The number of juveniles taken to court for serious crimes in Polk County's gone up 80% from the first 9 months of 2009 to the first 9 months of this year. According to the Des Moines Register, those numbers statewide for the same period are down 19%. Deep cuts local, state, and federal funding have doubled the juvenile probation caseloads, a year waiting list for state-funded mental health services, and fewer programs to deter teens from crime.
