A Des Moines animal rights group's collected 2,000 signatures on a petition demanding that Polk County prosecutors go for the maximum jail time for 18-year old Luis Lara-Leyva of Urbandale. He's charged with animal cruelty for June's death of a German Shepherd from dehydration on a 91-degree day. The Des Moines Register reports the charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum year in jail and an $1,875 fine.
