Waterloo Police Officer Shoots, Kills Pitbull During Attack

56 year old Phil Henderson of Waterloo, was walking in the 300 block of Western Avenue, just south of downtown, on Wednesday evening, when he saw an unleashed pit bull on a sidewalk across 4th Street West.

Henderson led Phoenix away, but turned around to see the pit bull charging at full speed right at them.

According to Henderson, “(The pitbull) grabbed on to the neck of his dog and dragged him down,”

Waterloo Police Officer Ed Savage was driving by and saw the attack, stopped and got out to help.

According to Henderson, the officer fired his Taser at the pit bull, which did not work and neither did a container of pepper spray or hitting the pit bull with a baton. The the pit bull would not let got of Phoenix.

Officer Savage then communicated back to Waterloo Police, requesting permission to shoot the dog. After securing permission, Savage shot the pit bull once, in the back. The pit bull let go of Phoenix before stepping away and collapsing. The dog died soon after.

Henderson's dog Phoenix had to undergo surgery at a local pet hospital, but is recovering.
