WDM PD Wanrt to ID Pair Offering Boy Ride Home

West Des Moines police want your help in putting names to two men who allegedly approached a 10-year old boy Monday evening in the 5400 block of Cody Drive and offered to take him home in their van if he was lost. The Des Moines Register says the two, possibly in their 40's or 50's, were in a white van with an orange fur-material on the steering wheel and a driver's seat with a black cover and white polka dots. The van was white and had painted over blue lettering. Contact WDM police at 515-222-3320.

Blessing of the Animals Sunday in WDM

Sunday is the interfaith Blessing of the Animals at the Biddell Shelter at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines. It starts at 1p.m. and is sponsored by The Pet Project Midwest. Organizers have a few requests: Only well-behaved animals on a leash or in a carrier, a maximum two animals per person over the age of 18.One pet per for kids 13 to 18 years old. Animals must be under the control of their human at all times, and be at least six months old, spayed or neutered.

Daniel Trial Now Scheduled for January

The trial of a Fort Dodge businessman accused of making an improper donation to the re-election campaign of former Gov. Chet Culver's been pushed back to January. Steve Daniel's charged with making a campaign contribution in someone else's name and willful failure to disclose a campaign contribution. Although a $25,000 donation's been the basis for the case, Daniel's attorney says his client donated $11,000 in three separate contributions.

DM PD Catch Suspect on Metro's Most Wanted

Des Moines police arrested one of the metro's most wanted last night. Travon Epps has been on the run since June 2010, when he escaped from a hospital after breaking his leg in a three floor fall trying to get away from police. He's in Polk County Jail, on a $58,000 bond.

Child Saves Mom With 911 Call

Police say a 4-year old boy's call to 911 saved his mothers life. KCCI reports a Polk County dispatcher got the call from the boy after his mom lost consciousness. Police say the Urbandale youngster knew what to do because he was taught how to call 911, and knew his home address. Authorities say the child was calm during the 14 minute call. Dispatchers used cellphone tracking technology to locate them. The mother's doing OK.

Lyons Gets 2 Yrs Probation

The former president of the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board has been sentenced to two years probation after he lied on a voter registration form. The form specifically asks about felony convictions and illegally voting in local elections and 50 year old Patrick pleaded guilty to lying on the form. Lyons was arrested last April and quit the school board when he was found out. Turns out that in 1996 he had a theft conviction in Polk county and was not eligible to vote or run for public office.

Baby, Don't Wait!

Some people have no patience! Neither did this young lady. Janelle Herman of Charles City was riding to the hospital with her daughter and son-in-law for her grandchild's birth, when the youngon' wouldn't wait So it was Dr. Grandma to the rescue. Janelle told Matt Grady to pull over at a car wash in Mason city, and there, she delivered her granddaughter Reis. Mom Tara and dad Matt are fine, and big brother Carson has a story to tell kindergarten classmates.

Winterset Facing Drought

The city of Winterset is considering putting its drought plan into action. That's because the city is facing a drought emergency. The level of Cedar Lake, which supplies Winterset's water, has dropped to the lowest levels in five years. City officials said Winterset hasn't had any significant rain in nearly three months. They say the lake's level drops about a inch a day. Officials say residents should use common sense when using water: don't let it run when you brush your teeth, don't wash cars, water lawns -- basically, be more conservative than you're bing now.

Former Fort Dodge Officer Pleads Not Guilty

A former Fort Dodge police officer said he did not do it. The Messenger in Fort Dodge reports that 46-year-old Galen Hindt pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and extortion. he's accused of the crime against a woman last April and resigned from the department. The victim claims the two met at a bar, and when she wouldn't accompany him, she said Hindt threatened to arrest her for drunk driving. She said he then drove her to his apartment where he's accused of sexually assaulting her.

Woman Sues Mercy Over Lack of Communication

Polly Fullbright said she is suing against Mercy Medical Center after her husband died there because the hearing impaired couple was not provided someone to help them communicate when he was brought to the hospital. Fullbright told KCCI TV that she asked for an interpreter several times when they went to the hospital in 2008, and she said she was told the hospital was working on getting one. She said her husband died a short time after arriving at the hospital and while Fullbright has no concerns about his care, the couple could not communicate with anyone. KCCI reports that the hospital said in a statement "Mercy provided a monthly average of 127 hours of in-person sign language interpretation, despite a severe shortage of Iowa-licensed sign language interpreters."

One Killed Near Runnels Today

Polk County Sheriff's deputies said one person was killed early this morning in a crash near Runnels. The crash was reported just after 4 a.m. when two vehicles crashed on Highway 316, north of Runnels. A second person was seriously hurt and flown to a Des Moines hospital.

Ethanol Production Heading Lower

U.S. ethanol production's dropped to its' lowest levels in more than four months. Some processors have slowed operations for seasonal maintenance; but some analysts say this could also be about near record corn prices. The Energy Department says the week of September 16th, production was about 36.3-million gallons/day. AG professional reports government forecasts show the industry set for the first annual drop in production in over a decade.

Polk County Property Taxes Due

The Polk County Treasurer’s Office's opening a temporary satellite office where you can make property tax payments. It'll be at River Place, 2309 Euclid Ave. in Des Moines, on Thursday and Friday. The Des Moines Register reports Friday's the last day to make property tax payments in person without late interest. The easiest way is to pay on line: www.IowaTaxAndTags.gov. Mailed payments must be postmarked no later than Sept. 30 to avoid the late penalty.

Judge Declares Mistrial in Iowa City Murder Case

A mistrial's ended the murder case against 19-year old Charles Thompson. A judge ended proceedings after the jury was shown part of a videotaped police interview with Thompson that was supposed to have been edited to remove references to an earlier incident investigated in Michigan. It hadn't been edited. KCCI reports prosecutors are expected to try Thompson again for the 2009 murder of an Iowa City landlord.

Luttrell Family Mad About "Ticket"

Remember when Frank Luttrell was killed as he kept kids safe crossing the street to go to school in Ankney? Now his family wants those who run red lights that kill people to suffer stronger penalties. The man who ran a red light, killing Luttrell was issued a citation for running the light. The 78 year old Luttrell was killed about two weeks ago when he was hit by a pick up truck at the intersection where he was acting as a crossing guard. Laurin Cole said he ran the light because the sun was in his eyes. Cole was not charged in Luttrell's death. Luttrell said Cole was not impaired in anyway, and should have been charged with more than the traffic violation. A family spokeswoman said Luttrell's family may sure Cole in civil court.

Ames Park and Rec Gets $1.6M

The Ames Parks and Recreation Department now has more than one and a half million dollars. That's because when 81 year old Geitel Winakor died, she left the money to the department. Winakor was a retired Iowa State University professor who died on August 15 of this year. Ames city officials said the city council will determine how best to use the money, with advice from parks and rec.

ISU To Announce New Prez Today

Iowa State University's website says the Iowa Board of Regents is scheduled to interview the two finalists today. The meeting will include introductions of and opening statements from finalists Steven Leath and Kumble Subbaswamy. The board will go into closed sessions for interviews of the finalists and deliberation. The Iowa Board of Regents will convene in open session at 4 p.m. today to announce and introduce Iowa State's next president.

Watts Owes Lots

If you think you're in debt to the IRS, how 'bout this guy: James Watts of Bettendorf owes the government more than 30 million dollars in federal taxes. The Press-Citizen reports that Watts owes a bunch of wast management companies, and that he has not paid federal employment and unemployment taxes. He withheld them from his employees' paychecks, but didn't pay them to the IRS. Watts' attorney made no comment to the newspaper, but court documents indicate that the back taxes are owed from companies in which he was involved, but that are now nonexistent.

More Iowans Getting Food Help

Lots of people in Iowa are hungry, and the state confirms that, saying nearly 400 thousand Iowans got some kind of food assistance last month. All over the state, more and more people are heading to food banks or getting food stamps to make groceries. In Cedar Rapids, Linn Community Food Bank reports that it served almost 30 percent more families so far this year over last year. Reports indicate that more people in Iowa are getting food help than those on a national level.

Lights Flashing, No Recording of Toney's Crash

New information in Iowa State Trooper Mark Toney's death: KCCI is reporting that investigators said that Toney was not on a call, but that witnesses reported seeing the flashing lights on his cruiser. Investigators say that when those lights are flashing, the dash cam is automatically activated. But, they say, there is no audio and no video from Toney's in car camera. Toney's visitation is today.

Pharmacist Gets Three Plus Years

He defrauded Medicaid and his own insurance company out of 200 thousand dollars and so now, 58 year old pharmacist, David Easton of Everly will do more than three years. Easton pleaded to one count of money laundering, one of aggravated identity theft, and two of healthcare fraud. He admitted that he cheated both Coventry health Care and Medicaid from 2003 to 2006. Easton will not only do the time, but have to pay back 165 thousand dollars to Medicaid and 35 thousand to Coventry.

Council Bluffs Man Gets 30 Years

He's 33 now, and has been sentenced to 30 years for killing another man. Christopher Hyde of Council Bluffs pleaded guilty to the March 8 killing of 44 year old Robert Chapin the Third of Omaha, in Council Bluffs. The two got into an argument, which led to the shooting. The deal with prosecutors was that Hyde plead guilty to willful injury, intimidation with a weapon and assault while participating in a felony. He was given ten years for each count.

Obama 2012 Opens Iowa Offices

President Barack Obama's Des Moines campaign office is now open on Second Street. There are eight Obama re-election offices in the Hawkeye State that all opened yesterday. Those who were there for then candidate Obama, are there for the President now, reopening campaign offices. Before Obama was elected four years ago, there were 110 thousand more Democrats than Republicans in Iowa. Now, there are about 34 thousand more Dems.

2 Killed, 2 Hurt in WDM Crash

Two people were killed and two were hospitalized in a crash in West Des Moines yesterday. It happened at Jordan Creek Parkway and Westown Parkway about 2:35 p.m. Police said a semi was southbound on Jordan Creek Parkway when it collided with a car turning out of Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

Univ of Iowa Gets $1M

The University of Iowa has a one million dollar commitment for an undergrad writing center. It will be named for the late Frank N Magid -- the Frank N. Magid Undergraduate Writing Center. he received his bachelors and master's degrees from the university, and then taught there, and his wife Marilyn gave the funds to the university's college of Liberal Arts to establish the center.

Body Found in Cedar Rapids is Missing Man

Cedar Rapids police found the body of a missing 46 year old man. They got a call of a body in the northeastern part of the city, in a wooded area and said, after an investigation, that it was that of John Margellos who was reported missing last Friday. Police say no foul play is suspected, and they call it an unattended death.

$16.5M Hot Lotto Ticket Still not Turned

Time is running out for a would-be lucky person or people holding a Hot Lotto ticket. Iowa Lottery officials say the winning ticket, worth 16.5 million dollars, was bought at a QuikTrip concenience store in Des Moines and the drawing was held on last December 29. That means that whoever has that ticket will lose all the money if the ticket isn't turned in by 4 p.m. on December 29 of this year. All that money -- gone, forfieted, given back to the lottery so somebody else could win it. Now do you really want that? Okay, so Hot Lotto is played in the District of Columbia, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia. Kid Busted on Several Counts

There's a kid in trouble with just more than mom and dad. An eleven year old Waterloo boy allegedly started a fire that damaged a patrol car and then tried to take an officer's gun. The police report says it happened Thursday in Gates Park and the boy was arrested for second degree arson, and once they took him in, he ripped out a microphone in the cruiser and went for an officer's gun, but couldn't get from its holster. So now the juvenile is also charged with trying to disarm an officer. He's in juvie in Black Hawk County.

Man Killed in Work-Related Accident

What caused an industrial accident in northeastern Iowa that killed a man? That's what Floyd County investigators are looking into. They said it havened Saturday afternoon when 60 year old Dennis Knecht got trapped under a skid loader at an excavation site near Colwell.

State Grant for Des Moines Biz Incubator

The Iowa Economic Development board's decided to give $250,000 over three years to Startup City Des Moines, an incubator that hopes to hatch promising technology companies. The Capital Crossroads vision plan, a major five-year strategy released this month aimed at boosting the metro area’s economic vitality and quality of life, mentions Startup City as a possible cog in a “conveyor belt” that would guide technology entrepreneurs through all phases of the launch and growth of their companies.

Vote September 27th On DART Changes

There's a big makeover of DART's bus routes and services. Commissioners are working on the final plans which they will vote on September 27th. The Des Moines Register reports the changes, which include more frequent service, will add as much as 65 cents to the property tax rate of most DART-affiliated cities over the course of a five-year period beginning July 1, 2012. Appeals Court: No New Rubashkin Trial

Sholom Rubashkin's lawyer is promising a U.S. Supreme Court appeal of today's Appeals court decision denying his client a new trial. Rubashkin, an ex-manager at Agriprocessors, was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 27 years in prison. His was busted after an immigration raid at the company's Postville plant. Rubashkin claims the judge in his case couldn't be impartial since were involved in planning that raid. The appeals court didn't agree.

Iowa August Jobless Rate Up Slightly

Iowa's unemployment rate increased slightly in August to 6.1% from the July's 6%. KCCI reports a year ago it was 6.2%. The head of the state's Workforce Development, Teresa Wahlert, says while the state still has one of the lower jobless rates nationwide, job growth stalled last month because of the same confidence issues being felt across the country. In the last year, Wahlert says the state's recovered 33% of the jobs lost in the Great Recession.

Teen Buys Synth Pot

A central Iowa mom said potentially dangerous synthetic marijuana knock-offs are on shelves in Des Moines. She said her teen went into a local convenience store and bought incense. She said he smoked it, got high, and now law enforcement here, like in other states, is looking at synthetic marijuana since it can be sold over the counter like that.

College Drinking Arrests Up

Drink, chug-a-lug...apparently what lots of college students are doing. That from the number of arrests on the campuses of Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. KCCI reports that in the first half of the year, the arrests at the University of Iowa were up by 600 people. At Iowa State, its 493, and both of those numbers from 2010. The arrest figures were released by the state Board of Regents.

DM Shooting Victim Lucky

A Des Moines fire rescue crew was heading back to the firehouse after a call, when one of the medics said they thought they someone lying on the ground in a parking lot. They turned around and found a man who'd been shot in the chest. KCCI reports this happened near 6th Street and College Avenue about 1:30 this afternoon. We're told the man was conscious and alter when taken to a hospital. Police are investigating.

After employees protested outside two daycare canters because they hadn't been paid, the owner of The Imagination and Education Station says she's shutting down her Urbandale center. Theresa Mulhern says she's keeping her West Des Moines location open. The Des Moines Register reports employees who continued to work have gotten paychecks, those who protested haven't, because Mulhern says they've been fired for unspecified company handbook violations.

Alcoa Expanding

Alcoa and Gov. Branstad announced plans for a $300-million expansion of their Davenport plant that'll create 150-new jobs. The plant makes aluminum automotive products which are in demand with Detroit making more fuel efficient machines, and demand for those parts is expected to double by 2013. KCCI reports the expansion, which is being supported by state tax, financing., R and D credits and training grants, should be done by the end of 2013.

Crossing Guard Killed Called Hero

Ankeny police say a school crossing guard hit by a pick up truck this morning died a hero. According to witnesses, the truck ran a red light at West 1st Street, and hit the 78 year old Luttrell as he stepped into the street holding a red stop sign over his head. Police tell KCCI Luttrell saved the lives of several children waiting to cross the street. The driver of the truck says he didn't see Luttrell, and the incident's under investigation.

Five Busted Yesterday, Four in Court Today

Four of five people indicted by a federal grand jury in Des Moines yesterday will be in court for arraignments today. The indictment names 37 year old Jason Kibbee of Kellogg, 37 year old Lane Anderson of Altoona, 46 year old David Mable of Urbandale, 42 year old Shannon Flickinger of Earlham and 41 year old Paul Kramer of Granger, each facing charges related to mortgage fraud. Attorney General Tom Miller in a press release issued yesterday that this is exactly the type of crime the Iowa Mortgage Fraud Working Group is stopping. He commended everybody involved in busting the fraud ring.

Cougar Spotted in Iowa City

There's been another cougar sighting in Iowa City. Police there said someone reported seeing a big cat near the city bike path at Ralston Creek. Animal control and police went to the location, but did not find the animal. There were several reports of cougar sightings earlier this month and two schools couldn't let students outside for recess. Police say if you see a cougar or any other wild animal, first, remain calm. Then call police.

Did Newton Robber Rip Off Osceola Bank?

Police are asking for your help in putting a name to a suspect who held up the Econo Lodge on W 19th Street at gunpoint this morning. Newton Police tell KCCI they do have surveillance video, and they've contacted their colleagues in Osceola to see if the suspect in this morning's hold up is the same one who robbed a bank there yesterday. Employee Allegedly Phones Bomb Threat In On Place of Employ

An employee of Tone’s Spices in Ankeny faces threat and theft charges after Polk County Dispatch got a call this morning of a bomb in the store. Police were able to track the location of the cell phone to the store. The owner of the phone was located and told officers it was missing. Police finally arrested 40-year old Desiree Dixon of Ames, who police tell the Des Moines Register, admitted making the call.

Microsoft and Alcoa Seeking State Incentives for Expansion

Details aren't in yet, but Microsoft, Alcoa, and Heinz are among the companies expected to ask the state for financial incentives to help them pay for expansion plans. Those incentives could be tax credits, grants, or loans. The Des Moines Register reports Microsoft's building a new data center in West Des Moines, with 25 jobs; and Alcoa's planning to add 80-people at a Quad Cities plant.

Voters Change DM School Board Election Proicess

Des Moines voters overwhelmingly approved changing the way school board members are elected. The seven at-large seats are out, replaced by a ward like voting system for four director districts, and three at large seats The Des Moines Register reports the plan passed yesterday with 66% or 3865, of the votes cast.

Four Killed Near Grinnell

Four people were killed last night in a crash on I-80 near Grinnell. Iowa State Patrol said a semi tractor trailer that 54-year-old Herbert Terrell of Huntington, Indiana was driving hit three vehicles along the side of the interstate, killing the three men standing outside the vehicles. There were two tow trucks on the scene to help a disabled semi when the crash happened. The others killed were 29-year-old Jesse Inman of Ankeny, 60-year-old Daniel Walsh of Des Moines, and 50-year-old James Langholf of Dakota, Illinois.

Iowa Courts Sending Unpaid Fines and Fees to Collections

Iowa’s court's are ramping up their effort to collect fees and fines, by turning to a collection agency. Court Administrator David Boyd tells the Des Moines Register a Kansas City law firm will try to collect fees and fines unpaid for over a year. The state's already toughened a current program requiring county treasurers not to issue car registrations unless residents who owe pay up. Iowa's courts are owed more than half a billion as of the end of June.

DM High School Student Busted for Assault

A student at Des Moines' North High School was removed from the school lunch room by police yesterday, after authorities say he assaulted another student. The Des Moines Register reports 18-year old Brandon Reyes-Ordaz punched a 14-year old. Police say each of the students involved is a member of a different gang. Reyes Ordaz allegedly walked up to the 14 year old boy in the lunch room and hit him, because he'd been talking "expletive" about him.

Repairs to Flood Damaged Highways Could Go Into Next Year

Missouri River flooding's caused more damage to Iowa roads than any event in the state's history. The Des Moines Register reports some parts of I-29 could be back open in the next few weeks, especially in the Council Bluffs area, but some other parts of the highway aren't expected to see traffic before the end of the year. For I-680, things could be more complicated, with IDOT saying repairs may not be completed until late next year.

Two firefighters were lowered into the bin and tethered Kaufman in place while the grain was emptied. It took about three and a half hours to get Kaufman out. He was airlifted to an area hospital. Two other Heartland co-op workers and a firefighter were taken to a hospital as a precaution after exposure to grain dust.

Man Faces Charges in Go-Cart Crash

A Red Oak man has been arrested after his two year old son was seriously hurt in a go cart crash. Reports indicate that 35 year old Michael Soar was arrested this (Tuesday) morning for child endangerment, and injury by vehicle. Police said the go cart that he and his son were riding in on September 5 hit a parked car. The child was hurt ald flown to a hospital in Omaha. Soar is in jail on a ten thousand dollar bond.

Phone Message Threat Leads to Temporary Closure of Marshall County Courthouse

The Marshall County courthouse was evacuated, and the building searched by sheriff's deputies and Marshalltown Police, after an employee found a threat about 9 this morning. The search didn't turn up anything suspicious, and the building was reopened about 90-minutes later. Authorities tell KCCI the voice message was left yesterday, and the sheriff's department's trying to find out who left it.

DNR Warning About Big Creek Lake Algae Bloom

A blue-green algae bloom's led Iowa DNR to warn everyone not to swim or drink the water at Big Creek Lake. That algae can produce a toxin that can kill dogs and make humans sick. It was discovered last weekend. A DNR advisory says the algae takes on a reddish brown color when it is at its most dangerous and has a foul odor. It can also appear pea-green or blue-green in color.

DM Police After Cycle Shop Robber

Des Moines Police are looking for the man who fired a shotgun during a robbery this morning on the city's east side. It happened just before noon at Cyclepedia, a motorcycle shop in the 1800 block of Dean ave. A police spokesperson tells the Des Moines Register there was an argument during the holdup, and that's when the gun was fired. The suspect got away with an undetermined amount cash, and got away in a black and silver SUV.

Chiropractor's License Pulled for Assault Conviction

A Perry chiropractor's had his license suspended for 5-years after being convicted of assault. A patient filed a complaint in 2010, claiming that while examining her for a back injury, Daniel Duffy allegedly pulled up her shirt, and masturbated on her back. The woman's mother took her to police, who swapped her back, and they found sperm matching Duffy's DNA profile. He was convicted of assault and sentenced to probation and community service.

Discrimination Suit gets Underway

A trial based on racial discrimination gets underway in Polk County and could last for about three weeks. The state wanted to throw out the suit earlier this month, but the judge said no, that it was not too broad a suit and should go forward. He reminded the state that it certified the suit for class action several years ago. Back in 2007, 14 people claimed they didn't get state jobs because they were black. Now, the suit covers some six thousand who have gone after state jobs over the past eight years.

Two Hurt Fighting Sunday Fire

Two firefighters were hurt battling a fire at a grocery store in Allison. Butler County sheriff's officials said a brick wall collapsed on Sunday during the fire at the J and C Grocery and one firefighter was taken to a hospital in Iowa City with non-life threatening injuries. The other was treated and released. Crews kept the fire from spreading to other buildings and while they don't know how the fire started, sheriff's officials said they don't suspect foul play.

WDM Officials Look for Cause of Morning House Fire

West Des Moines fire fighters are still looking for what started a house fire in the 400 block of Grand Avenue this morning. KCCI reports the owner of the home got out, but had to be treated for smoke inhalation. Grand Avenue was shut down for a while during the morning commute while the fire was brought under control. Initial reports say the blaze started in the basement of the home.

WDM, Clive and Urbandale Have Pet Licensing Plan

West Des Moines teaming up with Clive and Urbandale to raise the number of pets in their communities that are licensed. The fees will foot the tab for a new animal control shelter that will serve all three cities. The Des Moines Register reports all three communities have agreed on a plan to find a private firm that will promote pet licensing to residents.

Police Say Woman Stole ID and Went Shoplifting

Kelli Roth-DeBolt's in hot water, after police say she took the driver's license of an acquaintance and went shoplifting. Roth-DeBolt, who's from Granger, was caught by an off duty police officer at a Des Moines Walmart, where investigators say she'd shoplifted close to $700 in merchandise. The license theft was discovered after she'd been arrested. She's charged with theft and giving false information about her identity.

DMACC Sets Another Enrollment Record

More people are going back to school, and DMACC's got the numbers to prove it. Enrollment at Des Moines Area Community College is up 3% this year from last fall, and since 2000, enrollment's up 135%. In 2000, college enrollment was almost 11,000. Today it's over 25,000, and new record. DMACC has campuses in Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, Des Moines and West Des Moines. DMACC also has education centers on the south side of Des Moines, Perry and Ames.

Flags At Half Staff

Governor Terry Branstad has ordered U.S. and Iowa flags to be lowered in honor of Iowa service members who have lost their lives since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2011. Flags on state buildings will be lowered this afternoon and not raised again until 8 a.m. Monday. The tattered 9/11 Flag that was mended by tornado victims in Greensburg, Kansas and toured all 50 states, including Iowa, will end its journey Th Joplin, where tornado victims there will put the final stitches in. Those who have seen it, say it shows the resilience of the country.

West Des Moines Scrap Day

West Des Moines running a scrap appliance and metal drop off for residents September 17th at the public works facility. The hours are 8a.m. to noon. Among the items The Des Moines Register reports that can be disposed of free: water heaters, stoves, microwaves, VCRs, DVRs, printers, copiers, washers, dryers, furnaces, backyard grills, and exercise equipment. Polk City's City Manager Quits

No one's saying much about Tuesday's resignation of Matthew Brock as Polk City's city manager. He took the job 134 days ago. According to the Ledger, Brock isn't talking, and his replacement, as well as the mayor and city attorney aren't saying much either. Patricia Jackson, City Clerk, and interim City Manager would only say she believes it was by mutual agreement.

Relief COming for Downtown Des Moines Traffic Woes

Have patience. The construction that's turned traffic in downtown Des Moines into a nightmare should be done by Thanksgiving. Much of the work that's gummed things up is around the Polk County Administration building, and involves a huge storm sewer project, that's supposed to improve flood protection by separating the sanitary and storm sewers. More work is expected on the project next spring.

More Greyhound Service

Greyhound's started express service between Des Moines and Chicago. They've also added service between from Chicago to Davenport ans Chicago to Iowa City. KCCI reports these are some of the 24 new routes and six new markets Greyhound now serves. The express routes offer one stop or non-stop service between cities, free wireless Internet, power outlets and extra legroom. Greyhound's been getting more competition from Megabus.

Roommate Arrested in Billy Smith's Death

Investigators have now charged one of Billy Smith's roommates with first degree murder in connection with his death. KCCI reports that the Iowa Department of Public Safety released information that indicates that Travis Barker was arrested last night and is in the Carroll County Jail on a million dollar bond. Details of exactly what happened that lead to Smith's death have not been released, but we do know from previous reports that police think there was a fight at the house in Coon Rapids that Smith shared with four others.

Marshalltown Meat Theft

Police in Marshalltown say thieves stole a semi filled with over 42,000 pounds of meat over the weekend. The driver had left the rig parked in a lot Saturday near the intersection of Highways 30 and 14. When he came back to pick up the trailer on Monday, it was gone. The trailer belongs to Mid-Continent Trucking of Denison. Police say theft had to have been done by someone who knows semi's and the locking system they use. KCCI reports the trailer's valued at $45,000 and the meat another $100,000.

Keck City Center Heads to Auction

A district judge has approved the foreclosure and public auction of the Keck City Center in downtown Des Moines. The order filed earlier this week ends developer Dab Stanbrough's effort to remain owner of the property The Des Moines Register reports Regions Bank started foreclosure in January of 2010, claiming Stanbrough had defaulted on a $5.5-million loan. The banks sold its' interest in the property to a Texas commercial real estate investment group.

Polk County Jail Gets Body Cameras

Security's changed at the Polk County Jail. 20-utility response officers are now wearing body cameras when they're on duty, so prison officials are getting a lot closer to the inmates and the things that happen in the facility. The officers bring their new birds eye view when they respond to fights, medical emergencies and investigate aggravated inmates KCCI reports each body cam and computer cost more than $3,000. The jail bought 17 last month.

Lawsuit Over Project Labor Deals Tossed

A federal judge has tossed a lawsuit challenging Gov. Branstad's order barring the use of project labor agreements for publicly funded projects.
The judge ruled the state can decide to pay or not to pay union wages or operate under union conditions on projects funded with state dollars. KCCI reports the suit was filed by two unions filed the lawsuit in May, challenging the order barring state funds from public projects that have project labor agreements.

ISU Sets Enroillment Record

ISU says it's set a new record with enrollment for the fall, with close to 30,000 students. The tell KCCI they have their largest freshman class every, topping 5,000. Almost two thirds of that freshman class are from Iowa, and they also have a record number of transfer students, close to 1800. ALmost 1100 transferred in from state community colleges.

Hyundai Donates to Blank Children's Hospital

Blank Children's Hospital got a check today for $100,000. According to KCCI, Holmes Hyundai and Hyundai Motor America presented the donation to help pay for a psychologist who will help patients deal with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It's part of a an almost $7-million campaign including tv ads, donations, and materials at dealerships to raise awareness of childhood cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

9/11 Des Moines

2,977 flags, one for every person killed 10-years ago, will start appearing on the Capitol grounds today, to remember 9/11. KCCI reports they'll stay there though Sunday's 10th anniversary. There'll be a special ceremony at 7:30 Sunday morning near the Capitol, at the corner of East Grand Ave. and East 12th Street. Among those taking part in that ceremony: The Iowa State Patrol, Des Moines Police, Polk County Sheriff's, and Iowa National Guard.

Men Beat Up By Jewelry Thieves

Was it easy prey for burglars? A man claiming his name was Lamar called two men who had and ad on Craigslist, selling jewelry. "Lamar" came to see the goods and just as he left, two men broke into Carlton Moorhead and Marvin Jessop's sliding glass door. The suspects, who police said had bandannas over their faces, beat up the two men, threatened them, took the ten thousand dollars worth of jewelry and fled.

Branstad Outside Counsel

Iowa taxpayers will pay as much as $435 an hour, for lawyers to defend Gov. Branstad in against a suit alleging the shut down of 36-unemployment offices was unconstitutional. The attorney general usually handles litigation for the state, but when outside counsel's needed, the going rate, according to Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, a democrat, is $80/hour. The Governor convinced the Executive Council by a 3-1 vote to let him hire outside attorney's for the lawsuit.

Flashing Yellow To an Intersection Near You

Drivers in Des Moines and West Des Moines are seeing a new traffic light when they pull up to some intersections. Some of those intersections have an added flashing yellow arrow. According to KCCI, Some intersections using the new light have had a 30% drop in accidents and failures to yield on a turn. West Des Moines officials say failure to yield on a turn's the second most common crash after rear end collisions. Officials said the flashing yellow arrow is being added in Sioux City and Coralville.

WDM Long John Silver's Robbery

There's a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading West Des Moines Police to the man who robbed a Long John Silver's on First St. this morning. The Des Moines Register reports the suspect's believed to be in his late ‘30s, 5'8" and heavy set. with dreadlocks. Tobacco Outlet Robbery

Des Moines Police are looking for two suspects in yesterday's robbery at a Tobacco Outlet. According to KCCI, two men, with handguns, walked in and demanded money. One of the clerks told the pair to get out of the store. One of the them fired a shot in her direction. Another employee came out of a back room and was told she'd be shot. The two employees handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the gunmen took off.

Film Office Verdict

The jury's spoken, and found former Iowa Film Office Director Tom Wheeler guilty on only one of the 9-counts against him--misconduct in office. KCCI reports misconduct in office is a class D felony, with a penalty of up to five years in prison. Wheeler will be sentenced October 18th. There are three other people facing charges in the Film Office scandal.

Hawkeye Adopted

Remember hearing about Hawkeye the loyal lab who lay by his master's casket during Petty Officer Jon Tumilson of Rockford's funeral? Now, one of Tumilson's friends has adopted Hawkeye. The friend who kept the dog as Tumilson was deployed, and now Hawkeye will live at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Tumilson was one of 30 soldiers killed on August 6 when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.

Perry Tops New Rasmussen Iowa Caucus Poll

A new telephone survey has Rick Perry out in front of the field of current GOP presidential contenders. Of the 862 republicans expected to take part in the Caucus, 29% went for Perry, Michelle Bachmamn 18%, Mitt Romney 17%, and Ron Paul 4%. None of the other contenders, according to the Des Moines Register, got more than 4%. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3%

Plan to Cut Des Moines Precints

Twenty voting precincts in Des Moines could go away under a plan to save money on municipal elections. The Des Moines Register reports Des Moines officials are also considering asking for a change in state code that would allow city and school board elections to be held on the same date. The plan to cut Des Moines voting precincts from 108 to 88 would save $22,000/election.

Waukee School Election

There are two polling places for the Waukee School District board election September 13th: the school district administration office, 560 S.E. University Ave. in Waukee, or St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines. Six candidates are running for three seats. There's a candidate forum tomorrow night at 6:30 at Theater Arts Center at Prairieview School, 655 S.E. University Ave. in Waukee.

Council Bluffs Reopens Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge

Council Bluffs pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River to Nebraska's finally been reopened. KCCI reports the city closed the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in early July, because the Missouri River was at a record flood level for weeks, but it's finally receded. The bridge was reopened on the Iowa Side over the weekend.

Polk City Townhome Fire

Fire officials are still trying to determine the cause of a fire last night at 1509 West Indian Point Way. KCCI reports over a dozen adjoining townhomes had to be evacuated as a precaution. Five departments had be called out to knock down the flames. There were no injuries reported, and only the one town home sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

Coon Rapids Man Dies After Fight

Coon Rapids police said man died after one of his roommates allegedly injured him on Sunday. News Channel 8 reports that 28 year old Billy Smith and his roommate got into a fight on Saturday afternoon and Smith was eventually flown to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Several law enforcement agencies are investigating what happened and have not reported that any charges have been filed. Smith stayed on life support after he was declared clinically dead so his organs could be harvested for transplant.

Drake Suspends Two Basketbal Players After Theft Charge

Two Drake University hoopsters have been suspended from the team indefinitely, after they were arrested earlier this week. Rayvonte Rice and Kurt Alexander have been charged with fifth-degree theft; accused of stealing items from Scheels Sporting Goods at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. Rice led Drake in scoring, rebounds, steals and blocked shots last season.

Swim Warnings at 4 State Beaches

Four state-park beaches -Backbone, Lake Keomah, McIntosh Woods and Nine Eagles - had bacteria readings above swimming limits in samples taken earlier this week. State officials say if you go swimming at any of them, don't swallow the water and bathe when you're done. Lake Keomah's also got a warning about microcystin, The Des Moines Register reports it's emitted by algae and can cause skin rashes and even neurological problems. Dogs are especially at risk.

Minivan Baby

Marriah Love and Kaleb Benge will have quite a story to tell their new daughter. They were heading to Iowa Methodist Medical Center early yesterday from Lorimor, when their 6 pound 8 ounce bundle of joy decided she wasn't waiting for the maternity ward, pretty much making her own way out in the minivan. Love tells KCCI she only had to give a little pull and it was over. The birth certificate specifies place of birth as I-80, Waukee.

Iowa Film Office Jury Gets Long Weekend

The jury in the Iowa FIlm Office trial's getting a long weekend. They started yesterday and called it a day this afternoon. They're expected back for deliberations Tuesday. KCCI reports former office Director Tom Wheeler's charged with several counts of fraud, misconduct in office and conspiracy. Wheeler has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

St Louis Woman Hits Iowa Family

An Iowa father and young son were hit by a car while visiting the St. Louis on Wednesday. Police said that the 42-year-old father and 3-year-old son are from Bondurant. and their injuries are not-life-threatening. KMOV-TV reported that an East St. Louis woman was driving when she hit the family near the Gateway Arch about 6:30 last night. Police said she had fatally shot her two 4 and 5 year olds, then drove downtown where she hit the Iowa family. The woman is under arrest.

Palin Back in Iowa Saturday

Sarah Palin is supposed to be back in Iowa on Saturday. KCCI TV reports that Ken Crow, who's the founder of the Tea Party of America said he's organizing the event at which Palin will appear. It will be at the Indianola Balloon field. A friend of Palin's, who's in Iowa, also confirms that she'll be here. Palin has said she'd make a decision by sometime this month as to whether she'll make a run for the White house. She's expected at Saturday's Restoring America Event.
