January unveiled plans to convert AirTran Airways operations here and at 21-other U.S. and international airports.

This Could Be a Very Big Road Work Season

Spending on construction to match the 2009 record of $600-million, even it lawmakers haven't moved ahead with raising the gasoline tax to raise more road money. The Des Moines Register reports some of the major projects in the area include widening I-35 from three to six lanes in West Des Moines, rebuilding the I-80/U.S. 65 interchange in Altoona, and finishing the Ankeny interchange on I-35 at N.E. 36th Avenue.

BVranstad Wants Congress to Find Who Smeared Finely Textured Beef

Gov. Branstad plans to ask Congress for an investigation into who started the smear campaign over finely textured beef-also called 'pink slime.' The Governor says he's talking to Cong. Steve King and other members of Iowa's delegation to identify the people or group rersponsible. Branstad says if they can get away with this, what food product's next?

Sebring Offered Omaha Superintendent's Job

Omaha's Board of Education voted this morning to offer its' Superintendent's job to Des Moines Schools Superintendent Nancy Sebring. Sebring hasn't said anything yet or accepted the Omaha job. KCCI reports Des Moines school board's issued a statement thanking Sebring for her work, and saying they are turning their focus to the process of selecting a new superintendent here.

14 bills are up for debate, including House File 2450, which would "prohibit the use of automated traffic law enforcement systems."

Sexual Assault...

Iowa City police arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman who was showing him an apartment.
21 year old Peng Tang, was arrested Friday night on suspicion of kidnapping and sexual assault.
According to police, the woman was showing Tang her apartment Thursday night for a possible sublet.
Tang attacked the woman, telling her he had a knife. Tang took sexually explicit photos of the woman and threatened to post them online if she contacted police.

Burlington Man Charged With Fire...

A Burlington man has been found guilty of setting a fire that detroyed a local church.
On Friday, 43-year-old Victor Clegg Jr. was found guilty of second-degree arson for setting fire to Union Baptist Church last April.
Clegg had also been charged with burglary in the case, but, instead, the jury found him guilty of trespassing.
Clegg, was also convicted of arson in 2009 for setting a Michigan restaurant on fire. Clegg's sentencing date is scheduled for May 14.
He has been held in the county jail since his arrest last April.
