Branstad Outside Counsel

Iowa taxpayers will pay as much as $435 an hour, for lawyers to defend Gov. Branstad in against a suit alleging the shut down of 36-unemployment offices was unconstitutional. The attorney general usually handles litigation for the state, but when outside counsel's needed, the going rate, according to Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, a democrat, is $80/hour. The Governor convinced the Executive Council by a 3-1 vote to let him hire outside attorney's for the lawsuit.
