Private First Class A-Jay Irelan is supposed to be back in Iowa this weekend after an entire year at war in Afghanistan. Days before his return, his home was destroyed by fire. Irelan’s house caught fire early Wednesday morning in the town of Dexter, about a half hour west of Des Moines. His girlfriend Erin Richey was at work and her son was out of the house. Several pets died in the fire. Irelan knows about the fire -- Richey was able to talk with him partway through his trip home and let him know. 28-hundred of the 29-hundred Iowa soldiers that left for Afghanistan a year ago are coming home today.
