Iowa's snow snarl . . . by the numbers

Officials say some drivers were stuck along parts of Interstate 80 for hours as progress to clear the roadway slowed yesterday because of tough weather.

The Iowa State Patrol said drivers in a 10-mile stretch between mile marker 187 and 197 were in grid lock traffic in both directions.

The state Department of Public Safety said emergency responders brought food and water to the area, but poor weather conditions kept drivers out there for several more hours. Officials recommended that drivers stay calm and patient.

Authorities said there were at least 80 reported crashes in Iowa. There were more than 160 emergency calls, more than 160 motorist assists and nearly 40 requests for wrecker services.
