Three former Iowa Supreme Court justices voted out after ruling the state ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, were awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. Caroline Kennedy presented the award to ex Chief Judge Marsha Ternus, justices David Baker and Michael Streit. They "were chosen in recognition of the political courage and judicial independence in setting aside popular opinion to uphold the basic freedoms and security guaranteed under the Iowa constitution."
