Tom Harkin on farm bill

Sen. Tom Harkin says he is optimistic that a half-trillion-dollar farm bill will be approved by Congress this summer.

The Senate is now preparing to debate the measure, where it’s expected to win approval. The bill would cut spending by $23 billion – significantly less than the $33 billion in cuts House leaders have proposed.

Congressional leaders agree that the two chambers will have to agree on a bill before the end of August if legislation is to be enacted before next year’s growing season.

The Iowa Democrat was in Des Moines Saturday morning, discussing the farm bill at the downtown farmers’ market.
