Hunger Fight Ends Tomorrow Night

Meals From the Heartland is running its fifth annual Hunger Fight this weekend to get meals to starving people, some right here in Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports 15,000 volunteers will pack 5 million dry meals by tomorrow. Each meal package feeds up to six people, and has rice, textured soy protein, dried vegetables and vitamins.

Another Mental Evaluation in Dalasta Case

Kevin Dalasta's going to have a two month mental health evaluation before Polk County prosecutors decide whether or not to drop vehicular homicide charges against him. Dalasta was charged in 2010 for killing two children when he ran a stop sign and hit their van in Ankeny. His trial's been repeatedly delayed due to issues with his recovery from multiple brain surgeries.

Authorities After Cause of Des Moines House Fire

Investigators are still looking for the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in the 1500 block of 30th Street in Des Moines last night. Firefighters tell KCCI they believe it started on a piece of furniture on the front porch and spread. There were children in the home at the time, but there were no injuries. The Red Cross says it's helping the family find a place to stay.

Grassley Looking Into Wells Fargo Employee Firing

Sen. Charles Grassley's looking into the firing of a Wells Fargo Home Mortgage employee Richard Eggers for a petty crime he committed in 1963. The company says it had to under new federal employment guidelines, intended to weed out people guilty of ID theft and mortgage fraud. Grassley says it looks like they're being applied across the board because of a possible $1-million-day-fine for noncompliance.

Johnston Residents Being Asked for Green Light on New High School

The Johnston School District's asking voters September 11th to approve a $51-million bond issue to build a new high school. KCCI reports the new building would hold a maximum 1800 students and be built at the intersection of NW 62nd Avenue, NW 100th Street and Newport Vista Drive. District officials say they've outgrown the current high school, which they want to convert to a new middle school for grades 8 and 9.

Labor Day Triathalon

A labor of love this Labor Day weekend as some of the world’s best triathletes hit town to compete in the Hy-Vee Triathlon. Lots of events leading up to Sunday's race. Tonight, the band SOul Asylum is playing a free concert downtown in the City Hall parking lot. Saturday morning the Iron Kids race and an expo at Hy-Vee Hall - then the big race Sunday - with the age group competition in the morning and elite groups in the afternoon.

Longer Life

Living a healthy life means living a longer life - even among people who are well into their 70s. New research shows getting regular exercise, staying engaged with friends and family, and abstaining from smoking were all associated with longer life. All from a study that followed people in their mid-70s and older for close to two decades.The healthy traits apparently added, on average, five years to women’s lives and six years to men’s.

Altoona Stormwater Project Goes Forward

Altoona's moving forward with the next part of a big storm water and sanitary sewer project that involving about 100-homes. The city's approved a half million dollar contract for underground 4- and 8-inch pipes as an added storm sewer collection system for better drainage. The work, just west of Sam Wise Youth Complex is expected to starts in the next couple of weeks.

Accused Colorado Theater Gunman Applied at U of I

James Holmes, the suspect in the murders of 12 at a Colorado movie theater, had applied to the graduate neuroscience program at U of I in 2010. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports paperwork released by the university reports Holmes' application was denied, with one professor putting in writing after the application interview: "Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances."

More Iowa School Districts Using Texts and E-mails

More schools in Iowa are using tech to keep parents in the loop on what's happening in schools. Texts and e-mails went out this morning to let parents know about a lock down at Corning Elementary School in Adams County. KCCI reports there was never any danger to students, but more districts are using texts and e-mails to get word out quickly to large number of people about events.

Not In Our Town Campaign Kickoff

Hundreds of people wearing orange converge on the Marshalltown Courthouse during the noon hour today. It was part of an anti-bullying campaign tied to the Public Television series 'Not In Our Town.' Chocolate Study

Sweet news out this morning - New research shows men who eat a moderate amount of chocolate each week may be less likely to have a stroke, compared to men who don’t eat any chocolate. Most studies suggest that health benefits come mainly from dark chocolate, but the new research seems to extend these perks to milk chocolate. The study took place in Sweden, where about 90% of the chocolate is milk chocolate. Chocolate contains heart-healthy antioxidants called flavonoids, which may be responsible for some of its health benefits. Other studies have shown that eating a moderate amount of dark chocolate may protect against heart disease and also help with memory.

Blue Moon

Once in a Blue Moon - this Friday will be the second full moon this month which doesn't happen very often - the first full moon of the month was on August first. The next blue moon won't happen until July of 2015. There can also be double Blue Moons - the last time that happened was in 1999 and the next time you will see two months in on e calendar year that have two full moons will be in 2018. And a side note - this Friday is also the day of the private funeral service for astronaut Neil Armstrong - the first man to walk on the moon

Water Works Conservation Call Ends Saturday

Des Moines Water Works is lifting its call for voluntary call for water conservation during the drought as of Saturday.A Water Works spokesperson says the conservation measures are no longer necessary, but they say the call to conserve could be reinstated if low water flows and dry conditions continue into next spring and summer. July was an all-time record month with 2.5 billion gallons of water used.

Bauder Pharmacy Hearing Pushed Back to November

There's been a other delay, to November, for a State Pharmacy Board hearing into missing drugs at Bauder Pharmacy in Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports the reason for the new delay is pharmacy co-owner Mark Gaziano's new attorney, who needs time to get up to speed on the case. Charges were brought against Bauder in May over 740,000 plus pain pills the Pharmacy Board said couldn't be accounted for.

MD. Governor Headlining Harkin Steak Fry

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will headline Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry next month. KCCI reports O'Malley's chair of the Democratic Governors Association, a strong supporter of President Obama and a likely 2016 presidential contender. The steak fry, in its' 35th year, is one of biggest Democratic events of the year in Iowa. It's September 16th at the Warren County Fairgrounds.

Libertarian Candidate Will Be on Iowa Ballot

Libertarian Presidential candidate Gary Johnson will be on Iowa's ballot in November. A three member state panel decided today that current law on conventions to get on the ballot is vague, and they chose to make the call on the side of open ballot access. The panel says it'll ask lawmakers to better define the convention process in state law.

Hunting and Fishing

The sale of hunting and fishing licenses is down in Iowa, but state officials say that doesn’t necessarily mean people arent interested in the sports. Even though sales of hunting licenses to Iowa residents dropped 13 percent from 2007 to last year, and resident fishing licenses declined about 4 percent - Nationally, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates hunting is up 9 percent and fishing has increased 11 percent. State officials say the decline in fishing licenses could be because of recent flooding - and hunting sales could be hurt because of the declining pheasant populations

Howlett Killer Dies in Prison

Iowa's Corrections Department says Jerry Lee Proctor died at the Anamosa State Penitentiary Friday. According to a department spokesperson, the 42-year old committed suicide by hanging, although an autopsy's pending. Proctor was sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder in the 1994 kidnap/murder of Patricia Howlett.

Obama Rallies Students at ISU

President Obama told a crowd of around 6,000 students at ISU today they'll decide what's next for America. KCCI reports the President's message to students included a reminder that because they believed in 2008, they've made a difference in health care, energy, and college tax credits.

Iowa Guard Troops Deploy to Afghanistan

A group of 60-Iowa National Guard soldiers said goodbye to friends and family in Johnston today. The members of the 1034th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion are heading first to Fort Hood, Texas for training, then heading overseas to Afghanistan. Their deployment is expected to last one year.

Peregrine CEO's Wife Wants Annulment

Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russ Wasendorf, Sr., already faces a mountain of legal trouble over $200-million in missing client funds, and allegedly lying to regulators; and now faces a personal legal issue. His new wife, Nancy Paladino's filed for annulment. The two wed in June, and KCCI reports she claims they married under 'false pretenses,' since Wasendorf knew he was about to be busted and try to kill himself, but didn't tell her.

Challenge to Libertarian Party Candidate on November Ballot

A committee of three top Iowa officials meets tomorrow to discuss whether or not Libertarian Party Candidate Gary Johnson's name appears' on the November ballot. The Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Chief Deputy for the State Auditor heard arguments on a challenge to Johnson's candidacy yesterday. Candidates have to be certified for the ballot by 5p.m. tomorrow.

Joy Ride

A 7 year old has been cited for driving without a license - yes, I said 7 year old. The Gazette reports that a 7-year-old boy hit two trees and a parked car after he took his mother’s car for a joy ride. He got a bloody lip from his trip but no one else was injured. His adventure ended when the car rolled over an embankment between a restaurant and a bank. Word from police - he took off because he wants to move to a different house. Along with the drivers license citation - the boy was also cited for failuer to maintain control, hit and run and no insurance

Traffic Warning for Farm Progress Show in Boone

The Iowa State Patrol's warning drivers to expect slow traffic in Boone starting tomorrow with the opening of the 2012 Farm Progress Show. Organizers expect 200,000 people to attend the three-day event, and they'll be driving 20,000 cars and trucks to Boone County tomorrow through Thursday. The heaviest traffic's expected on I-35 near Ames, U.S. Highway 30 between Ames and Boone, and state Highway 17 near Boone.

Winter Predictions from Farmers' Alamanac

The Farmers' Almanac's 2013 winter predictions are out. The Maine based publication says Iowans can expect big temperature swings and periods of storminess this winter. According to KCCI the much of the Midwest can expect is a milder than normal winter with average precipitation; with colder than normal temps and a mix of snow sleet and rain for Wisconsin and Illinois.

DM Returning State Bike Lame Grant

Des Moines is expected to returning a grant to the state tonight, that was to add bike lanes and re-stripe Hubbell Avenue. The Des Moines Register reports the $360,000 grant's going back to IDOT because there's been no support from area residents and business for the re-striping. The council's expected to keep an eye on the area and look for other ways to boost safety.

Wells Fargo Worker Canned Over 1963 Crime

Wells Fargo Home Mortgage has fired an Iowa employee over a 1963 conviction. KCCI reports 68-year old Richard Eggers was convicted for using a cardboard cutout of a dime in a Carlisle washing machine. Banks are enforcing new employee federal employment guidelines aimed at people convicted of id theft and mortgage fraud, but they're being applied across-the-board because of a possible $1-million/day fine for noncompliance.

Motorcycle and Car Collide

A car and a motorcycle collide but Des Moines police aren't sure if the driver of the car will face any charges. Word from police - the accident happened Sunday afternoon as a car was traveling eastbounf on Thornton and pulled onto Southeast 14th - directly in the path of the motorcycle that was headed south. No word on how serious the injuries were - the driver of the motorcycle and a passenger were taken to the hospital. The driver was taken in for questioning.

Immunize

As kids head back to school a report out from the Centers for Disease Control say even though most kindergartners are up to date with their vaccines federal immunization goals are still unmet. Word from the CDC the average number of kids who have been vaccinated for measles, mumps, and rubella is 94.8%. Health officials have set their target at greater than 95%.

Split Verdict in Pella Pastor Sex Case

A jury's found former Pella pastor Patrick Edouard guilty on four counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor, therapist, school employee or clergy, as well as having a pattern practice or scheme to sexually exploit. KCCI reports the jurors found Edoard nor guilty on three counts of third-degree sexual abuse. Four women at Covenant Reform Church in alleged he coerced them into having sexual relations.

East High Juvenile Busted

A 16-year-old East High student's been busted for carrying weapons and drug paraphernalia after he was spotted near the school with two other teens. The Des Moines Register reports the parents say one teen was semi-conscious. They say all three appeared to be under the influence is narcotics. The boy on the ground was taken to Broadlawns, the other to Mercy with an elevated heart rate. The weapon recovered-brass knuckles.

Lots of Charges for 140 mph Biker

Connor Dougherty's facing a long list of charges after his motorcycle ride yesterday that hit speeds of 140 mph. The 21-year old ignored pursuing police. The charges against him include speeding, eluding, careless driving and driving under suspension. He's being held in the Madison County Jail. The chase started in Madison County and ended north of Alleman when the bike ran out of gas.

Hy-Vee Employee Busted in Alleged Lottery Ticket Theft

Des Moines Police arrested Hy-Vee employee for second-degree theft after the store’s loss prevention unit called them in this morning. KCCI reports 50-year old Cynthia Manship of Prairie City's admitted to allegedly stealing lottery tickets from the store at 4605 Fleur Drive. The company's fired her. She'd worked for the chain since 20907. Hy-Vee believes the loss comes to just over $5400.

Pella Pastor

It's up to the jury now in the sexual assault trial of former Pella pastor Patrick Edouard. Prosecutors closed their case saying Edouard had taken advantage of women sexually by using his position as a pastor and that he had affairs with four members of his congretation. The defense claimed the affairs were consensual and the women cried foul because of the impact the affairs had on their families. Edouard is charged with eight counts of sexual abuse and sexual explotation.

Laced Licorice

Licorice Lovers listen up - The one pound packages of Red Vines Black Licorice twists have been recalled after The American Licorice Co. found they contain high levels of lead. The voluntary recall comes after the state Department of Public Health told consumers to toss the contaminated candy. The department says the licoricce contained as much as point three three (0.33) parts per million of lead - the concentration of lead could provide up to 13.2 micrograms of lead per serving - children under the age of six should not consume more than 6.0 micrograms of lead per day from all dietary sources. The recall only affects 16 ounce bags of Red Vines Black LIcorice twists - the date is printed on the back of the package - you're looking for the best before date of 02-04-13.

No King Vilsack ISU Debate

GOP Cong. Steve King and his Democratic challenger Christie Vilsack won't be having a debate at ISU next month. It's been scrapped because King wouldn't sign on to the debate sponsors format proposal. According to ABC5, King's campaign wanted to have the candidates question each other, but the events sponsors wanted a panel ask the candidates questions from constituents.

Ethics Panel Clears Rastetter

Iowa's Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board ruled today that State Board of Regents member Bruce Rastetter didn't violate ethics rules because of ISU's involvement in a Tanzanian land deal pursued by Rastetter's agriculture companies. According to the Des Moines Register, the group that pushed the ethics charge, Iowa Citizens for
Community Improvement, say they'll pursue this with the Regents and the Governor's office.

Paramedics Called to School for Student Having Possible Drug Reaction

Paramedics were called to East High this morning, after school officials say a student appeared to be having a bad reaction to a synthetic drug like K2. A school spokesperson says they called for help when the unidentified student couldn't get up out of a chair. Phil Roeder tells KCCI another student believed to be involved will face disciplinary action.

Motorcycle Chase in Polk County Tops 100 mph

Polk County authorities don't know what sparked a chase involving a motorcycle this afternoon that hit speeds of close to 1450 mph. Officers say the chase started near Carlisle north on the Hwy 65 bypass, west on I-80 and north on Hwy 35. Officers backed off when the bike left the interstate in Ankeny. The bike was finally stopped in Story County.

West Nile

A record number of West Nile virus infections are being reported in the United States- with numbers jumping more than 60 percent in the past week. Federal officials say this is one of the country's biggest-ever outbreaks of the disease. The virus was first detected in the United States in 1999, and the CDC says the worst U.S. outbreak happend in 2003, with close to 10 thousand cases reported and 264 deaths that year.

College Vote

Iowa's popular these days with politicos! As Mitt ROmney wraps up a trip to the Hawkeye state President Obama says he's coming back next week and he's headed to Iowa State University. The President and his Republican rival are seeking the college vote which seems is pretty hard to find - some ISU students told News Channel 8 - they haven't made up their minds, or they may not even vote. Just one third of people 18 to 21 voted in the last presidential election.

Man Rescued from River

A car chase ends with a man being rescued from the Des Moines River. The Des Moines Register reports police tried to pull over 34 year old Albert Lopez for traffic violations - but he drove off - then turned into a parking lot at Prospect Park and straight down an embankment into the river. Word from police - Lopez wouldn't swim to shore or grab a rescue rope - and when he started to struggle in the water police water rescue pulled him out.

Polk County Conservation Plan Goes to Voters in November

Polk County voters will decide in November yes or no to borrowing $50-million to pay for 20 years of improvements to trails, parks, rivers and streams. If voters approve, the Des Moines Register reports it'll mean an extra $9 more/year in property taxes on a house assessed at $100,000. Among the projects that could be funded- dredging and creek-bank stabilization projects at Thomas Mitchell, Fort Des Moines, Jester and Easter Lake parks.

SE Connector Extension Work Starts

Ground was broken this morning, and crews started tearing down several buildings for the extension of the Southeast Connector's 2-mile extension from SE 15th Street to SE 30th Street. KCCI reports work's already started on the Connector's link from Southwest 14th Street to SE 9th to link up with Martin Luther King Parkway running through the south side of downtown.

FBI Hopes New Reward Cracks Zywicki Murder Case

The FBI says it's hopeful a $50,000 reward will jog some information loose in the 1992 murder of Tammy Zywicki. She disappeared 20-years ago tomorrow along I-80 in LaSalle, Illinois. The 21-year old's body was found 9-days later in Joplin, Mo. Zywicki was on her way to college in Iowa from her home in New Jersey.

Stowe Offered Water Works Job

The Des Moines Water Works Board Trustees has voted to voted hire Bill Stowe as its new CEO. The board met this afternoon to hear the recommendation of its search committee. There were 5-finalists for the job: Patrick Ball, William Gilmore, Kirk Hobbs, Bill Stowe, and Jason Yarborough. Stowe's head of DM's Public Works Department. Current Water Works CEO and General Manager Randy Beavers is retiring September 7th.

DM Only Co-op Grocery Going Out of Business

The only grocery cooperative in the Des Moines area's closing Sunday. Talllgrass Grocery's Co-op board decided to shut down it's Valley Junction retail store last night. The store at 116 5th Street in West Des Moines, is selling all of its remaining inventory at 50% off. The store opened less than a year ago, and officials say the problem's been low sales levels.

SE Connector Groundbreaking Ceremony Tomorrow

They're breaking ground tomorrow to start of work on an extension of the Southeast Connector in downtown Des Moines, from SE 15th to SE 30th Street. KCCI reports Mayor Frank Cownie will wave a flag to signal the start of demolition of buildings near 1610 Scott Avenue. The project eventually run from SW 14th Street to SE 9th to the Martin Luther King Parkway on the south side of downtown.

Missing Girl's Mom Taken to Walterloo Area Hospital

Waterloo Police say the mom of one of the two missing Evansdale girls was hospitalized after she was found unresponsive at a relatives home yesterday. Misty Morrisey's the mother of 10-year old Lyric Cook who's been missing along with her cousin, 9-year old Elizabeth Collins, since July 13th. A relative says Morrisey had been drinking and 911 was called when they couldn't wake her up.

New DM Water Works CEO Could be Named Today

Des Moines Board of Water Works Trustees is expected to vote late this afternoon on a new CEO. A search committee's expected to make their recommendation to the board from the five candidates for the job. KCCI reports the candidates named earlier this year are Patrick Ball, William Gilmore, Kirk Hobbs, Bill Stowe, Jason Yarborough. Stowe heads Des Moines Public Works Department.

New Judges

Two new judges now sit on the district court bench in Iowa. Governor Terry Branstad has appointed Joel Dalrymple to the 2nd Judicial District, which covers 22 counties in central and northern Iowa. Dalrymple fills the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Thomas Bower to the Iowa Court of Appeals. Also on Monday the Governor appointed Gregg Rosenbladt as a district judge in the 1st Judicial District, that covers 11 counties in northeast Iowa. Rosenbladt will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Stephen Carroll.

Bed Bugs

Iowa’s veterans have seen a lot of battles but the latest one really gets under their skin. The Iowa Veterans Home–the largest nursing home exclusively for veterans and their spouses in the state–is waging a war against bed-bugs. For the last year the home has spent close to thrity thousand dollars fighting the tiny enemies - which can only be treated with expensive chemicals or heating the rooms to extreme temperatures. Working with a pest control company is where they are now in the battle - but it's tough with the number of residents who live there and the vistors that come and go there's always a chance the enemy will return

Sympathy Shooting

Ten years in prison is what a Western Iowa man is facing after trying to arrange to have someone shoot him not once but twice - all in an effort to gain sympathy from his ex-wife. Prosecutors dropped some of the charges against Darren Hieber, of Mapleton, after he agreed to plead guilty to one charge of conspiracy and two counts of solicitation for the shootings. On February 5th Heiber told police he had been shot in the leg by a burglar - he accused of actually persuading an employee from his trucking business to shoot him. He is also accused of hiring two men from Nebraska to shoot at him in March. There were no injuries in that shooting - the three gunmen have been given probation

Wind Turbine Maker With Iowa Plant Cutting Jobs

Clipper Windpower, which has a wind turbine plant in Cedar Rapids, is eliminating 174 jobs. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the company's downsizing in response to challenges facing the industry. After the cuts, the company's workforce will be down to 376 jobs. A spokesperson says they won't be shutting down any plants, and they don't know yet how many of the cuts will be made in Cedar Rapids.

New School Year Brings Lunch Menu Changes

If you have children going back to public school, they'll see changes in their lunch menus. KCCI reports new rules require more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthier main dishes. In Waukee, officials say the changes include lowering the among of sodium in meals over the next decade, and for the first time setting maximum on the number of calories in meals.

Elle Magazine's the latest with something great to say about Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports this month's edition of Elle lists Salon Spa W, in the East Village, as one of the top 100 hair and beauty salons in the country. China Wong's Salon Spa W's gone from 3 to 17-employees in the 6-years it's been open, and had 20% growth every year despite the recession.

Police Say Union County Shootings Domestic Incident

Authorities in Union County say they're investigating, but not looking for other suspects in last night's shootings of 60-year old Ronald and 52-year old Laura Maxfield-Anderson in their tome. According to KCCI, police are calling the gunfire the result of a domestic dispute. Both were airlifted to a Des Moines Hospital.

Lottery Mystery

Are you the unknown millionaire? Iowa lottery officials are searching for a 14 million dollar jackpot winner - the catch is the person won the ticket over a year and a half ago. An attorney from New York did step forward just hours before the prize expired claiming to represent the buyer in a trust - but wouldn't say who the buyer was and when the lottery refused to pay the claim was withdrawn. Lottery officials may release video that shows the person originally buying the ticket.

Car Flipped

Des Moines police looking into an accident Sunday night after a woman hit a light pole then flipped her car into the front yard of a house in the 2300 block of East 42nd street. Word from witnesses - they pulled the driver out and she wasn't hurt too badly. She was taken to the hospital to get checked out. Still no word on the cause of the accident.

Non-Profit CHarges

Raising money is getting expensive. Charity organizations wanting to use Des Moines' popular recreational trails in fund-raiser will now have to pay a price. The city says the 250 dollar charge is an effort to regain the costs that come with events - like heavier toilet use and bigger amounts of trash. Non-profit organizers contend taxpayers already fund the parks and trails and group use doesn't cost the cities anything extra. The are other trails, in other cities in the metro area that don't charge.


Arson Trial

No trial for a Des Moines woman who is charged with first degree arson. Thirty two year old Lesley Duckworth is accused of setting her mother in law's house on fire and was schedule to go on trial today. After changing her plea last week from not guilty to guilty of a lesser charge of second degree arson the trial was scrapped. Word from fire officials Duckworth lit paper and other materials on fire in her mother-in-law's basement after an argument. Sentencing is cheduled for next month.

Olmypic welcome home


A great welcome home for our Iowan Olympians with about 5 thousand people gathering at Drake Knapp Center. Lisa Uhl part of the track Team, Jake Varner who won a gold in wrestling, along with Gabby Douglas, Lolo Jones who say after a rest they are heading back into the gym and Archer Miranda Leek who is off to college were all in attendance raving about their Olympic experience.

The Iowa Ruby Brigade meets tomorrow at 6pm at Goldsmith's. This organization for anyone who studies and uses the programming language Ruby and Ruby on Rails. They meet monthly to discuss the topic.

need for food programs

Our kids are back in school for the most part and agencies are working hard to ensure that they all have enough to eat. The food Bank of Iowa backpack program started in 2006 and provided food for 24 students. That number is now more than 2500 students. Booster pak works with the organization to help cover the need in Wes Des Moines schools. They are extended their program into Valley Southwoods this year. The Booster pak program serves about 90 kids.

East High Football Still Recovering

East High School is grateful they don't have their first home football game until next Friday. They're still recovering from the fire at their stadium that destroyed the locker room, showers, offices, and all the teams gear. KCCI reports there's been a huge outpouring of public and private support from the community with equipment and cash to recover. Investigators are still looking into the fire which they believe was arson.

Heemstra Case May Finally Be Settled

A judge today ordered Rodney Heemstra to fork over almost $4.1-million to Rhonda Lyon to settle a wrongful death suit in the killing of her husband Tom. Heemstra was ordered to pay a $5.8-million judgment a few years ago. KCCI reports he's fought paying it for almost a decade. A judge's ordered the issue be settled by the end of this year. Heemstra shot Tom Lyon in a dispute over land.

Clive Backs Off Single Family Occupancy Change

After strong words from one resident in opposition, Clive's City Council tweaked a proposed change in its residential occupancy regulations to allow three unrelated people to live together in a single-family home. The Des Moines Register reports earlier versions would have cut that to two. Current zoning regs allow as many as 5. The Council put off a final vote until the end of the month to think it over and hear from more residents.

Federal Appeals Court Rejects Effort to Block More Ethanol in Gasoline

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit's rejected an effort by the trade associations of engine makers, food producers and petroleum producers to block EPA decisions to raise the blend of ethanol tin gasoline to 15% for light duty vehicles made since 2001. The court ruled the trade groups has no standing to sue, since they couldn't prove their members had been harmed by the EPA decisions.

Kidnap Try Reported in Waukee

Waukee Police are investigating a 5th grader's report that a man in a purple van tried to kidnap her this morning while waiting for her school bus on Ashworth Road. KCCI reports the van's driver got out, approached the girl and told her to get in. She ran back home. The driver's described as a black male in his 30's, black shoes, a long gold trench coat, black hat and red rimmed sunglasses.

WDM PD After User of Stolen Credit Card

West Des Moines Police need your help trying to get a name for a woman suspected of forgery, who used a credit card, stolen in a home burglary at Des Moines metro Stores. Police say she's a heavyset white female, seen in surveillance video, wearing a long sleeve black sweater, black pants and sunglasses. There's a $1,000 reward for information from Polk County Crime Stoppers. Call 515-223-1400.

Burkle Takes Plea, Gets 50-years

Jackie Burkle of Huxley's pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in a plea deal with the Story County D.A., and has been sentenced to two 50-year concurrent prison terms. Burkle was charged with first degree murder for the deaths of her new born twin girls, their bodies found in the trunk of her car. KCCI reports Burkle said nothing during today's hearing.

Former Officer in Trouble Again

Back to jail for a former Des Moines police officer. Brandon Singleton made news in July when he said yes to a plea deal after a hit and run accident that also involved police finding drugs in his car. Singleton was picked up early Thursday on charges of failure to diplay front and back license plates, probation violation, drug paraphernalia and carrying weapons. There's also a misdemeanor charge he's facing for a domestic abuse incident from June.

Pastor Accused

Testimony continues today in the trial of a former Pella pastor accused of sexual abuse as a third accuser takes the stand. Patrick Edouard is charged with three counts of third-degree sexual abuse and four counts of sexual exploitation by a counselor, therapist, school employee or clergy. The latest accuser says Eduouard raped her at his home during a scheduled counseling session and then placed a phone call to her the next day. The defense says the woman's statement and her phone records don't jibe.

Rain Expected with Cold Front Moving In

Rain's expected to move into the state tonight through tomorrow. KCCI's reporting a cold front's expected to trigger thunderstorms and possible severe weather starting tonight. The National Weather Service forecasters said damaging winds will be the primary threat though large hail will also be possible. Temperatures will be coming down, with tomorrow's high in the mid 70's.

Bentz Wins Runoff for Ankeny City Council

There'll soon be a new face on Ankeny's City Council. 33-year old Bobbi Bentz won yesterday's runoff election to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Craig Block. The Des Moines Register reports the election results are expected to be certified by Polk County Supervisors on the 21st, and that's when Bentz will assume office. Her term will expire in 2015.

DM Animal Rights Group Wants Max for Urbandale Animal Cruelty Case

A Des Moines animal rights group's collected 2,000 signatures on a petition demanding that Polk County prosecutors go for the maximum jail time for 18-year old Luis Lara-Leyva of Urbandale. He's charged with animal cruelty for June's death of a German Shepherd from dehydration on a 91-degree day. The Des Moines Register reports the charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum year in jail and an $1,875 fine.

Boil Water Advisory for Boone

A water main break in Boone's left residents with a headache--a boil water advisory. KCCI report's it's because of a water main break this morning on Mamie Eisenhower Avenue. The city says it's worried about possible bacterial contamination. The advisory applies to the city and some customers in Xenia. Once the main's fixed, the lines will be flushed and testing done to make sure the water's safe.

Sioux City Takes Step on Land Based Casino

The City Council in Sioux City's approved a municipal code change that will for the first time allow a land based casino. The council actions covers a 462-acres in downtown. Among the requirements-no demolition of historic buildings, as well as specific rules on parking and building design. The state legalized riverboat gambling in 1989 and land-based casinos in 2007.

DM PD and Sheriff Looking to Share More Resources

Des Moines City Council's given a green like to the city's police sitting down with the Polk County Sheriff’s office to find ways to share resources and facilities. The Des Moines Register reports one of those ideas will be to work together on a new radio dispatch system that would share the same infrastructure. DM PD's expected to need a new radio dispatch system by 2022.

Hy-Vee's Largest Grocery Store Open in Urbandale

Hy-Vee's officially opened the largest grocery store in its history today in Urbandale. The store at 8701 Douglas is 95,000 square feet, with several Des Moines Metro firsts-including a full service restaurant with servers, wines, and craft beers, sushi bar, coffee shop/lounge, fruit and juice bar, breakfast oatmeal bar, and wood fired pizza.

DM PD Investigating Parking Lot Death

Des Moines Police are investigating the death of a man found slumped over behind the wheel of his car in a parking lot outside First United Methodist Church this morning. Investigators tell KCCI there were no signs of foul play. The Polk County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine how the as yet unidentified man died.

5-years for Woman in Texting While Driving Crash

A Black Hawk County judge's sentenced Jennifer Moeller of Holland to 5-years in prison for a hit and run crash with a motorcycle, that police say was caused by her texting while driving. Moeller pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident. The bike rider, Joan Nicolson, lost part of her left leg. Police say Moeller drove 10-miles on a flat tire after the crash, and hid her car in a barn.

Iowa Trying to Reboot FIlm Office After Scandal

After the Iowa FIlm Office scandal, which sent several people to prison, the state's moving to rebuild efforts to attract the industry here. KCCI reports the legislature set aside $200,000 for the current budget year, but there will be no tax credit program and no financial incentives to film producers if they decide to do business in Iowa. The Governor had asked for $400,000.

Guv Says Legislature Must Resolve Issue of Public Money for Abortions for Rape Incest and Fetal Issues

Gov. Branstad says the legislature will have to deal with the dispute over public money being used to pay for abortions in cases of rape, incest or fetal abnormalities. He says he doesn't think lawmakers have given him the legal power to order an end to taxpayer funding. He also says not covering abortions in those three specific situations would violate federal funding requirement and jeopardize the $2-billion plus the state gets for Medicaid.

Claims Management Firm Could Bring New Jobs to Iowa

Sedgwick Claims Management, which helps businesses manage employee benefit claims, plans on building a $40,000 sq. ft. building near the U of I Research Campus. KCCI reports the project, which could mean 200 new jobs, is tied to Sedgwick getting job training and economic development incentives from Coralville and the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Both are expected to consider incentives for Sedgwick this week.

Investigators Think Missing Evansdale Girls Are Still Alive

Investigators say they believe the two Evansdale girls, now been missing for a month, are still alive. Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins disappeared July 13th. Their bicycles were found at a lake. An FBI spokesperson wouldn't discuss leads or say whether they think the two were taken for ransom, by a relative or someone else.

DCI Agent Assigned to Investigate Potential Voter Fraud

An Iowa DCI agent's been assigned to Secretary of State Matt Schultz's office to look into cases of potential voter fraud. KCCI reports officials say the agent's told them he's looking into 2,000 plus voters. Schultz's office says many could be data errors, but the Secretary of State's promised to prove there's voter fraud in Iowa to support his push for a voter ID law.

Iowa State Fair Shuts Down PETA's Booth

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Iowa State Fair have parted ways. PETA says the Fair shut down its' booth over complaints about profanity in a video they were showing. According to KCCI, PETA says Fair officials saw, and approved the video, showing meat-trade workers that PETA says abused animals on factory farms. PETA wants the Fair to refund their $1,050 booth fee.

Ex DM Councilman and Dem State Chair Busted for OWI

Former Des Moines City councilman and Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Michael Kiernan was arrested early this morning for OWI near 26th and Ingersoll. Des Moines Police say they observed Kiernan swerving and ignoring a stop sign. KCCI reports is BAC was .126. Kiernan's listed as current vice-chair of the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee.

Bondurant Joins Bravo Grtr Des Moines

Thunderstorms Rolling Throiugh DM Metro

Thunderstorms have been making their way through the Des Moines metro this afternoon, and more are expected through late tonight. Some of those storms are packing winds of 50-to-60 mph, and some of those storms have been dropping quarter to half-dollar sized hail.

Vegetation Fires in 2012 Already Top All of 2010

The State Fire Marshal says we've had more vegetation fires in the first 6 months of this year than all of 2010, and are close to the number for all of last year. The Des Moines Register reports that's despite burn bans in 66-counties, except Polk. Authorities have been issuing citations for ban violations, and they expect to issue more as the drought continues.

Branstad Thinks State Gas Tax Hike Can Pass in 2013

Gov. Branstad says he thinks the 2013 legislature could back a hike in the state gasoline tax to generate revenue for road projects. Branstad also predicted possible public support for raising the tax by 8-to-10-cents/gallon over three years, if the increase is tied to lower property and income taxes. The gas tax hike was floated last year, but went nowhere.

Iowa DOT to Windsor-No Speed Cams on I-235

Iowa DOT's denied a Windsor Heights request to install automated speed cams on I-235 between 63rd and 73rd streets. Cameras have already been installed in Des Moines eastbound at 42nd Street. KCCI reports the state suggested other options, including ramp metering at the 63rd Street westbound entrance ramp, as well as an increased State Patrol presence. The City says it will appeal.

Area police agencies will be busy Friday with a beefed up traffic enforcement targeting impaired drivers in eastern Polk County. KCCI reports it's the work of the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. Police say if you're planning to drink Friday night, choose a designated driver , don't drink and drive.

Valley High Taking Donatrions for East High Football Friday

Valley High School's football team will accept donations for East High School during its annual fall scrimmage Friday afternoon at 5 at Valley Stadium on Civic Mills Parkway. Valley's booster club is asking spectators to bring a donation that'll go to the recovery of East High School Stadium, damaged in a fire last week. East High's football team lost all its' equipment in that fire.

ACLU Concerned About Church Hosting WDM Public School Classes

Iowa's ACLU's expressed concerns over West Des Moines plan to hold pubic school classes at a Lutheran church while construction work's finished at Hillside Elementary. An ACLU spokesperson tells KWWL officials for both involved parties have to make sure students don't get religious instruction or religious pressure. The school district says it's made that very clear to church leaders.

DM At Low End of Adults Moving Back Home in Recession

The Des Moines Metro's at the bottom of a new list. The Atlantic reports an Ohio State University study ranked Des Moines No. 100 for the number of adults living with their parents during the great recession. KCCI reports the number was 8%. A researcher found three reasons for adult kids moving back home: delay of marriage, money problems, and low educational attainment.

Indianola Attempted Kidnapping Didn't Happen

Indianola Police say the two girls who reported an attempted kidnapping last night made the whole thing up. Authorities say they found several things that didn't match up in the statements made by the 11 and 14 year old girls involved. When confronted, the children admitted they made it up; telling police they wanted to play a joke on a relative. No charges are expected,

Hillside Elementary Students Start Year at Lutheran Church of Hope

Hillside Elementary in West Des Moines will start the school year with classes at Lutheran Church of Hope. The construction being done at the school isn't finished yet. They've been replacing the windows, they leak, and the water damage also led to mold, which has already been addressed. The school isn't expected to be ready until 8-to-10-weeks after the school year starts.

Water Use Continues Falling in DM Metro

Des Moines metro water use has continued to drop since hitting new record levels in late July. Des Moines Water Works says Sunday's use was 58.2-million gallons. The Des Moines Register reports Saturday's rain didn't do much to bring up water levels in the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers. Water Works is asking its customers to continue voluntary conservation efforts.

Job Fair at Wellmark Thursday Sponsored by NAACP

41-employers are expected at a Thursday job fair here in Des Moines. The event's sponsored by the Des Moines Chapter of the NAACP , and it's Thursday at Wellmark from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. KCCI reports there will also be workshops on resume and cover letter writing, job and career preparedness and mock interviews. Not Much to Love in New Crop Report

A new crop report says overall conditions continue to get worse despite some heavy rain last week. Topsoil moisture levels improved slightly to 66% very short, 27%, 7% adequate. Corn conditions 20% very poor, 29% poor, 35% fair, 15% good, and 1% excellent. KCCI reports last week corn was 18% very poor, 28% poor, 34% fair, 19% good and 1% excellent.

Branstad Says Spiker Didn't Discuss Wiggins With Him

Gov. Branstad says GOP State Chair A.J. Spiker didn't consult him before issuing a call last week for voters to remove State Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins in November. Spiker wants Wiggins out for voting to overturn the state ban on gay marriage. Branstad says Spiker has the same right any citizen has to express an opinion on issues. The Governor says he won't weigh in on the Wiggins retention. "

Authorities Come Up Empty in New Lake Area Search for Evansdale Girls

An FBI spokesperson says investigators returned to Meyers Lake today, checking on leads in the disappearance of two Evansdale girls who've now been missing for three weeks. The Bureau says there were no positive results. Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins went missing July 13th while riding their bikes.

Police Wonder if Three Cab Robberies are Linked

Urbandale and Des Moines Police are trying to figure out of the robberies of three cabbies in the past two days have any connection. The most recent was early this morning when a cabbie was ribbed at gunpoint after giving three men a ride from Clive to Urbandale. Shots were fired in two robberies. Police think three young men were involved in each incident.

Community Stepping Up to Support East High's Football Team

The help's been rolling in since a fire wiped out all of East High School's football team's gear. KCCI reports Powers MFG in Waterloo's donated 236 pairs of practice pants, 47 game jerseys and 133 practice jerseys . Athletic Director Ric Powell says people ave been walking in and donating money since Wednesday. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

UNI President Retiring

UNI President Ben Allen's retiring as of July 1st of next year. Allen's had a busy year, that included cutting about 20% of academic programs, buying out more than 40 tenured faculty, and shutting down the Malcolm Price Laboratory School, where student teachers received training. The Des Moines Register reports it was done to close a $5-million budget hole.

Ex DM Schools Chief Says District Taking Too Long to Produce Records

Former Des Moines Schools Chief Nancy Sebring says the district's been dragging its heels responding to requests for emails she says will explain context of her resignation in May. Sebring's made public records requests for her own emails as well as those from board members and the district's attorney. Sebring says she's been asked by someone she won't identify, for details about her leaving the Des Moines job and giving up the Omaha Superintendent's post.

Alliant Making Big Investment to Generate More Electricity

Alliant Energy creating several hundred construction jobs as part of a bigger project to boost its' ability to produce electricity. KCCI reports the biggest part of the plan is Alliant's expansion of its Marshalltown power plant, at a cost of up to $750-million. A spokesperson says the project should be finished and be on line by 2017.

Competency Hearing Ordered for Kevin Dalasta

Kevin Dalasta may never stand trial for a 2010 car crash that killed two children. A judge has ordered a competency hearing for him. He's charged with two counts of homicide and two counts of serious injury by vehicle. Police say he ran a stop sign and broadsided a van killing 5-year old Carson and 5-month old Claire DeJoode. That hearing's Aug. 30.

Black Mold at Terrace Hill

Gov. Branstad and his family have moved out of Terrace Hill, the Governor's Mansion. Black mold's been found on the building's 3rd floor. Branstad says he and his wife hadn't been feeling well for about a month, and an investigation found the mold. No word on how long cleanup will take. Black mold's associated with chronic fatigue symptoms, headaches, fever, sneezing, rashes and chronic coughing; and usually follows water damage.

Mailbox Bombs Reported in Urbandale

Urbandale Police say they've had two cases of homemade pop bottle bombs in mailboxes. KCCI reports both were on the west side and did damage, but fortunately no one was hurt. The incidents last Thursday and Friday are being looked into by police and U.S. Postal Inspectors. Anyone with information should call police at 515-331-6803

East High Stadium Fire Suspicious

Investigators now say the fire that destroyed football equipment and locker rooms at Des Moines' East High Stadium last night was suspicious. KCCI reports investigators are looking into reports someone entered the stadium before the fire. Witnesses have reported seeing 2-cars leave the south parking lot just before the fire. School officials say the damaged gear and ruined equipment are covered by insurance.

DM PD Viewing Surveillance Video of Credit Union Hold Up

Des Moines PD are viewing surveillance video trying to identify a suspect in this afternoons robbery at Edco Credit Union on 38th Street. The Des Moines Register reports the suspect was wearing sunglasses, a dark blue shirt, a navy baseball cap and gray or navy blue jogging pants, and may have a beard or mustache. He got away with an undisclosed amount of money and left on foot.

State GOP After Wiggins Over Same Sex Ruling

Iowa's GOP Chairman A.J. Spiker's calling on voters to vote not to retain State Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins in November. Wiggins is one of the 7 who voted to toss the state ban on same-sex marriage in 2009. Spiker called Wiggins an activist judge. Wiggins issued a statement saying in part: "Two of the branches of government are designed to be political. It's unfortunate Mr. Spiker apparently thinks that all three branches should be political."

East High Football Team Gear and Locker Room Destroyed by Fire

Football practice's supposed to start Monday at Des Moines East High School, but there's no gear for the team. A fire destroyed the schools locker rooms and equipment last night. KCCI reports helmets-at $280 each, were melted by the flames, the teams pads and uniforms are also gone. DM Water Works Sets New One Month Record Use in July

Des Moines Water Works says the metro area used a record 2.54-billion gallons of water last month. The old record, 2.23-billion, was set in June of 2008. Last week, KCCI reports Water Works officials put their Stage 1 water conservation plan in effect after single day use hit 90.7-million gallons. Since then, use has fallen to 66-75 million gallons per day.
