City steps back from Valley High School's historic barn issue

The city of West Des Moines won't help the school district with barn rennovations at Valley High School. The city council voted against giving the school the storm water detention exemption, and they're not chipping in the funds needed to save the barn. The district says that in order to save the barn as it expands the school, it must turn the basin into green space for physical education or move the basin underground, which would cost about $1 million. Several council members argued that in a $60 million renovation project, the district should be able to find the $1 million it needs to resolve the storm water problem while saving the barn.
