Cougar reported on northeast side of Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say officers couldn't find a mountain lion that was reported on the northeast side of Oskaloosa in south-central Iowa.

The Oskaloosa Police Department says it was notified about the sighting about 3 p.m. on Saturday. Two residents reported seeing the animal head north.

Officers who responded were unable to find the animal.

Experts say mountain lion reports have become more and more common as their numbers climb in the Plains and the animals seek new territory. One was shot and killed in October on the north side of Des Moines.

They also are called cougars, pumas, panthers or catamounts.
