Des Moines officials have shut down the Southwest 5th Street Pedestrian Bridge over the Raccoon River because of structural damage. The bridge closes at the end of business today and will stay that way indefinitely. WHO-TV reports the bridge has advanced deterioration and corrosion of structural elements, and there are questions about the integrity of prior repair work.
