Des Moines took $120,000 from the 4,122 citations issued from the city's traffic cams last month; and the contractor, Gatso, got $96,000 in fees. Money from the citations is channeled into the city’s general fund, a part of the operating budget that pays for core city services such as police, fire, libraries and parks. KCCI reports the average fine's $85. There's still a bill pending in the legislature that would ban these kinds of cameras.
