A coalition of education groups say Gov. Branstad's plan to freeze state spending on local schools would force more than 1,500 layoffs. KCCI reports the Iowa Association of School Boards, School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa State Education Association, Area Education Agencies, the Urban Education Network and the Parent Teacher Association say the layoffs would happen as the state is just starting to turn the corner on the recession.
