Woman Sues Mercy Over Lack of Communication

Polly Fullbright said she is suing against Mercy Medical Center after her husband died there because the hearing impaired couple was not provided someone to help them communicate when he was brought to the hospital. Fullbright told KCCI TV that she asked for an interpreter several times when they went to the hospital in 2008, and she said she was told the hospital was working on getting one. She said her husband died a short time after arriving at the hospital and while Fullbright has no concerns about his care, the couple could not communicate with anyone. KCCI reports that the hospital said in a statement "Mercy provided a monthly average of 127 hours of in-person sign language interpretation, despite a severe shortage of Iowa-licensed sign language interpreters."
