Fire trucks have been racing out of Des Moines fire station No.1 at 9th and Mullberry streets since the Great Depression. Now, the city has finally put together a plan to build a new one.Plans show a new building that's more than a fire station. The 54-thousand-square- foot building will hold a new training area, maintenance and shop facilities, administration offices and the city's new emergency operations center, on a site a few blocks from the fair grounds. They'll break ground in a couple of months and open next year.
