Fighter jets cuts bill passes

The senate has approved a new defense spending bill that calls for eliminating all F-16 fighter jets including the 21 based in Des Moines.

It now goes to the president and he is expected to sign it.

The jets have been used by the Des Moines based 132nd fighter wing since 1992.

Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin voted against the bill in a 81-14 split.

The 132nd Fighter Wing is expected to be replaced by a Des Moines unit remotely flying unmanned aircraft with a loss of around 32 positions.
