EEE Virus in Massachusetts

The deadly Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has been found in mosquito samples in Berkshire County Massachusetts for the first time ever. The county does extensive trapping of mosquitos and have never found it in Western Massachusetts before and where it is found, it is usually found much later in the summer. Officials are warning the public to be aware of the situation and try not to be bitten by mosquitos. The disease has a 35% mortality rate when contracted. No cases of infection in humans have been reported this summer.
