Iowa Child Advocates Benefit From Penn State Sandusky Woes

Child protection and advocacy services is Iowa will share over $188,000 as the result of the sexual abuse scandal involving former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. The money's the first of 4-payments Big Ten universities will make. The money is Penn State’s share of the previous year’s Big Ten Conference bowl revenues,.

Arrest in Des Moines Pharmacy Robbery

Des Moines Police have made an arrest in last week's robbery at Richards Pharmacy. Police have arrested 17-year old Dut Makuet who's in the Polk County Jail KCCI reports investigators say they were called to a dispute Sunday and found about 1300 prescription pills similar to those taken from the pharmacy, as well as clothing worn and a hammer by the suspect.

Johnny Orr Dies

Former ISU basketball coach Johnny Orr is dead. Orr, who was 86 passed away today in a Des Moines hospital. KCCI reports a tribute's planned for him during tonight's game. Orr was with ISU from 1980 until 1994,. and had a school record of 218 wins and 200 losses. For his career, he was 466-346 during stints in Massachusetts, Michigan and Iowa State.

Infant Who Fell From Babysitter's Car Remarkably Uninjured

In the case of the 1 year-old boy who fell out of a moving car driven by his babysitter on Highway 141 west of Perry, the miracle is the child is relatively uninjured, with the exception of a fractured bone near his eye. Police believe the boy grabbed the door handle during a turn and the door opened and he tumbled out. The babysitter was unaware. She showed up distraught at the hospital where a good Samaritan had brought the child.

Best Des Moines Christmas Story of 2013

An amazing story of selfless charity is being told and retold. A man named Jonnie Wright went out Christmas Eve in the cold wearing a hooded sweatshirt and standing at intersections with a cardboard sign with the words, Please Help. He collected in Polk County before a cop told him it was illegal and then he went to Ames to finish his collecting. To each person who stopped to give him something, whether money or gloves or food, he gave them an envelope. Inside was either a 10 dollar or a 100 dollar bill and a letter explaining that all donations would be given to the Bethel Mission in Des Moines, a homeless shelter, and that the money they received could be spent any way they wished in gratitude for their generosity. He gave away 950 dollars and collected 363, and he donated that and a thousand more to the homeless shelter.

50 Degree Temp Drop is Rare

Des Moine natives are used to extreme winter conditions, but the weekend delivered an unusual event when the temperature dropped from Saturday to Sunday more than 50 degrees. The last time there was such an extreme temperature change was in 2008 when it dropped 54 degrees when a cold front moved through.

Porterhouse the Bulldog Dies

Drake University's beloved mascot Porterhouse the bulldog has died. Porterhouse died from congestive heart failure at the age of 8 and a half.

Des Moines Citizens Love Des Moines

People living in Des Moines love their city. A new survey by the Greater Des Moines Partnership asked three-thousand residents if they feel connected to their community. 92-percent of those surveyed say they're living healthy and productive lives. Eighty-eight-percent of respondents say they are proud of Des Moines, while 90 percent say they feel safe. The partnership is conducting another survey next summer.

Info on Iowa Doc Who Phonied AIDS research

We're learning more about an Iowa State University assistant professor who was forced out of his job in October after faking the results of an AIDS vaccine. The biomedical sciences expert resigned after admitting he spiked rabbit blood to falsely show the vaccine was working in research animals. James Bradac of the National Institutes of Health says human blood components were apparently added to the rabbit blood to skew the results of experiments. Bradac says the phony results helped an ISU research team gain millions of dollars in federal money.

A Call for Iowa and Illinois to Partner to Pitch Boeing Plant

A huge economic prize is the new jetliner plant Boeing is planning and which locations around the nation are pitching hard. Now The Bi-State Regional Commission is urging the governors of Iowa and Illinois to band together to convince Boeing to build its new Boeing 777x plant in the Quad Cities. They figure both states together can make Boeing an offer that can beat what a single state can afford. That's according to the "Moline Dispatch." Several other states are already in competition to be the home of the new plant.

IA appealing disaster decision

The state has appealed the denial of federal disaster aid to several rural electrical cooperatives.

This follows FEMA's refusal to help four cooperatives whose utility lines the spring ice storm damaged.

Woman killed in Christmas Eve shooting ID'ed

Des Moines police have identified a woman who died in a Christmas Eve shooting.

Police say they found 34-year-old Johnita Clemons in a home on Francis Avenue. Someone had reported gunshots in the area.

Police say they have questioned four witnesses, but they not released any additional information.

Pull-tab lottery sales drop again

Another drop in sales of pull-tab tickets has Iowa Lottery officials mulling options.

The Des Moines Register reports the lottery telling the legislature that pull-tab sales have dropped seven percent in the last year.

Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer callss the sales drop the fifth consecutive one. She says changes may include creating a new product, discontinuing games, or upgrading them.

Scratch games have grown seven percent in the last year.

Des Moines couple's presents stolen

Someone stole presents from a Des Moines couple on Christmas Eve.

The Des Moines Register reports someone broke open their front door on High Street with a pry bar.

It happened with the couple out at a family gathering.

Police say an iPad, a laptop, a gaming system, an electric guitar, family heirlooms and 600 dollars in Christmas presents disappeared.

No one has made any arrests.

Blood Donation Collection Sites

The Red Cross and Hudson Valley Blood Services say blood donations are needed and here are some collection locations where blood can be donated over the next few days. Today at ST Kateri Church on convent Avenue in Wappingers Falls from 2:30 to 8:30. Tomorrow at First United Presbyterian Church on Route 199 in Pine Plains from 2 to 7. Saturday at Adams Fairacre Farms on Old Post Road in Wappingers Falls, 11 to 5.

Caught Driving Drunk for Second Time

State police say a Hopewell Junction man with a prior drunk driving conviction was stopped driving with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit over the weekend. 27 year-old Michael Ogden was stopped hear Fishkill Bowl on Route 82 at 2 in the morning Sunday. He faces a felony charge because of the prior DUI within 10 years.

Poughkeepsie Budget Set for 2014

The City of Poughkeepsie has been finalized, and despite the mayor's proposal to increase trash pickup user fees, council elected to keep them at their current rates. Council projects added revenue of 1.3 million dollars from the newly installed parking meters.

Bank Holdup Suspect Barricades, Takes Own Life

A man police were looking to arrest for a bank robbery killed himself in a standoff at his house in Perry Friday night. Police spotted a car wanted in the holdup at the Raccoon Valley Bank in Minburn earlier in the day, and surrounded the house where the car was parked. A negotiator spoke with the suspect inside for hours, and then the suspect, 25 year-old Caleb Anderson , stopped answering his phone. When police finally went inside they found that he had killed himself.

4 Questioned in Des Moines Woman's Homicide

Four people taken into custody after a fatal shooting at a Des Moines home Christmas Eve were being questioned by police. 9:30pm Christmas Eve police got a call of shots fired on Francis Avenue and they found a woman shot dead inside. She is identified as 34 year-old Johnita Clemons. She was the mother of a son and daughter and family members say she got engaged last January. Police had been called to that same address 5 times on domestic dispute calls.

WDM Restaurant Cloising, Owner Blames Extended Grand Ave Bridge Shutdown

The reopening of the Grand Avenue Bridge's come too late to save West Des Moines Taqueria Sonora restaurant. Owner Hector Otanez tells KCCI he's closing his doors for good. He says the 9-month shutdown of the bridge cost him 40% of his business, and now 3-months behind on his rent, he can't afford stay open.

Woman Shot to Death in Des Moines Home

Des Moines Police say a woman was found shot to death last night in a home in the 1800 block of Francis Avenue. KCCI reports four witnesses were taken from the scene to police headquarters to be questioned by detectives. The victim's believed to have been in her 30's, and investigators will release her name after her family's been notified.

Deadline coming for health insurance enrollment

Iowans continue buying health insurance from a federal website before a looming coverage deadline.

Federal officials moved that deadline from yesterday through to today. Coverage would begin Jan. 1.

Iowa and 35 other states use this enrollement website.

DM city council supports saving bridge

Des Moines' city council has joined the fight to raise money to save a downtown bridge.

The council has voted to give $750,000 to repairs on the Southwest Fifth Street bridge. Officials believe it would take that amount to remove the bridge.

The bridge needs repairs that run anywhere from $1.75 million to $3.75 million.

The 1898 bridge spans the Raccoon River. Pedestrians and bicyclists have used it recently as part of the trail system along the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers.

An engineering report showing deterioration and safety concerns closed the bridge in March. Since then, people have circulated petitions and asked city leaders to save it.

Grassley gearing up for 99-county quest -- again

Why change now?

Charles Grassley plans on holding at least one meeting in each of Iowa's 99 counties next year.

The senator has done this annually for three decades.

Grassley begins his statewide tour a week from Friday in the northeastern part of the state. He makes stops in Nashua and Charles City.

Grassley has met with residents in all the state's counties each year since his election to the Senate in 1980. He calls representative government a two-way street that draws strength from discussions between officials and the people they represent.

DM man trades gunfire with invader

No one has made any arrests following an exchange of gunfire between a man and the person who broke into his home.

The Des Moines Register says it happened on Sunday morning on County Line Road.

The 56-year-old man says crashing sounds inside his trailer disrupted his sleeping. He claims he grabbed a shotgun he keeps near his bed and walked towawrds his living room.

The man tells police he saw someone standing there and challenged him. That person fired three or four handgun shots. The man blasted his shotgun once.

The intruder escaped through a door. No one reports any injuries.

Pizza Parlor Punching Perplexes Police

Des Moines police are investigating a fight at the Big Tomato Pizza restaurant early Saturday morning and the fighters are telling very different stories. Two men say a Big Tomato server refused to serve one of them because he is gay and called him a name and punched both patrons. But the server says the fight started because the gay man was drunk and refused to leave. The server, Matthew Donner was charged with refusing to provide his name to officers and it may be hard to come up with additional charges because it comes down to he said versus he said.

Pet Adoption Limits Worry Animal Rescuers

In Pleasant Hill, there's a new law limiting pet ownership to four dogs or cats or any mix of dogs and cats up to four total. That's to end pet hoarding which has become a growing problem. Worrying about the law is the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, which says there are plenty of pets to adopt and limits keep people from adopting.

Cold-Snow Top News

Des Moines Public Works trucks were out in force all weekend to try to keep up with snow. A snowstorm arrived on the first day of winter, and the Public Works plows are responsible for 225 miles of snow routes. Yesterday they dealt with blowing and drifting snow. After they did the snow routes they went into the neighborhood streets and hope owners move cars off the streets so the plows can do their work without burying cars. Brutally cold today with wind chills in some spots close to 20 below. Christmas Eve a chance of light flurries. Christmas Day it will warm up to near 30.

Iowa Incomes Not Keeping Up

Incomes in Iowa are not keeping up with inflation. That's according to newly released Census Bureau data. The new figures show median incomes in Iowa homes have dropped below inflation over the last dozen years.

Winter Trout Release

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will release trout all around the state this winter for winter fishermen. These trout couldn't survive in these selected lakes in summertime and are strictly for catching by seasonal anglers. Some of the 11 thousand trout will be released in Fort Dodge's Moorland Park and Big Lake West in Council Bluffs, in Blue Pit in Mason City and Bacon Creek in Sioux City. Also Lake Petoka in Bondurant and Ada Hayden Pond in Ames. Fisherman must have paid their trout fee.

Chinese Nationals Allegedly Involved in Corn Espionage

The U.S. Attorney for Iowa's Southern District says one man's been arrested and they're looking for 5-other Chinese nationals they say conspired to steal trade secrets from seed corn companies Dupont Pioneer and Monsanto. WHO-TV reports the suspect in custody, Mo Hailong, allegedly stole plants from test plots and tried to get the corn to China.

Schulte Group Buys Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel

Schulte Hospitality Group is the new owner of the Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel in downtown Des Moines. A company spokesperson tells KCCI they plan a major renovation of the hotel. That's expected to cost about $8 million and take about 6-months to finish, including adding a restaurant on the first floor.

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has brought to light those technical problems as it tries luring away some potential customers.

New television ads from Wellmark in Iowa and South Dakota tell people that they can buy health insurance from other sources.

ARL takes birds from shootout suspect's home

Exotic birds and other animals have left the home of the suspect who died following Wednesday's shootout in Des Moines.

Josh Colvin from the ARL tells the Des Moines Register that 55 birds, four cats, and a ball python appear healthy.

The birds remain under care at the ARL's largest location in Ankeny.

Officials have not called this a hoarding situation.

Payton announces candidacy for Sen. Dist. 15

The former chairman of the Jasper County Republican Central Committee has announced a state senate run.

The Des Moines Register reports Patrick Payton of Newton seeking the District 15 seat.

This district includes Altoona, Bondurant, Elkhart and Mitchellville.

Rich Nigerian cousin scam trips up attorney

The Iowa Supreme Court has suspended the law license of a Des Moines attorney for one year.

The court has sanctioned Robert Allan Wright, Jr. for soliciting loans to pay a fake Nigerian inheritance.

KCCI-TV reports Wright received documents two years ago saying a client had inhereted $19 million from a long-lost cousin. The client told Wright he had to pay $177,00 in taxes to get the bigger sum of money. The Supreme Court says Wright agreed to represent client for a fee of 10 percent of the inheritance.

Court documents say Wright solicited loans from other former clients to help pay the supposed taxes. Several of them offered $12,500 apiece. Another person gave $20,000.

The Supreme Court claims Wright did not reveal the risky nature of the transaction. He eventually raised $200,000 and sent it to Nigeria, but no one ever delivered an inheritance.

None of the people who loaned their money to Wright ever got their money back.

FBI raids Sorenson's home

The FBI continues investigating a former Michele Bachmann campaign aide.

The lawyer for former Iowa State Senator Kent Sorenson has confirmed to the Des Moines Register that authorities searched Sorenson's home two weeks ago.

Sorenson helped with Bachmann's run for the White House last year.

Federal agents seized computers and other items linked to Sorenson's work with both Bachmann and Ron Paul's campaigns.

Sorenson switched from Bachmann's camp to Paul's right before the Iowa caucuses. Authorities say they have evidence he received money to do so.

One of the Democrats who wants his party's nomination for Governor made some news on the marital front today. WHO TV reports State Rep. Tyler Olson told reporters today he and his wife are separating, and will be getting divorced. Olson says hes cutting back campaigning for the rest of the year but will resume after the holidays.

DM PD Arrest Rock Eating Man for Drug Paraphernalia

Des Moines Police pulled over a man some Lincoln High School students say they saw eating rocks. Police say the man told the kids he lost his meth. 36-year old Michael Sutton was in a car with two kids in the back seat. KCCI reports Sutton's been arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, child endangerment and minor traffic charges.

Ankeny laundromat burglary

The Ankeny Police Department is looking to the public for help in identifying two suspects involved in a burglary of an Ankeny laundromat overnight.

On 11/27/13 at approximately 5:54 a.m. Ankeny officers responded to The Laundry Place located at 308 S. Ankeny Blvd. after a customer reported seeing damaged security cameras and an open door into the office. Upon arrival to the scene officers found all the security cameras had been forcefully removed from the ceiling and damage to the door into an office area. Officers found the office area to have been ransacked. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the office and approximately $3,000.00 worth of damage was done to the interior of the business.

The security cameras were able to record two suspects in the business before they were disabled. The cameras show a Caucasian male suspect in his mid to late 20's wearing a brown colored coat with a hood and denim jeans and another Caucasian male with no description enter the business at approximately 1:15 a.m. Once inside the business the suspects immediately started to disable the security cameras. After the cameras were disabled the suspects entered the office where the money was stolen.

Veterans hospital employed sex offender

A Des Moines veterans hospital apparently employed a registered sex offender for three years.

The Des Moines Register reports 46-year-old Stanley McGinty of Knoxville has two convictions for lascivious acts with a child as far back as 2007.

McGinty applied for a job three years ago at the hospital in Des Moines that VA Central Iowa Health Care System operates. He mentioned his convictions on his job application, along with his two decades of National Guard service.

The hospital hired McGinty as a housekeeping aide. It fired him in September when administrators learned that sex offenders could not work at care facilities for dependent adults.

Proposal at Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees Christmas tree lights display was a beautiful background for a marriage proposal the night before Thanksgiving. Joshua Mogle knew his fiancé Barbie Morris's favorite time of year is Christmas, and so he took Barbie to a tree with a Barbie decoration theme where he had hung an ornament that said---Barbie, will you marry me? When she read it and turned around, he was on one knee. She said yes.

Iowa Banks Farm-Friendly

In a report by the American Bankers Association, it turns out that Iowa banks make up 15% of the 100 banks that give the most loans to farmers. United Bank of Iowa is number 15 on the list and it gave more than a million loans and 75% of those were to farmers.

Chuck's Feeds the Needy

The level of need in Des Moines was illustrated by the speed at which Chuck's restaurant, which has been cooking up free meals for their needy neighbors for nearly 30 years, had to cut off meal requests when they reached their limit of 3 thousand and 69. Chuck's continued its turkey tradition despite the death of the owner of the restaurant who passed away from cancer earlier this month.

Retailers Battle Amazon

The stores have been filled in Des Moines from last night through today, but retailers are fighting to keep shoppers from using their stores to try on or scope out gifts and then go home and order them on Amazon.com. Amazon is competing head to head with brick and mortar stores even before Cyber Monday by giving shoppers the option of picking up items at physical locations or adding Sunday delivery.

Accused Iowa Killer Too Sick for Extradition?

This week former University of Iowa Researcher John Bloomfield was officially charged with killing his wife in 1997, after investigators plugged away at the case for 16 years. But now his lawyer says Bloomfield's health is poor and he has suffered serious illnesses. It is not known how his health might affect extradition to Iowa from Minnesota, where he was arrested.

Unskilled Iowans an Obstacle to Business Expansion

A state survey shows that the top reason businesses have for deciding not to expand in Iowa is the lack of qualified workers. 673 Iowa companies have plans to expand representing perhaps 7 thousand new jobs, but more than 384 of these companies say they are experiencing recruitment problems while 311 say they don't have room to expand. Most Iowa workers are categorized as middle skilled, meaning an education level between high school and an associates degree, while only 33% of jobs go to middle skilled workers.

Man accused of trying to run over another man in Des Moines

Police yesterday arrested a Des Moines man for trying to run over someone with his car.

The Des Moines Register reports police taking 46-year-old Simon Alatorre into custody outside Beer Can Alley on Court Avenue.

The manager apparently asked Alatorre and another man to leave when they started arguing.

Witnesses say Alatorre drove his car toward them and hit a fire hydrant. He allegedy backed up and tried hitting them again, but this time he hit a utility box.

DNR: Expect good wild turkey harvest

People have had lots of turkey today, but also expect the bird to remain plentiful in the wild this year.

DNR officials tell KCRG television that they expect a bumper crop for turkey season.

They say this has resulted from strong hatching conditions two years ago, which has led to lots of mature birds for the taking.

NASCAR buys Iowa Speedway

NASCAR has bought Iowa Speedway in Newton.

This transaction makes NASCAR the speedway's third owner in seven years.

Officials say the upcoming summer race schedule has already taken shape, but big changes may come year after next.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Store Hours

Here are some of the store hours for Thanksgiving. Stores at the Merle Hay Mall will open at 8 Thanksgiving night and stay open till 10pm Black Friday. Pretty much the same at Jordan Creek Town Center. 8 Thanksgiving till 10 Black Friday. The Valley West Mall in West Des Moines will open at 8 Thanksgiving and will close at 9 at night on Black Friday. At Southridge Mall some stories will actually open at 6 Thanksgiving evening.

Other stores hours. Toys R Us opens at 8pm Thanksgiving and continues till 10 Friday night. Walmart will be open 24 hours except for the West Des Moines store which opens at 6pm Thursday and remains open 24 hours through the holidays. Best Buys open 6pm Thursday to 10pm Friday. JC Penney's opens at 8 Thanksgiving. So does Sears, which will stay open through 10 Friday. Same thing at Kohl's.

Water Works Budget Apoproved, Rates Will Climb

Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees have approved a 2014 budget, and it will mean higher rates for customers. WHO-TV reports the budget's $61-million, with $35-million for operations. A 5% rate hike's already been approved for direct customers. Retail customers can expect a hike, and communities that buy water will see a 4% hike effective in April 2014.

Clerk Refuses to Give West Des Moines Robber Money

West Des Moines Police are investigating a robbery just after noon today at Scott's Shop on 5th Street. Detectives say the store clerk refused to give the man they're looking for any money, even after the suspect pulled a handgun. The suspects a black man in a black or gray stocking cap and sunglasses.\

NASCAR New Iowa Speedway Owners

NASCAR's the new owner of the Iowa Speedway, through a new subsidiary, Iowa Speedway, LLC. NASCAR says it will draw on all of its resources to continue the tracks development. NASCAR's hosting an event December 12th to outline more details on the purchase and their plans for the track going forward.

Church Robbed of 5 Thousand Dollar Keyboard

A Grinch has stolen the music from a Des Moines church this holiday season. Someone burglarized the Calvary Apostolic Church on Easton Boulevard Sunday night into Monday afternoon and stole the church's Yamaha keyboard. Value 5 thousand dollars.

Lyric Cook Mother Arrested for Drugs

You will recall last year when young Lyric Cook and her cousin Elizabeth Collins vanished while riding bikes in Evansdale and their bodies were found in a wooded area near Waterloo last December. Now Lyric Cooks mother Misty, who is 36, has been arrested on felony drug charges for possessing marijuana with intent to sell and possession of meth. She could face 50 years. Two months ago Lyric Cooks father Todd Morrisey was sentenced to up to 90 years on drug charges.

Meanwhile, the Iowa Department of Investigations says the murders of the two missing cousins Lyric and Elizabeth is not a cold case and investigators are still at work solving it.

Serial Stickup Suspect Arrested

Des Moines police say they have in custody the man who robbed 5 convenience stories in the past two weeks. 22 year-old Denzell Bullock is charged with robbing Star Liquor on East 14th, Valero on East Euclid, Kum and Go on Guthrie, Sahota Foods and Liquor on Southeast 14th and Star Service on Ingersoll. He was armed with a handgun during all of them and pistol whipped a clerk in one robbery, causing police to worry he was becoming more aggressive and violent. Acting on tips they spotted his car and chased him down. They recovered the gun.

Police Arrest Suspect in DM Armed Robberies

Des Moines PD say they've arrested a suspect they believes involved in five armed robberies in the metro this month. 22-year old Denzell Bullock of Des Moines is charged with five counts of first degree robbery. He's thought to have been involved in the hold ups at STAR Liquor, the Valero, Kum and Go, Sahota Foods and Liquor, and Star Service.

Statae Board Approves Pleasant Hill Voluntary Annexation

The state’s City Development Board's approved the voluntary annexation of 153 acres into Pleasant Hill, despite objections from residents opposed to a warehouse development proposed for part of the land. The Des Moines Register reports opponents of the warehouse plan say this will probably mean a new lawsuit.

Newton City Council Approves Iowa Speedway Deal

Big changes are coming to the Iowa Speedway. Newton's City Council approved lease and finance deals for the new owners, Iowa Speedway, LLC. The council didn't reveal who's behind the company. Rusty Wallace, who designed the track and is part owner, isn't talking about what's to come, but tells KCCI we should know more tomorrow, and a much bigger announcement's due December 12th.

Mother of Murdered Evansdale Girl Busted on Drug Charges

Hen and Tom Turkey Get Executive Clemency

Governor Brandstad, in an official pronouncement at his Des Moines home at Terrace Hill, declared he was invoking clemency and pardoning two turkeys by the names of Carmel and Apple, ahead of Thanksgiving. Carmel is a hen and Apple is a Tom and weigh a combined 67 pounds. Said the governor, “ I do hereby proclaim Carmel the Turkey and Apple the Turkey free from the harm of carving knifes and gravy This Thanksgiving Day,” close quote.

One Local Farmer Grows Turkeys Too Big for the Oven

Iowa ranks ninth in the nation when it comes to turkey production. But one area farmer says you won't find one of his turkeys on you Thanksgiving table this year. Steve Burrows tells KWWL-TV the birds he breeds average about 40 pounds, while most consumers buy turkeys in the 16-pound range. As a result, Burrows says he doesn't see an uptick in business around Thanksgiving.

Grand Ave Bridge Reopening Pushed Back to Mid-December

There's been another change in the opening of the new Grand Avenue bridge at 63rd Street in Des Moines. A Des Moines engineer says the bridge won't reopen now until mid-December. The bridge was shut down in March so it could be torn down and replaced. WHO-TV reports the most recent delay's being blamed on extreme cold.

Big Grant for ISU Jump Starts Stadium Project

Iowa State University's Athletic Director Jamie Pollard says the University's gotten a $25 million gift from Roy and Bobbi Reiman to jump-start a project to change the south end of Jack Trice Stadium and create a new entrance to the campus and Reiman Gardens. KCCI reports the project must still be approved by the State Board of Regents.

Iowa Speedway Sale in the Works

The owners of the Iowa Speedway are planning to sell the track and assets to a new corporation. The Newton's City Council has a special meeting tomorrow to discuss the sale to Iowa Speedway LLC. Branstad Leads Protest of EPA Ethanol Cut in Gas Proposal

The EPA's proposal to lower the amount of ethanol in gasoline led to a gathering of GOP politicians who are crying foul. KCCI reports Gov. Branstad's gone so far as to call it a war on corn that threatens thousands of jobs. Des Moines woman whose car went into lake drowned

Authorities say a Des Moines woman drowned after her car plunged into a lake following a police chase.

Polk County officials say it make take weeks to determine whether or not drugs or alcohol had anything to do with the death of 51-year-old Brenda Hatfield.

A West Des Moines officer tried stopping a car Wednesday morning, but it sped down a dead-end street. The officer later saw tire tracks towards Crystal Lake on the Des Moines Water Works property.

A dive team pulled the car from the lake and found Hatfield dead inside.

Kia minivan recall includes Iowa

Kia has recalled 80,000 minivans sold or registered in Iowa and several other states.

The company says a suspension part can break and cause drivers to lose control of the vehicles.

The recall affects Sedona minivans from 2006 through last year.

Bolkcom wants tax credits to help roads and bridges

The assistant majority leader in Iowa's senate has a thought on how to spend new tax credits.

Joe Bolkcom believes the $54 credits would really help fix the state's crumbling roads and bridges.

The Department of Revenue says many Iowans can receive the credit when they file this year's taxes.

Bolkcom, however, wants to "turn the Taxpayer Trust Fund into the taxpayer road fund."

Insurance commissioner sees nothing wrong with Wellmark ads

Iowa's insurance commissioner has no problem with ads from Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

The ads make fun of the technical problems associated with the federal Internet marketplace.

DM PD Seek One Suspect in 3 Convenience Store Robberies

Des Moines Police say one suspect may be behind the robberies of three convenience stores in the past week. The Des Moines Register reports they believe the man who held up the Kum and Go on Guthrie Monday night, Valero on E. Euclid earlier the same evening, and STAR Liquor on E. 14th Street Friday are on in the same. If you know something, call DM PD or Polk County Crime Stoppers.

Waveland and Bright Grandview Golf Courses CLose Next Wednesday

Des Moines officials say golfers have one more week before Waveland and Bright Grandview golf courses close for the season next Wednesday. KCCI reports A.H. Blank Golf Course will remain open throughout the year for golf, weather permitting. Temperatures and wind chill must be above 40 degrees to allow golfers access to the course.

Pella Pastor Getting New Trial

Iowa's Court of Appeals has overturned the guilty verdict in the case of former Pella Pastor Patrick Edouard, who was convicted on 4-counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor. The court fund the jury instructions gave a broader definition of "counselor" than should have been given. KCCI reports Edouard's been free during his appeal.

I-235 Ramp Reopens Tonight

The Windsor Heights exit ramp that’s been closed for months reopens tonight. The westbound I-235 ramp
at 73rd Street's scheduled to re-open at 10:00. It’s been closed since April for widening the interstate between 73rd and 63rd Streets. They’re adding an extra lane to the bridge that goes over 73rd Street. Work on the widening project will run into early December.

Hy-Vee Donates Turkeys

A big donation will help make sure local families can cook up a family feast this Thanksgiving. WHO-TV reports Hy-Vee's delivering 10,000 turkeys to 10 cities in 10 days. Jury selection's started in the retrial of 63-year old Vernon Huser for first degree murder. Huser's first conviction was tossed by the Iowa Court of Appeals for hearsay testimony. WHO-TV reports Huser's alleged to have hired a hit man to kill his ex-wife’s boyfriend in 2004.

Retaliation Suit Winner Wants State Job Back

A woman who won a $130,000 jury award in a case which found Iowa Workforce Development officials retaliated against her for filing a racial discrimination complaint now wants her state job back. KCCI reports Attorneys for Dorothea Polk filed a motion in Polk County District Court asking a judge to reinstate her to her job as a mail room clerk or an equivalent position.

Planned Parenthood Closing 4 Iowa Offices

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is closing offices in 4-cities. Their centers in Ankeny, Fort Dodge, Mount Pleasant and Washington will shutdown Dec. 12. Board Chair Bob Shaw says it's an effort to focus limited resources where the patients are. Less than 10% of Planned Parenthood's Iowa patients visited those four centers.

Home Invasion Robbery in Des Moines

Des Moines PD say a father and son suffered only minor injuries when four armed masked men got into their home early this morning through an unlocked back door and robbed them. The home invasion was in the 2700 block of Indianapolis Avenue. KCCI reports the gunmen ran when the son recognized three of them. They got away with $60 in cash and video games.

Local runner Forey Jacobson's suing the man who assaulted him two years ago, the bar they were in when it happened and the party bus company that dropped that man off at the bar that night. A jury's being asked to decide if Jacobson and his wife are entitled to damages for the injuries he suffered when Benjamin Vogl assaulted him. The beating put Jacobson in a coma for 2 weeks.

A Sears employee spotted the two filling a backpack with clothing and jewelry. The 10-year old ran after security confronted them. The 11-year olds still in the hospital.

Vote Tuersday on DM Airport Transportation Fees

Next Tuesday, Des Moines Airport Authority Board's expected to vote on new transportation fees on commercial vehicles visiting the airport. According to KCCI there'd be a per trip fee of $.50 on taxi's, hotel $1 on hotel shuttles, $2 on limousines, $1 for off airport parking operators, and $10 on charter buses. If approved, the new fees would go into effect on April 1.

Iowa DOT Cracking Down on Use of Undercover License Plates

Iowa DOT's acting on recommendations in a report released today calling for tighter regulation of undercover license plates. The Des Moines Register says the report found most of the almost 3200 sets of plates are being properly used, but over 200 sets have been lost or misused, 167 sets are missing, and 18 sets were used for purposes not allowed by law.

Ground Broken for Merle Hay Mall Renovation

There was a ground breaking at Merle Hay Mall today for its big renovation project. Plans call to the addition of a 900-seat 8-screen movie complex with a brewery, Flix Brewhouse. Several businesses have relocated from the mall's central court for the project which is expected to wrap up in late spring or early summer of 2014.

11 Arrested in Ankeny Prostitution Sting

Ankeny Police busted 11-people in a prostitution sting at a local hotel. KCCI reports officers used an ad on backpage.com. About 200-people inquired about the ad, but the only ones arrested showed up at the unnamed hotel. A prostitution conviction's punishable by up to 2 years in prison and a fine of $625 to $6,250.

2-Arrestrs in Drake Student Robbery

Des Moines PD have 2-men in custody and are after a third in the October 27th robbery of a Drake University student near 29th and University. 19-year old Lilcurtis Gilliam and 38-year old Alfonzo Patrick, both from Des Moines, are charged with first-degree robbery and false use of credit cards. The Des Moines Register reports Gilliam and Patrick are in the Polk County Jail.

Suspect Charged in Sunday Night Assault Outside Scores Bar

Des Moines Police say 29-year old Cornelius Brown, Jr.'s being held on $50-thousand bond in the Polk County Jail, charged in the assault on a man outside Scores Bar last Sunday. KCCI reports the victim, 26-year old Markus Mullenger of Urbandale, was found face down outside the bar bleeding from the face and ears. He's been in a medically induced coma at an area hospital.

Construction Underway at 5-MidAmerican Wind Turbine Projects

MidAmerican Energy says construction's underway on all five of its new wind turbine sites in Grundy, Madison, Marshall, O’Brien and Webster counties. WHO-TV reports the combined projects are part of the largest wind energy expansion in Iowa’s history. The 5-sites combined will add almost 450-wind turbines to Iowa's inventory. All the turbine blades are being built in Ft. Madison.

Ex-Polk County Court Employee Gets Wrongful Firing Settlement

A former Polk County District Court employee will be paid $125,000 as part of a settlement alleging wrongful termination resulting from retaliation following a violence in the workplace complaint. The Des Moines Register reports the Iowa Appeal Board's agreed to pay Cynthia Marshall $54,193 in compensation, $15,000 in back pay, and $56,000 to her attorneys.

Public Works Employee Calls in Windsor Heights House Fire

Fire officials are trying to determine what caused a fire this morning in a Windsor Heights home. WHO-TV reports a public works employee passing the home in the 1100 block of 68th Street, saw smoke coming from the kitchen and attic, and called 911. There was no one home at the time.

Chicago Man Busted for Alleged Sporting Goods Store Theft

A Chicago man has been accused of stealing merchandise from a Marshalltown sporting goods store where he'd just applied for a job. 18-year-old Lawrence Briggs entered the Sports Page Oct. 30, turned in a job application, then police say he grabbed three items worth $150. Briggs was called back for a job interview Friday, after a review of surveillance video, and arrested.

Work Release Escapee Back in Custody

Des Moines police say Orlando Rodriguez, an escaped work release program inmate has been found and is back in custody. Rodriguez, serving time for the death of Iowa National Guardsman Bruce Munday, failed to return to the Fort Des Moines Work Release Facility yesterday. He was found late this morning at a home in Des Moines.

Newton Insurer Moving Offices to Urbandale

Newton based Marsh and Mercer Insurance says it's moving its operations to Urbandale. The Newton office closes next February. A company spokesperson tells KCCI no jobs are being eliminated, and all employees are being given the chance to move to Urbandale. Marsh and Mercer are affiliated subsidiaries of Marsh and McLennan Companies.

Three Kids Safe After Brief Car Chase

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says three small children are safe and back with family members after they were found in a car that was involved in a short police chase this morning. KCCI reports deputies were looking for Charles Senase Jr. after an alleged domestic incident. He faces charges including non-payment of child support, child endangerment, and driving while suspended.

Ground Broken for Alice's Road Project

Ground was broken this morning on the multi-million dollar Alice's Road project from University Avenue to Ashworth Road. KCCI reports crews will be paving about 1.5 miles of roadway with four travel and turning lanes. Plans call for the roadway to be expanded to six lanes as traffic demand builds in the area. The total cost of this phase of the project is $13 million.

Higher pre-paid cell phone surcharge begins Friday

With a new month comes a higher surcharge for prepaid wireless services.

The legislature last session approved an increase of the surcharge covering Enhanced 911 services.

The increase begins on Friday. Anyone from that time on who buys a prepaid phone, service plan or minutes card pays 51 cents per transaction instead of 33.

LIHEAP enrollment encouraged

Iowans who need help heating their homes this winter should apply for LIHEAP.

Officials say they expect 85,000 households around the state to sign up this year.

They urge anyone who thinks they may need assistance to apply for LIHEAP as soon as possible before heating bills start spiking.

Iowa St. posts 29 new positions for faculty

Iowa State has published 29 new faculty positions as part of the university president's plan to expand hiring.

KCCI-TV reports the hires stem from the Presidential High-Impact Hires Initiative.

Money for the new jobs comes from $1.5 million in new state appropriations and $500,000 from changes in the academic affairs division.

The university president wants to hire 200 new faculty members in three years.

Merrill Middle gun threat suspect in custody

Des Moines Police say they have the Merrill Middle School gun threat suspect in custody.

A man claiming to have a gun inside the school office today prompted a building lockdown.

The Des Moines Register reports police identifying the suspect as 35-year-old Ryan Collier. They apparently spotted him on Woodland Avenue or Waterbury Avenue late this afternoon.

Police say Collier apparently argued with his girlfriend in the school office, made threats, and said he had a gun. He ran out of the school without showing a gun or firing one.

IA Supreme Court asks for input on tweeting and blogging

Iowa's Supreme Court continues examining the way people report the news in the digital age.

The courtroom already allows reporters and cameras. However, a new proposal would allow tweeting and blogging about cases from inside it, too.

DM PD Bust Man on OWI and Other Charges When SUV Hits Tree

38-year old Sean Lewis faces several charges including OWI, after apparently losing control of his SUV and hitting a tree last night near 24th and Clark. Des Moines PD say they tried to pull Lewis over earlier, but he took off and the pursuit was called off twice because of high speeds. WHO-TV reports Lewis is in the Polk County Jail.

Branstad Likes Tuition Freeze Idea--If

Gov. Branstad says he’d “love” to see tuition frozen for in state students at the state’s universities. The Des Moines Register reports Branstad says he'll have to see December's annual budget estimate and consider funding requests from other state agencies, before making that kind of recommendation.

Driver Cited in Motorcycle Accident

Des Moines police say a 19-year old man's been ticketed for his role in a motorcycle accident this morning. Police say 27-year old Justin Anderson was riding his motorcycle south on Hubbell, when a car pulled out of a driveway into his path. Anderson laid down the bike to avoid a crash. Anthony Raitt says he didn't see the bike. Anderson broke his arm and suffered some road rash.

Lawyers in DM Franchise Case Get $7-million in Fees

A judge's awarded $7 million to attorneys who successfully sued the city of Des Moines for charging improper franchise fees. KCCI reports the awards less than half the $15-million three attorney's involved had been after. The city has to return about $40-million, and the legal fees will come from that award.

WDM Man Facing Vehicular Homicde for Deadly Crash

30-year old Jerry Harbour, Jr.'s behind bars for vehicular homicide, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident after West Des Moines Police say his speeding pickup truck slammed into a car at University and 22nd. They also tell WHO-TV Harbour tried to leave the scene. He's in the Polk County Jail on $56,000 bond. The driver of the car, 29-year old Jeffrey Crispin, died at the scene.

Pleasant Hill Considered Pet Ownership Limit

Pleasant Hill's City Council's approved the first reading of a proposal to limit residents to a maximum four cats or dogs. Tom Colvin of the Animal Rescue league tells KCCI pet limits usually don't really address problem pet owners. Properties zoned agricultural wouldn't be subject to the limit.

University of Iowa Teaching Assistant Gets Too Much Exposure

Two suspects charged in a Marshalltown murder have entered pleas. 30-year Jeremy Gartin's pleaded not guilty to 1st degree murder. 55-year old Max Nelson, Jr.'s pleaded not guilty to accessory after the fact and abusing a corpse. Police say 59-year old David Warnell was found shot to death in the basement of a home earlier this month.

The District 13 seat opened when Republican Kent Sorenson resigned. An independent investigator has concluded Sorenson has likely broken ethics rules by receiving money from presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's political action committee and presidential campaign.

Iowa farmers behind on soybean and corn harvests

Iowa's agriculture secretary says people have harvested 70 percent of soybeans and 35 percent of corn statewide.

Bill Northey's numbers come under the premise that favorable weather has allowed farmers to get into their fields.

The state agricluture department reports the corn harvest 15 percentage points behind normal, and the soybean harvest 11 percentage points behind.

Pasture conditions have also improved with 52 percent rated as fair or better.

The weather statewide allowed fieldwork on 5.4 days last week.

Front End Loader Stolen from DM Public Works Facility

For the 2nd time this year, DM PD are investigating a burglary at a city public works building. A city employee reported a front end loader missing from the facility in the 900 block of southeast 22nd Street early Saturday. WHO-TV reports Someone got the machine started in a parking lot and drove it through a chain link fence. Surveillance cameras at the building aren't working.

Construction Boom in Downtown Des Moines

There's a building boom underway in downtown Des Moines. KCCI reports there are 12 projects underway, including redevelopment of Principal Financial's campus. Nearly 1,000 new condos and apartments, many in the Des Moines Building and the old Younkers building on Walnut, plus a Hampton Inn and an extended stay hotel on Water Street

Three Busted 2-Sought for Pleasant Hill Home Invasion

Three juveniles have been arrested, and police are after 2-more in an armed home invasion in Pleasant Hill Saturday night. KCCI reports 2 suspects had handguns, and got away with $200 in cash, cellphones, and other electronics. They were caught because a Polk County Sheriff's deputy remembered seeing them at a nearby gas station before the incident.

Davenport Woman Sentenced to 21-years for Bank Robbery

32-year old Ceneca Johnson of Davenport was sentenced today to 21-years and 10-months in federal prison for a robbery at Southeast National Bank in Davenport. Authorities say she used an imitation pistol in the holdup. She didn't get far, and all the money was recovered. She pleaded guilty in June.

Guinea Pigs Still Available for Adoption at Animal Rescue League

The Animal Rescue League says some of the 52-guinea pigs dropped off at their shelter earlier this year are still in need of homes. 31-have been adopted, 8 are in foster care, and 14 are still waiting for a home. And yes, that's more than 52--there've been some babies. KCCI reports the guinea pigs can be seen anytime the shelter's open.

Missing DM Rental Bicycles Found

The remaining three of the six bicycles stolen from the Des Moines Bicycle Collective have been found. Carl Voss tells KCCI one was all muddy, and two were a bit banged up. Police spotted a man riding one of them downtown and he's been arrested. The suspect claimed he wasn't involved in the thefts, but later told investigators the two remaining bikes were under the Fleur Drive viaduct.

Alice's Road Corridor Groundbreaking Set

The city of Waukee says groundbreaking for the new Alice’s Road Corridor will be Friday November 1st at 10:45 a.m. WHO-TV reports the interchange will give drivers in Des Moines western suburbs easier access to I-80. City officials are excited about the development opportunities ahead for the area.

DM Rental Bikes Vanish

A company that rents bicycles in downtown Des Moines says 6-of its bikes have disappeared in the past 2-days. KCCI reports a company spokesperson says all of them were rented using the same credit card. Two of the bikes were found outside an East Des Moines liquor store. The credit card owner says the card had probably been stolen.

63rd St. West Ramp to I-235 Reopens Tonight

The entrance ramp from 63rd Street west onto I 235 is expected to reopen tonight. KCCI reports the ramp closure's part of ongoing construction to add another lane on I-235 from 63rd to 73rd. The westbound exit ramp from I-235 onto 73rd Street is still closed, and not expected to reopen until November 7th.

Wells Fargo Cutting More Home Mortgage Division Jobs

Wells Fargo says it's cutting another 71-jobs in the Des Moines metro. The employees in the home mortgage division got the 60-days notice that their jobs were going away today. The jobs are at various area offices. A Wells Fargo spokesperson tells KCCI they're working to help them find other positions within the company.

More than 1,000 attend Farmcrawl

Over 1,000 people attended this year's Farmcrawl.

Eight farms in the Knoxville area welcomed visitors over the weekend.

Farmcrawl allowed people to see crops and farm animals, among other things, up close.

Those in attendance made a 42-mile loop of farms in spite of the dreary weather.

Melbourne man sentenced for voter fraud

An Melbourne man has received his sentence for voter fraud.

Iowa's secretary of state says Nickie Perkins has received a five-year suspended sentence and two years' probation.

Perkins has pleaded guilty to election misconduct.

As a felon, Perkins still registered to vote and cast a ballot in last year's general election.

4 shootings reported in month at Des Moines house

Police continue investigating at least the fourth shooting of which they know at a Des Moines house in the last month.

The Des Moines Register reports a man running into the house Saturday night after someone shot him in the leg. No one has reported any arrests.

A police report describes the house as a "known gang member hangout." Police say more drive-by shootings have happened there.

Department spokesman Jason Halifax says officers respond to gunshot calls "pretty regularly" in the neighborhood, which he says has a reputation for drug deals.

King Irving neighborhood association president Joann Muldoon says it has "taken a little bit longer" than anyone "would like to deal with the problem."

Boulder County to Cyclists: Stay Off Flood Damaged Mountain Roads

Boulder County raising its voice and pleading with cyclists to stay off flood-damaged mountain roads.
The Longmont Times-Call reports that county transportation director George Gerstle has temporarily closed several flood-damaged mountain roads to cycling. He's also asked cyclists to limit their bike riding on other roads in the mountains. Gerstle and Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle already had asked motorists, cyclists and hikers to avoid recreational trips through many of the areas west of the foothills.Gerstle said mountain roads can be unsafe while repair work continues. He cited construction equipment and steep drop-offs in washed-out ditches. Gerstle also says there's debris on mountain roadways from recurring rock slides.

Smoke Alarm Blitz in DM Highland Park Tomorrow

Over 300 volunteers are expected to hit the streets of Des Moines tomorrow in a smoke alarm installation blitz. KCCI reports the event, organized by The American Red Cross Serving Greater Iowa and the City of Des Moines Fire Department will focus on the Highland Park neighborhood, checking batteries, installing long life lithium batteries and installing new dual-sensor smoke alarms.

AZ Business Ordered to Stop Telemarketing Calls to Iowa

A Polk County judge's ordered Phoenix-based American Handicapped and Disadvantaged Workers Inc. and its owner, Adli Dasuqi, to stop telephone sales with pitches focused on helping disabled workers. KCCI reports Attorney General office says callers claimed to be disabled and were mislead Iowa residents.

State Workforce Development Lays Off 49 Due to Fed Shutdown

Iowa Workforce Development's laying off 49-employees as of today because of the federal government shutdown. Iowa's Department of Administrative Services and AFSCME who represent the laid off workers say it's to avoid a permanent reduction in the workforce and minimize the shutdown’s impact. WHO-TV reports the layoffs are expected to last up to 60 days.

DM Man Charged in Girlfriend Assault Was Out on Bond

The Des Moines man, charged with domestic assault and false imprisonment, for allegedly beating up his girlfriend for 17-hours was out on bond from an incident earlier this year. 36-year old Brian Case, was awaiting trial for allegedly brandished a machete at an animal control officer trying to catch his dog after a bite complaint in June.

Pedestrian Says Assaulted by Bicycle Rider

A pedestrian says a man cut him while he was walking home early this morning. WHO-TV reports 44-year old William Beasley says he was walking in the 600 block of East University around 4:30 a.m. when he heard a couple of bicycles approaching. He says he got out of their way, and one of the two riders yelled at him, and sliced his hand. No arrests have been made.

S C. Cop Canned Charged with Sending Explicit Pics to Polk County Juvenile

A police officer in West Columbia, South Carolina's facing federal charges after sending explicit photos of himself to a 13-year-old girl in Polk County last month. 30-year old Andrew Haney's charged with interstate commerce of obscene materials to a person under 16. Haney's been fired by the police department. The two met on a social media site.

2-Businesses Bounce Checks at Des Moines Hy-Vee

Des Moines Police are investigating after a Hy-Vee store reported more than $7,500 in bounced checks from two businesses. A spokesperson from the store at 3221 SE 14th St. tells KCCI the amount could go higher as more checks are added in the next few days. The checks were listed to United Transportation and Puma Expedite LLC.

Wandro New Polk County Administreator

Polk County's hired former Iowa DOT administrator Mark Wandro as its new county administrator. He replaces David Jones who's moved on to the job as Ankeny's City Manager. WHO-TV reports Wandro was an Assistant Polk County Engineer for more than 10 years. His new job will pay $185,000.

Gortz Haus Sues Over Gay Marriage Ceremonies

Betty Odgaard, owner of Gortz Haus is suing the Iowa Civil Rights Commission over finding they violated the civil rights of a gay couple by refusing to allow their wedding at her business, an art gallery and wedding venue, saying it violated her religious beliefs. The lawsuit claims the Odgaard's don't display art that violates their religious beliefs, and the state can't force them to violate their religious beliefs by planning and hosting gay wedding ceremonies.

Fed Techs W/Iowa Nat'l Gaurd Return to Work

Over 1,000 full-time federal technicians with the Iowa National Guard have been recalled to work. They were furloughed when the federal government shut down. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the Pay Our Military Act allows the Pentagon to eliminate furloughs for certain employees whose responsibilities contribute to the “morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness of service members.”

DM Fire Officials After Cause of East Side Garage Fire

Des Moines fire officials are trying to find the cause of an explosion that started a fire in a garage at 817 Buchanan on the city's east side just before 11 this morning. WHO-TV reports the fire spread to another garage at 813 Buchanan. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Nov. 19th Special Election to Fill Kent Sorensen State Senate Seat

Gov. Branstad's set November 19th as the date for a special election to fill the 13th District State Senate seat opened by the resignation of Kent Sorensen. Sorenson, a Republican from Milo, resigned Wednesday. He represented districts south of Des Moines.

DM PD Say Stabbing Victim Won't Identify Attacker

Des Moines PD say they're getting no help from 29-year old Richard Weigel. He drove himself to Broadlawns Medical Center after a girl he met a couple of days ago pulled a butcher-style knife from her purse and stabbed him in the chest during an argument. KCCI reports Weigel wouldn't give a name, saying he didn't want to get anyone into trouble. He's in good condition.

No Farm Bill Could Mean Higher Prices With the New Year

With Congress still not able to agree on a new Farm Bill, analysts are expecting prices of milk, cheese and butter to rise. KCCI reports as of January 1st, farmers will pass along the higher cost of feeding and transporting livestock to you. It could mean milk going from $3 to $6/gallon, and that will spread to other dairyt products.

Iowa DOT Recalling Confidential License Plates

Iowa DOT's going to rescind about 3,200 license plates issued to government agencies that have a special confidential status and reissue only those that are justified for sensitive work. Gov. Branstad ordered a review in July to cut the number of those plates, which also lets them avoid tickets from traffic cameras. DOT will reissue those that are necessary.

MidAmerican Part of New Energy Efficiency Program in Des Moines

MidAmerican Energy plans to promote energy efficiency programs in three Des Moines neighborhoods as part of a new pilot program. The Des Moines Register reports MidAmerican will join the city, the Center on Sustainable Communities, and Green Iowa AmeriCorps to spread awareness of energy usage and promote energy efficiency programs. An official announcement is tomorrow morning.

Three Busted in Sting at Johnston Massage Business

Three women have been arrested Johnston Police after an undercover sting at Asian Body and Relaxation Center at 5249 Merle Hay Road. WHO-TV reports police received several complaints and tips about the massage business. One of the three's charged with prostitution. All three are charged with operation without proper licensing. Police say the investigation's ongoing.

Two Charged After Discovery of Body in Marshalltown Home

30-year old Jeremy Garlin and 55-year old Max Nelson, both from Marshalltown, are in the Marshall County Jail after a tip led to the discovery of a body yesterday in the basement of a home in the 500 block of N. 4th Avenue. Garlin who lives in the home, is charged with 1st degree murder. Nelson's charged as an accessory after the fact, and with abuse of a corpse.

Appeals Court Upholds Conviction in HIV Transmission Case

Iowa's Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of 39-year old Nick Rhoades, who's HIV positive. Rhoades was sentenced to 5-years supervised release and registration on the sex offender registry after pleading guilty to criminal transmission of HIV in 2009. Rhoades had sex with a man he met online without disclosing his HIV status.

Iowa Court Rejects DNA Test Request in Murder Case

Iowa's Court of Appeals has rejected a request from a man serving life for the murder of his brother's entire family in 1975. Jerry Mark asked for DNA tests on cigarette butts found at the crime scene. He argued it may call into question whether he was even there. KCCI reports the court ruled testing would do little to undermine the state's "exceptionally strong, albeit circumstantial, case."

DM PD Get Tip on 1960 Cold Case

Des Moines police are going over a south side home after getting a tip about a link to the possible murder of Darlene Fitchett, a woman in her 30's, who disappeared in 1960. WHO-TV reports investigators used ground radar to examine the basement floor of the home at 608 Pleasant View Drive.The results will help police decide whether to excavate the site.

Last DM Wednesday Farmers Market of 2013 is Tomorrow

The final Wednesday Farmers' Market of the season is tomorrow in downtown Des Moines. The hours tomorrow are 10:30a.m. to 1:30p.m. on 13th Street between Grand and Locust. KCCI reports there'll be 30-vendors with a mix of seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables, specialty and artisan food, local art and entertainment. The Saturday Farmers' Market runs this year through Oct. 26.

DM Register Poll Could be Troubling for Branstad

While Gov. Branstad continues to have high job-approval ratings, A new Des Moines Register Poll shows some voters think it's time for him to move on. 55% say Branstad “has been in office long enough,” 35% say he should run again. Of that 55%, 71% are Democrats and 31% Republicans, Among Independents, 62% say he's been in power long enough, only 28% say he should run again.

One of David Flores Attorney's Has Law License Suspended

One of the attorney's that represented David Flores has had her license suspended. Authorities found Mary Kennedy violated a number of ethics rules. KCCI reports among them she accused the Polk County Attorney's office of misconduct during the Flores trial. She later admitted the accusations may have been tied mental instability. Among the conditions for the return of her license include a mental health professional verifying her fitness to practice.

Another I-235 Ramp Closing October 7th

Iowa DOT says the entrance ramp from 63rd Street west onto I-235 will close at 5a.m. on October 7th for construction. It was supposed to close Monday, but that's been pushed back a week. It's part of the project to add another lane on I-235 between 63rd and 73rd Streets.

Another Branstad Driver Cited for Speeding

Here we go again. Another state trooper driving Gov. Branstad's been cited for speeding. KCCI reports Trooper Darren Argabright was issued a warning in Franklin County August 27th, for traveling less than 10-mph over the posted speed limit. Argabright notified his superiors immediately, and after an internal investigation was given unspecified disciplinary action.

Casey's Store Burglary Investigated

Des Moines PD are looking for suspects after the door from a Casey's store was found in its parking lot on Echo Valley Drive early Tuesday. KCCI reports the only thing missing were several cartons of cigarettes. They believe someone hooked something to the back of a truck or SUV and pulled off the door. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

Polk County Starts Flu Shot Clinics

It's that time of year again, and Polk County's Health Department's started holding flu shot clinics. They'll host 50 between now and November. WHO-TV reports there's a clinic tomorrow from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at East High School. Most health insurance plans cover flu shots, but if you are uninsured the shots are $20. County officials say no one will be turned away because they can't pay.

Riverfront Y Property for Sale: $5.5-million

Some prime Des Moines real estate's for sale. The DM Business Record reports the Riverfront YMCA property, a 1.8 acre site on Locust Street's listed at $5.5-million. A high rise is expected to replace the current building. The property's available thanks to the land swap that moves the Y to the old Polk County Convention Complex.

Des Moines Gets Solheim Cup in 2017

The Des Moines Metro's hosting the Solheim Cup in 2017. It's the LPGA's biggest international team event. WHO-TV reports the Des Moines Golf and Country Club will host the competition between the top women golfers of Europe against the top women golfers in the U.S. It's expected to bring in over 250,000 spectators and be a big boost for the Des Moines metro economy.

Another I-235 Ramp Closes Next Monday

The westbound ramp off I-235 at 63rd Street closes next Monday. It's part of a construction project adding a lane between 63rd and 73rd Streets. Iowa DOT expects the ramp to remain closed until October 10th. The other ramps at 63rd are expected to remain open including the eastbound entrance and exit ramps and the westbound ramp for traffic on 63rd headed west onto I-235.

U of I Makes New List--Adulterers

America's No. 1 party school's on a new list: among the colleges with the most adulterous alumni. The Des Moines Register reports the Extra-marital dating site AshleyMadison.com found Iowa came in seventh in a poll of more that 10,350 members, finding 2.7% of them claiming to be Iowa graduates. The study only measures how many alumni have sought extra-marital affairs on their website.

Storm Sets Back Construction of New BBQ Restaurant in Johnston

Des Moines Metro barbecue lovers will have a longer wait for a new Jethro’s BBQ and Pork Chop Grill. Yesterday's storms tore apart the construction site for the new restaurant in Johnston. The storms collapsed some of the walls, and WHO-TV reports the owner says they'll have to start from scratch. The restaurant was supposed to open in December.

Judge Orders Pharmacy Board to Rehear Part of Bauder Pharmacy Case

Iowa's Board of Pharmacy has been ordered by a Polk County judge to hold a new hearing in the case of Bauder's Pharmacy, where almost 700,000 doses of prescription painkillers allegedly disappeared. The judge's order limits the rehearing to allegations that the pharmacy didn't have proper procedures. The pharmacy board has set a new hearing for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 8.

Iowa Gives Loans for Company Projects

Two Iowa companies have gotten loans from the state Economic Development Authority that they won't have to repay if their projects are done as promised. One of them is Jacobson Companies, a Des Moines warehouses and transport services firm is getting $250,000 to move to its corporate headquarters to Clive.

MidAmerican Says 5100 Still Without Power

About 5,100 MidAmerican Energy customers in the Des Moines metro are still without power after yesterday's storms. They may not get their power back on until tomorrow evening. Crews have over 322 locations have to be worked on before the lights can be turned back on. MidAmerican says crews will work around the clock to make repairs. Des Moines has almost 2300 customers in the dark.

SUV Drives into Sport Bar Twice

Des Moines PD are looking for the driver of an SUV that rammed the vehicle twice into Scores Bar in the 2300 block of Hickman Road a little after midnight. KCCI reports witnesses say there was an argument outside the bar, then the suburban hit the corner of the building, backed up, and hit near the front door. The driver's allegedly a regular customer. Damage to the building's about $20,000.

Metro Waste Betting on Methane Recovery at Landfill

Metro Waste is spending a little over $6-million for a new methane recovery facility east of Pleasant Hill. The facility will extract methane from the landfill and turn it into electricity for the area. Methane is one of the by-products of decomposing trash. A crane's installing three large engines that will turn the methane into electricity.

DMACC Opens New Building in Downtown Des Moines

Des Moines Area Community College has more room to train students in downtown Des Moines. They're showing off their new facility at the Capitol medical office building, which they purchased for $1.2-million. WHO-TV reports the new building is home for DMACC's nursing and early childhood education programs. The college got labs, computers, carpeting and renovations done a month before fall classes started.

GITS Shutting Down Creston Plant

GITS Manufacturing says it's shutting down its' plant in Creston. Employees have been told production will be moving to other Actuant facilities in Urbandale and China. KCCI reports 95-employees work at the Creston plant. 15-will be transferred to Urbandale, and 90-will lose their jobs. The cuts will start in November, with the plant doors closed June 30th of next year.

Iowa Nat'l Guard Reviewing Facility Security Policies

The Iowa National Guard, with 54 military facilities in 41 communities, will review its security policies after yesterday's deadly incident at the Washington Navy Yard. But a spokesperson tells the Des Moines Register no major security changes are expected. Since 9/11, visitors must pass a guard checkpoint, and must show a photo ID to gain entry to most facilities.

Construction Starts Sunday on Hickman Road

Expect to see lane closures at night starting this Sunday along Hickman Road in Dallas and Polk counties.
KCCI reports crews will be working Sundays through Thursdays, weather permitting, from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. They'll be lengthening left-turn lanes along Hickman at five intersections to help with traffic flow: Warrior Lane, Alice's Road, 156th Street, 142nd Street, 128th Street.

Driver Cited in Deadly Motoryccle Crash

A Des Moines woman's been cited for failure to yield in an SUV/motorcycle crash that killed 57-year old Nicholas Otto August 27th. Police say Katherine Bloch turned in front of Otto's motorcycle. He hid the side of the SUV and was killed. The deadly crash happened on Hickman Road.

Federal Judge Sentences Ankeny Couple for Mortgage Fraud

An Ankeny couple have been sentenced by a federal judge in a mortgage fraud case. KCCI reports 35-year old Jamie Bowers-Danielson got 41-months for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud charges.
36-year old Matthew Danielson was sentenced to a year and a day for bank fraud.

Dad of Evandale Murder Victim Gets Prison on Drug Charges

37-year old Daniel Morrisey's been sentenced to up to 90-years in prison, with a mandatory minimum 30-years on a guilty plea to drug charges. KCCI reports the drug charges are tied to events before and after the disappearance and murder of his daughter and her cousin disappeared. Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins vanished from Evansdale in July, 2012. Their bodies were found last December.

Heading for Record Low Tornado Year in Iowa

Barring a surprise storm, 2013 will be a record low year for tornadoes in Iowa. The Des Moines Register reports there've been 15-this year, the lowest number since tracking started 33-years ago. The National Weather Service says Iowa's average is 47-tornadoes/year. Is a fall Tornado possible? The Des Moines Register reports there've been 92 in September, October, November and December since 1980.

Same DM Home Hit By Burglars 4-times in a Year

Des Moines PD's investigating 4-burglaries at the same home in the past year. The house is in the 5300 block of SE 9th Street. WHO-TV reports the most recent break in was yesterday during the lunch hour. A neighbor called police after seeing the garage door open, and knowing the owner wasn't home. This time thieves got away with guns, electronics, and jewelry

WDM Breaks Ground Soon on Archery Facility at Raccoon River Park

There's a ground breaking ceremony at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines on the 23rd. The city will be starting work on a new archery facility, first of its kind in Iowa, which should be open to the public by the spring of next year. WHO-TV reports the project will cost $173,000, and that includes money from the city, donations, and grants.

P{art of Merl Hay Road in Johnston Closing Monday

If you travel Merle Hay Road in Johnston, be warned. Starting Monday the intersection of Merle Hay Road and NW 64th Place will be closed for five days as the city’s public works department taps a water main. The southbound lanes of Merle Hay will be closed, and traffic will be reduced to two lanes in the road’s northbound lane.

DHS Dropped Ball in Child Development Center Case

Iowa's ombudsman says the state failed to properly monitor a child care center after discovering children engaging in sexual behavior. A report from Ruth Cooperrider says the Department of Human Services did not follow up after complaints of sexual behavior among children in 2010 at The Child Development Center in Des Moines. DHS has accepted some of the reports recommendations including clearer rules on reporting inappropriate sexual behavior to parents.

Newton Man Facing State Charges, Now Faces Federal Child Porn Charges

72-year old James Brock of Newton, facing state charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and invasion of privacy, for allegedly using hidden cameras to film kids and adults undressing in his home to use a tanning bed and pool, now faces federal charges of three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor/production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

School Board Elections Underway

Polls are open statewide for school board elections today. In Des Moines, 10 candidates are chasing 4-seats, while 7-are in the running for 4-seats in Waukee. There's also a property tax levy up for renewal that helps fund Iowa's community colleges. Polls close at 8 p.m.

Principal Financial Boosts DM Metro School Mentoring Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa has received a $15,000 grant from Principal Financial Group to improve a school-based mentor program for children. KCCI reports the program, in 33-schools in the DM Metro, matches over 300 children with mentors who meet them in school on a weekly basis. The grant will help pay for educational and physical activities, as well as relationship building between students and mentors.

State Says Wasserbahn Waterpark Agrees to Shut Down

Iowa's Public Health Department says the Wasserbahn Waterpark at the Clarion Inn in Williamsburg's agreed to close its activity pool, wading pool, water slides and spa as part of an agreement with them. KCCI reports the parks been repeatedly cited for state violations including failure to properly chlorinate the swimming facility, maintain proper water chemistry, test the water and keep records.

Legislators to Ask Questions About Juvenile Home

The Iowa Senate Oversight Committee meets next Tuesday to discuss problems at the state-run Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. The Des Moines Register's reported for at least 17 years the home has placed children as young as 13 in long-term isolation cells the facility calls "control rooms" and "quiet rooms" sometimes in violation of court orders.

Pop Up Crate And Barrel to Jordan Creek

The Des Moines Business Record's reporting that Crate and Barrel will open a holiday pop-up store in Jordan Creek Town Center. The store will open on Oct. 29 and will remain open until the end of the year.
The Business Record says "the Tree Lot at Crate and Barrel will have holiday decor and gifts, and a series of in-store events and special promotions.

Tickets On Sale for ISU Bacon Expo

ISU's now selling tickets for its first exposition celebrating all things bacon. Tickets went on sale today for Bacon Expo on Oct. 19 in the Scheman Building Courtyard at the Iowa State Center. Students are organizing the event, offering visitors hundreds of pounds of bacon samples and a bacon-eating contest.

Bas Main Break Reported on SE 14th and East Diehl

A gas main break's been reported on Southeast 14th Street and East Diehl Avenue, just north of Army Post Road. KCCI reports there have been no evacuations reported. Traffic's been slowed in the southbound lanes of SE 14th, and you're advised to take a different route if possible.

Burglar Drives Through Wall But Fails to Escape DM Police

Des Moines PD say a burglar drove a truck through a garage wall to get away from them early this morning. WHO-TV reports police saw 25-year old Benjamin Algreen in the garage of a home in the 3800 block of SE 8th Street, the homeowner heard noise and called 911. He drove the truck through several yards and fences before crashing into a tree. He's in the Polk County Jail on multiple charges.

Plea Deal for Ankeny Dad Charged With Killing His Daughter

The Ankeny man accused of shooting and killing his daughter's reached a plea deal. KCCI reports 51-year old Scott Hazelbaker will plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter, and the state will drop the assault causing injury charge. When he's sentenced, Hazelbaker will face a maximum five years in prison or minimum probation. Hazelbaker's attorney says his client never intended to hurt Emily Hazelbaker.

Search for Suspects in Cowles Commons Stabbing

Des Moines Police are reviewing surveillance video from area businesses, hoping to find out who stabbed Timothy Pridgen at Cowles Commons around 11:30 this morning. WHO-TV reports witnesses say the 48-year old was attacked by three or four people who ran. Police say Pridgen hasn't given them any information that he knew who'd assaulted him.

Construction crews will start work Monday at Gray's Lake Park. They'll be stabilizing and repairing the north shore of the lake on the south bank of the Raccoon River. Officials say years of erosion, flooding and wave action have washed away soil and left a steep bank behind. No construction work is planned on the weekends.

Court Clerk's Offices Back to Full-Time Hours

Clerk of Court offices statewide are going back to full time hours, 8a.m. to 4:30.m. Monday to Friday. KCCI reports the recession led to budget cuts which meant shorter hours. Clerks of court work with judges, judicial magistrates, and court employees to manage and maintain all court records, accept and process fines, fees and court costs, as well as child support and civil judgments.

Taylor Recycling Plant Fire-Arson Not Ruled Out

Arson hasn't been ruled out as the cause of a 4-day firer at the old Taylor Recycling Plant in Des Moines. WHO-TV reports investigators got inside the building today, and they were able to eliminate spontaneous combustion as a cause. Authorities say they believe the fire was set. They say without witnesses to help determine how the fire started, they may never know the case.

Polk Cty Supervisors Exoected to Vote on Events Center Lawsuit Settlement

Polk County's Board of Supervisors is expected to vote tomorrow on a resolution approving a settlement in a lawsuit over the Iowa Events Center. HOK Sports, Inc., now known as Populous, was sued over the design and construction of the Center. KCCI reports the deal would pay the county $1.4 million in exchange for dismissing the lawsuit, originally filed in April 2011.

Fitxgerald Not Going for Governor

WHO-TV reports State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, a democrat, won't be running for Governor. Two other democrats, State Rep. Tyler Olson and Bob Krause have already said they're not interested. State Sen. Jack Hatch hasn’t made an announcement but has expressed interest. Gov. Branstad hasn't said what his plans are, but is expected to run again.

Arrests in Daughenbaugh Beating Death

Des Moines Police have arrested two men and have a warrant out for the third, for first degree murder in last Sunday's beating death of Richard Daughenbaugh near 2nd Avenue and Center Street. KCCI reports the suspects in custody are Yarvon Russell and James Shorter. The warrant is for Kent Tyler, III.

Reports of Mountain Lion Seen in NE Des Moines

Des Moines police are investigating reports of a mountain lion seen in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 4214 Hubbell Avenue. Residents of the complex, in the northeast corner of the city, tell KCCI they've seen it multiple times in the early morning hours. Big cats have been seen before in that area of the city.

3-DM Teens Busted for Kum and Go Robbery

Three Des Moines teens, one only 14, have been arrested for first degree robbery after the alleged hold up of a Des Moines Kum and Go early yesterday. 18-year old Jonathan Willies, and 18-year old Justin Gardner also allegedly assaulted the store clerk trying to get cash from the register. Police say the 14-year old's admitted being the driver of the getaway car.

WDM PD Investigate Sunday Shooting Outside Val Air Ballroom

So far, no arrests in yesterday's shooting of a man outside the Val Air Ballroom early Sunday morning. West Des Moines PD were called to Mercy Hospital after 25-year old Freddie Millsap, Jr. was brought in. WHO-TV reports he says he was hit in the arm walking to his car. A friend took him to Mercy.

Three Metro Area Attorneys Recommended for Upcoming Iowa Court of Appeals Vacancy

Gov. Branstad has 30-days to pick one of three candidates recommended by the judicial nominating committee to replace Larry Eisenhauer on Iowa's Court of Appeals. The three are Des Moines district Judge Christopher McDonald, Assistant Attorney General Jeanie Vaudt of West Des Moines, and attorney Sharon Greer from Marshalltown.

New DMACC Southridge Center Open

The DMACC Center for Career and Professional Development officially opened this morning at the Southridge Mall. KCCI reports mall officials consider the new DMACC facility an important element in the transformation of Southridge. The new DMACC center offers new programs and departments, and plans to more actively recruit students south of Des Moines.

Thieves Steal Gear from Polk County Master Gardners' Altoona Greenhouse

Authorities are trying to track down whoever broke into the Polk County Master Gardeners' New greenhouse in Altoona, making off with thousands of dollars in new fans, lights, and tools. Most of the gear was donated to the group, which devotes its time to beautifying Polk County. KCCI reports the theft happened sometime Wednesday or Thursday.

Iowa's Drying Out

The dry conditions aren't getting any better statewide. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report says 82% of the state is either abnormally dry or in moderate drought. That’s better than the beginning of the year, when the whole state was dry. The area considered in drought is 35% of the land, most in west-central counties. The area considered abnormally dry grew by 8%, to 47%.

More Cryptosporidium Cases Reported

The number of cryptosporidium cases in Iowa keeps climbing, up 173 last week to a statewide total as of yesterday of 538. WHO-TV reports Polk County has the most, 261. Cryptosporidium's a parasite, found in soil, food, water or on surfaces that have been contaminated with feces from an infected animal or human. It can cause severe diarrhea for up to 30-days,

Polk County Property Tax Bills Are On the Way

If you own property in Polk County, your property tax statement is in the mail. The county's sent out 177,000 of them, covering $885-million in revenue. The Des Moines Register reports Treasurer Mary Maloney says the easiest way to pay your property tax bill is on line. You can see and pay at www.iowataxandtags.gov. DM PD Capture Work Release Walk Away

Des Moines Police took 20-year old Temmira Morrison of Des Moines to the Polk County Jail, after her arrest yesterday. She'd walked away from the Fort Des Moines Work Release Facility earlier this month. She's charged with escape from custody, work release violation, interference with official acts and harassment of public officers.
