Mediacom techs putting nodes back online

About 2,000 Mediacom customers remained without service Friday after a storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of Iowa.

Mediacom spokeswoman Phyllis Peters said more than 100 technicians worked through Friday and into today, with a team scheduled for Sunday just in case, to restore service.

The customers all were in the greater Des Moines area, including some in Dallas County.

Peters said company officials chose not to bring in crews from other parts of the state to handle the outages.

“They have their own issues,” she said.

On Wednesday and into Thursday, a snowstorm blasted the area, causing power outages that took down many Mediacom “nodes,” which provide service to about 220 customers each. In addition, Mediacom crews still had to repair 72 cable lines downed by snow and ice buildup.

Peters said the number of customers affected continues to change; at 5 p.m. Friday, 2,000 customers were still without service.

Just how quickly service returns depends on how quickly MidAmerican Energy returns power to the lines that service Mediacom’s nodes.

As they do come back online, Peters said power generators that are being used can be relocated.
