Get Ready for a Grand Avenue Detour This Summer

The bridge at Grand Avenue and 63rd St. will shut down for the whole summer. The bridge in such bad shape that if it isn't fixed, there would have to be a limit set on the weight of vehicles on it or even close to it.

Next month, construction starts on the 98-year-old Grand Avenue bridge over Walnut Creek just east of that intersection. It will close that part of Grand for several months.

According to City of Des Moines officials, recent bridge inspections show the bridge is structurally deficient and is near the end of its life. The $3.3 million project will remove the existing bridge, build a new one, and replace the sidewalks and parts of the trails, which means a detour for commuters and pedestrians.

Posted detours will instruct drivers to take 56th St. north to University or south to connect back to 63rd.

Construction should start in early May and last six months into November.
