State and local officials continue to research and evaluate possibly designating a Des Moines metropolitan area bypass as an interstate.
Area leaders have been talking about designating the U.S. Highway 65/69/Iowa Highway 5 beltway an interstate for more than two years.
The beltway runs from Interstate Highway 80 near Altoona south to Des Moines and then connects with Interstate Highway 35 near West Des Moines. The beltway runs along the Polk and Warren county lines.
