The heat wave lasts long enough, we could be treated to something called “pavement explosions,” which the Des Moines Register reports can happen when when moisture can't escape through non-porous cement, causing it to explode. There've been no incidents yet, but Des Moines Public Works Director Bill Stowe says he's surprised we haven't seen any already. Stowe says it's a combination of high temperatures, steam pressure from trapped moisture and pavement weakness.
