Interim Superintendent to have Morality Clause

Morality clauses are not common in school employees contracts, but one is being considered now in the contract of interim Des Moines schools superintendent Tom Ahart.

Former school superintendent Nancy Sebring embarassed the district when she used her school email account to send and receive sexually explicit messages. Ahart's contract, which includes a clause banning immoral behavior, is scheduled for board approval June 19.

Whistle Blower Judgment

A judge has ordered Iowa State University to pay nearly $1.3 million to a former employee who reported financial misconduct by his boss, saying evidence showed a unified effort to tarnish his reputation and have him removed from his job in retaliation for whistle-blowing.
The effort began after Dennis Smith, who worked in the College of Engineering marketing department, told then-Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy in 2007 about mismanagement, abuse of authority and financial misconduct by Pamela Reinig, director of the marketing department.
Reinig pleaded guilty to first-degree theft in 2009 and was placed on probation for stealing over $10,000 from the school.
In the years following his whistle-blowing, Smith's duties were reduced, the funding for his pay was changed and he was ultimately fired following a reorganization of the marketing department unit in 2010.
Geoff Greenwood, spokesman for the attorney general's office, said the university intends to appeal the decision.

100 Year Old Murder

The 100th anniversary of Iowa's worst mass killing will be commemorated with lectures, films and a chance to see the ax used in the grisly crime.
But most events will be in Red Oak, 25 miles from where the crime occurred in Villisca. In part that's because the county history center in Red Oak has better meeting space, but some say it's also because after a century, Villisca residents are tired of talking about the case.
As former mayor Susie Enarson puts it, "I would like it to be over."
But many people will still head for Villisca, where they can tour the house where two adults, their four children and two of the children's friends were hacked to death while they slept. Their bodies were found June 10, 1912.
