If you think Iowa is a pretty peaceful state, well it does rank above average in the United States. The most peaceful state in terms of the lack of violent crime and the low jail populations, is Maine. Louisiana is the least peaceful. Iowa ranked 9th. That fits into the general conclusion of the study. The southern states are the least peaceful, and the Midwest generally fares much better. The Northeast wins overall.
