Southwest Arrival Boosts DM Air Travel

Southwest Airlines is having a big impact on travel in and out of Des Moines International. AN airport spokesperson tells KCCI travel numbers are up 14% from November of last year to last month, and for the year, boardings are up 9%. Southwest's arrival this year has boosted competition, which has lowered fares. Right now the only flights are to Chicago, but new routes are expected.

MidAmerican Finishes 3-Wind Energy Projects

MidAmerican Energy's finished three Iowa wind projects, generating a combined 407-megawatts of electricity. ABC5 reports that gives MidAmerican about 33% of its electricity generation from wind power. The company supplies electricity to about 732,000 customers in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota.

State Tax Collections Up Year over Year

The state's net take from all taxes for the year ended November 30th was up just over 8.5%, or $568-million. The Legislative Services Agency says the biggest contributors to the increase: Individual income was up close to 7% at $199.2-million; sales and use taxes up $133-million or 6%, and corporate income tax collections up $190-million or 67.5%.

February Sentencing for Egg Bribery Case Plea

The ex-manager of an Iowa egg farm, faces a maximum 5-years in federal prison when he's sentenced in February. Tony Wasmund pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bribe a USDA inspector to allow sales of eggs that had been withheld for failing federal standards. Wasmund worked for Jack DeCoster, whose northern Iowa operations were blamed for the 2010 salmonella outbreak that led to recalling over half a billion eggs.

Iowa Woman Murdered in Colorado

25-year old Emily Weikert of West Des Moines, the apparent victim of a murder/suicide in Colorado. She was shot this morning in a parking garage at the Denver Tech Center. KCCI reports police consider 51-year old Robert Lewis a person of interest in her murder. He was a former co-worker, fired a couple of weeks ago for harassing her. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

DM Cop Hurt in Crash Into Utility Pole

A Des Moines Police officer was injured when he steered his cruiser into a snow bank and power pole, rather than hit a car that stopped short in front of him. The officer was running radar near 33rd and Hickman when he started after the car, which took off. That driver was later caught and arrested for speeding, driving without insurance, and driving on a suspended license.

$15,000 in Damage From DM House Fire

A fire did about $15,000 in mostly smoke damage to a home at 932 Leland Avenue in Des Moines this morning. KCCI reports the homeowner told firefighters smoke started coming from an upstairs bedroom after she'd plugged in an electric blanket. No official cause for the fire's been released, but officials say a heating pad and electric blanket were on in a bedroom.
