Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says five new ships will be joining the fleet, including the USS Sioux City. The Sioux City will be in the littoral combat design, fast-over 40 knot top seed, and able to operate in shallow and deep waters. The Des Moines Register reports littoral class ships will have smaller crews and have multi-mission capability: anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, special ops, and homeland defense. The Sioux City will be built in Wisconsin.
