Ankenyl Bond Referendum Pushed Back to February

The Ankeny School District's scrubbed plans for a September bond referendum, saying they need more information before asking the community to support an $18.5-million plan to build a 10th elementary school. They're looking at a bond referendum next February. One factor is leadership changes: the board has hired a new superintendent, two assistant superintendents and a chief financial officer since June.

Investigation of Saylorville Lake Drowning Continues

The Polk County Sheriff's still trying to figure out how a man ans two children fell out of their boat on Saylorville Lake yesterday. 40-year old Eric Scott of Urbandale drowned, but a passing boater spotted the two children in the water. Both were wearing life vests. They believe the 10-year old boy and 6-year old girl, had been in the water for as long as 30-minutes when they were found.

Parents Charged in Death of Newton Child

Parents of an Iowa boy who died in January now face criminal charges. Newton Police say 24-year old Joseph Olea's been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. 24-year old Chelsea Miller's charged with child endangerment resulting in death. Authorities alleged the father used unreasonable force on his son. The mom's charged because she allowed Olea to be a caregiver, even though she knew of his violent tendencies.

New Mom from Grimes Has Double Mastectomy Surgery

Tracy Nesbitt-Wright of Grimes had a double mastectomy today at Methodist Medical Center She was 30-weeks pregnant with twin girls, when doctors informed her she had breast cancer. The girls were born July 19th. Her husband tells KCCI they found cancer in lymph nodes near a tumor, but they don't believe it's spread. They expect test results back Thursday, but think Nesbitt-Wright's cancer is Stage II.

Sales Tax Holiday in Iowa Friday and Saturday

This Friday and Saturday you can buy clothing and shoes, with no sales tax or local option sales tax in Iowa stores. KCCI reports the exemption applies to each item priced under $100 no matter how many you buy. License Plate Scanning Expanding in DM Metro

More Des Moines metro law enforcement agencies are adding automatic license plate scanning technology. It allows authorities to instantly process your plates to see if the tags are expired, if there's a warrant out for the owner's arrest, or if the owner's in a gang. Polk County Sheriff's started using it last year. Des Moines Police get it this fall.

Shaun LaDue New WDM PD Chief

West Des Moines has a new Police Chief. Shaun LaDue was introduced by city officials today. He comes to the job with 20-years of experience including time as a Commander for the Bloomington, MN Police and Chief of Police in Owatonna. He's most recently been head of compliance investigations for UnitedHealthcare in Minnesota.

Fed Funding for I-80 Hwy 65 Hubbel Ave Interchange Upgrade

Congressmen Leonard Boswell and Tom Latham says the U.S. Transportation Department's approved close to $3.5-million in grants to finance improvements at the I-80/Hwy 65, Hubbel Avenue interchange. The project was proposed with traffic volumes rising near Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. The project will update and resurface the interchange, and should take two years to finish.

CarMax Opening in Urbandale-Hiring 60

CarMax plans to fill 60-new jobs in the Des Moines metro. The company's opening a new 44,000 square foot store in October at 10315 Hickman Road, near 100th Street. The Urbandale location will be the company's first in Iowa. You can apply for the jobs on line: www.carmax.com/desmoines.

Resuce Reported at Saylorville Lake

Authorities are trying to determine what led to this afternoon's water rescue at Saylorville Lake. KCCI reports rescuers first responded to a spot near the Mile Long Bridge, and then the Sandpiper Boat Ramp. One man was medivaced to Methodist Medical Center. Two children were also involved, but weren't hurt.

Who Didn't Volunteer...and Why?

When Gov Terry Branstad signed the order to allow state employees to pay 20 percent of their own health care, 95 stepped up to volunteer. However none were state lawmakers even though he asked them and department heads to do the same. He said it could save the state almost $111 million a year. State union leaders say that not having to pay health care premiums is the employees' trade-off for the lower pay in government jobs

Bouncing For A Good Cause

27 hours made for some record breaking bouncing for 8 teenagers at the Louisa County Fair on Friday. They broke the record set in 2011 in Ohio. Their bounce house jumping was not only for a shot at the Guinness book but also to get the word out about the bounce houses made in nearby Wapello and raise money for a new youth building on the fair grounds. Maybe next time they go for number of bounces instead of hours bounced.

Bank Robbery

A Bank of America was robbed Thursday afternoon for the second time in 2 weeks. 23-year-old Philip Watts walked into the bank and gave the teller a note and was able to walk away with cash. But police made quick work of finding him and recovered the money. Watts is now charged with burglary and larceny.

EEE Virus in Massachusetts

The deadly Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has been found in mosquito samples in Berkshire County Massachusetts for the first time ever. The county does extensive trapping of mosquitos and have never found it in Western Massachusetts before and where it is found, it is usually found much later in the summer. Officials are warning the public to be aware of the situation and try not to be bitten by mosquitos. The disease has a 35% mortality rate when contracted. No cases of infection in humans have been reported this summer.

NY to get Restitution from Drug Manufacturer

New York is due to get $64 million in restitution from drug distributor McKesson, according to State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. This is part of a suit charging McKesson with Medicaid overbilling and a 30-state settlement agreement.

Drug Bust

14 Syracuse residents have been indicted in a large scale cocaine distribution ring in Central New York. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse says the 14 will face cocaine trafficking charges. 12 were arrested Thursday and 2 remain at large. A large amount of cocaine, guns, and cash were recovered. Federal drug agents and local police launched an investigation into the cocaine ring in the spring of 2011.

Boy hit in Mall Parking Lot

A one-year-old boy ran into a driving lane at the Clifton Park Center Mall yesterday morning and was struck by a car. The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office says the boy escaped his parents and ran into the path of a car driven by a 23-year-old male. The child's injuries are not life threatening and no one is being charged.

Giants Practice in Albany

The Giants are in town and drawing a crowd. Albany residents are happy to see Big Blue practicing once again on the UAlbany campus after choosing to practice in their home training facility last year during the football lockout. Businesses in the area are already seeing an uptick in business as gawkers come to the campus to catch a glimpse of practice.

Attempted Abduction of a Child in Scotia

Glenville Police are looking for a man who attempted to abduct a 10-year-old girl in the village of Scotia yesterday evening. The man, a white male in his forties, is wearing a light blue t-shirt with an eagle and sword on it. He was driving a light green, four door sedan with an old style white and blue New York State license plate. A similar incident happened about 2 weeks ago, apparently, but that child's parents did not report it to the police. If you have any information, contact the Glenville Police Department.

Body Pulled From Mohawk River ID'd

State Police have identified the body recovered in the Mohawk River yesterday. Richard Bennet, a 41-year-old man from Galway, was also determined to be the driver who fled from a traffic stop Thursday night. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be from drowning and the death was ruled accidental.

Iowa State Runner Stalled in Arizona

Last night’s London Olympics opening ceremonies did not include a former Iowa State runner. Guar Marial is a refugee from Sudan’s civil war and is stuck in Arizona because of Visa problems. Marial lost 28 members of his family in the Sudan civil war and will run under the International Olympics Committee flag because the new country South Sudan does not have an Olympic committee yet. Officials expect to have Marial in London in time for his race August 12.

Burn Bans

66 of 99 counties in Iowa are under burn bans. Jasper, Crawford, Madison, O'Brien counties joined the long list Friday, banning all outdoor burning without permission. So far Dallas and Polk County are not under burning bans. The bans are expected to stay in effect until drought conditions improve.

Three arrested in sexual assault

A 20-year-old man and 2 juveniles are in custody and have been charged with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old Hamilton County girl Thursday afternoon. The Story County Sheriff's office took a 911 call Thursday from Peterson Park. The alleged victim told officers that she had been abducted from her rural Hamilton County home by three men and brought to the park. The men were located and have been charged. Twenty-year-old Mason Reilly of Ames is charged with 2nd degree sexual assault. He is being held in the Story County Jail on a bond of $25,000. The other two suspects, who are both 16-years-old, are being held at the Juvenile Detention Facility in Eldora. It will be up to the Story County Attorney whether they are tried as adults.

Farmers Filing Insurance Claim

The drought is taking its toll on Iowa farmers and many are eager to cut their ruined corn crop to be able tou se it as livestock feed, but experts are warning them to wait. Farmers are filing their insurance claims, but any claim over $200,000 will automatically be audited. Farmers are being told to wait until and adjuster had seen the crop and they've received official notice that their field has been released before harvesting it for other purposes.

Body Identified

The Hamilton Medical Examiner has identified the remains of the body found Thursday in the Little Wall Lake. The ME says the remains are those of Virgil Wilcox of Jewell who was reported missing in June of 2012, four years ago. His death has been ruled a suicide with drowning as the probable cause of death.

Man and Two Teens Charged in Sexual Assault on 17-year old Girl

One man and two teenaged boys have been charged by Story County authorities with yesterday's alleged abduction and sexual assault of a 17-year-old Hamilton County girl. The adult's identified as 20-year old Mason Reilly of Ames. The two boys are 16, and in juvenile detention. Reilly's in the Story County Jail on a $25,000 bond. The assault's alleged to have taken place at Peterson Park.

Court Rules Punishment for Strip Searching Students Confidential

Iowa Supreme Court's decided disciplinary action taken against two Atlantic school employees who strip searched five students in 2009 is confidential under open records laws. The students were searched to find $100 reported missing by another student. The employees’ names were released but the school claimed discipline is part of confidential personnel records and private.

New Stores at Jordan Creek This Fall

Some new stores are coming to West Des Moines' Jordan Creek Town Center this fall. A mall spokesperson tells KCCI Dry Goods, The Art of Shaving, Journeys and Journeys Kidz are on the way. Dry Goods is a clothing and jewelry store that features the latest fashions, The Art of Shaving's dedicated to men's shaving. Journeys is expanding and relocating from its current spot in the mall.

60+ Iowa Counties Under Burn Bans

Over 60-counties statewide are under burn bans as of today. Jasper, Crawford, Madison, and O'Brien counties joined the long list Friday, banning all outdoor burning without permission. Polk and Dallas counties haven't been added to the list yet. Those burn bans are expected to remain in place until there's some sustained rainfall.

Car Pulled From Lake Where Body Was Found Yesterday

Authoriities say they've pulled a car, with more human remains, from Little Wall Lake, the place where a family out fishing yesterday found a body in the water. KCCI reports an investigation to figure out what happened under way involving the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office with help from the Ellsworth-Jewell-Stanhope Police Department, Iowa DNR, Iowa DCI and the Story County dive team.

Gun Permit Apps Rise Since Aurora Shootings

Since the shooting at the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, there's been a jump in gun sales, background checks, and requests for concealed weapons training in Iowa. KCCI reports gun permit applications at the Polk County Sheriff's Office were up starting Monday, and a spokesperson says they've gone from the usual 10-applications/day to 60/day over the last two days.

DM Metro Water Use Down Wednesday

Des Moines Metro water use was down yesterday, to 90.6-million gallons of water, but that's still well above the norm of 60-million gallons/day. Des Moines Water Works asked customers Tuesday to cut use by 10% by doing things like taking shorter showers and not watering lawns. Officials tell The Des Moines Register supplies haven’t hit crisis stage yet, but they are developing emergency plans in case things get worse.

Peregrine CEO Detention Hearing Cancelled

Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russ Wasendorf, Sr.'s decided not to challenge his detention, for now. Wasendorf's been behind bars since July 13th when he was arrested for allegedly lying to regulators who say over $200-million of his investors money has disappeared. Authorities say he left a suicide confessing to a two decade long fraud and embezzlement scheme.

Fired DM Cop Pleads Guilty to Drug Possession Charges

28-year-old Brandon Singleton pleaded guilty today to misdemeanor drug possession charges. The ex-Des Moines cop was fired after being caught in his patrol car with pot and methamphetamine. He was sentenced to a years probation, and under a deferred judgment, if he completes it successfully, the charges could be removed from his record.

Family Fishing Finds Body in Little Wall Lake

A family fishing day on Little Wall Lake today's turned into a police investigation after a woman spotted a shoe in the water. She grabbed it and found it attached to part of a leg and a pair of khaki's. KCCI reports the Hamilton County Sheriff's had the partially decomposed body taken to the state medical examiner's office.

Hot Day Lots of Water

The National Weather Service marked the official temperature at 105 degrees at 3 p.m., the same as Monday’s high. Des Moines Water Works reported another water use record for Tuesday, at over 96.6-million gallons of water. Record water use and the drought have led officials to issue a voluntary conservation effort for the entire metro area.

Kiplinger's Ranks DM Best City for Families

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine's named Des Moines as the Best City For Families. The magazine praises the city's schools, low cost-of-living, brief commute, bike and walking trails and regional entertainment venues. According to Kiplingers all of it allows Des Moines residents to enjoy a living standard to be envied by bigger cities.

Studebaker Fire Won't Delay School Start

This morning's fire at Des Moines' Studebaker Elementary School won’t delay august 22nd's start-of-school. A district spokesperson says a contractor working on the building was doing welding, and that started the fire. Firefighters put it out quickly. There's no damage estimate, but the Des Moines Register reports the contractor will cover any repair costs.

Sebring Warned DM and Omaha Officials About Army Officer Emails

Des Moines School Board President and the attorney for Omaha's Board of Education knew about the emails between Nancy Sebring and an Army officer weeks before they became public, and in emails sent to the Omaha World-Herald, Sebring says they also knew they could become public record. Sebring resigned her Des Moines job, and withdrew from consideration for the Omaha position.

Over Dozen Being Watched for Signs of Mercury Poisoning

Over a dozen people, including four children, are being watched for symptoms of mercury poisoning after they were exposed in Armstrong. A construction worker remodeling a house found a plastic bottle with about 40 pounds of liquid mercury Friday. KCCI reports he took it to a bar to show friends, and someone dropped it exposing almost a dozen people there. The worker then his what was left in a sandbox outside the home where he was working. That's where the kids found it.

New DM Snow Parking Ordinance Passes First read

Des Moines City Council today approved a tough new snow ordinance in a first reading today. It would ban all on street parking during snowstorms. The Des Moines Register reports on street parking would be out until plows have come through. Carpenter, Drake, Drake Park, River Bend and Sherman Hill would be exempted because of population density and lack of off street parking options.

New Name Coming for State Public Safety Building

There's a special ceremony Thursday morning at the Department of Public Safety building in Des Moines. They're going to be renaming the building in honor of the first Iowa State Patrol officer killed in the line of duty. The new name will be the Oran Pape State Office Building Pape was 29, when he was killed during a 1936 shootout with a suspect.

Greyhound Dropping Bus Service Through Des Moines

Say bye bye Greyhound. The bus company's pulling the plug on a run from Chicago to Omaha that sopped in Des Moines August 16th. A company spokesperson says it's part of a service realignment. Iowa based Burlington Trailways, will pick up the Greyhound route, as well as the downtown station on Keosauqua Way.

Mom of Missing Evandale Girl Says Lie Detector Test Clears Her

The mom of one of the two missing Iowa girls says she's passed a polygraph that should clear her of any role in the disappearance of her daughter Misty and her cousin Elizabeth Collins, from Evansdale July 13th. Authorities think both girls are alive, and they also want to interview a paddleboater on Meyers Lake, where the missing girls belongings were found.

Ediucation Leadership Symposium is Sold Out

Organizers of next month’s Iowa Teacher and Principal Leadership Symposium at Drake, say the event's sold out. The Des Moines Register reports 700 are expected to join the discussion of how to organize schools to let teachers be instructional leaders. Registration was open to everyone. The event will be hosted by Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Iowa Education Director Jason Glass.

Parents of One of the Missing Evansdale Girls Advised to StopTalking

The parents of Lyric Cook-Morrissey, one of two missing girls in Evansdale, are done talking to the media and police on the advice of their attorney. An aunt of one of the girls says Dan and Misty Cook Morrisey have also been told to stop taking polygraph's. The Des Moines Register reports Dan Morrissey's denied being involved in the disappearance of the girls, despite family statements that police believe he is involved.

Bicyclist Hit and Run Victim

60-year old Robert Vitera's a lucky man. He's in stable condition at Mercy Medical after someone hit his bicycle from behind, knocking him into a ditch. It happened along Hubbell Avenue near 34th Street NW in Altoona around 11:15 last night. Vitera was able to walk to a local business for help. Flower Pot Spontaneously Combusts Starting House Fire

Des Moines fire officials say a flower pot spontaneously combusted, doing about $80,000 in damage to a home at 3111 E. 43rd Street yesterday afternoon. KCCI reports the pot was on the porch and flames spread up the front of the home into the attic. The Red Cross is helping the homeowner with temporary accommodations.

Police Arrest Suspect in Ankeny Police Station Shooting

Police think they have the man who allegedly fired several shots at Ankeny's Police Headquarters in April. 20-year old Quincy Martin, who's already in the Polk County Jail, is now charged with terrorism, criminal mischief and discharge of a firearm inside city limits. An Iowa DCI report says a shell casing found at the scene matched a gun Martin was in possession of at the time of the shooting.

Three Kids Hurt in Daycare Bus Crash

A school bus carrying daycare students and a van collided this afternoon in the 8200 block of Northwest 37th St. near Polk City. The bus belonged to Tender years Daycare, and it rear ended a van. Three children were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the accident's still under investigation.

Peak Water Alert Issued by DM Area Water Utilies

For the second time this month Des Moines-area water utilities have issued a “peak water alert,” and they're asking customers to take a moment to think about how much water they're using and try to use less. The Des Moines Register reports the water utilities say they have enough water, but if the demand stays high, they may, for the first time in 30-years, ask the Army Corps to release water from the Saylorville reservoir.

First Iowa Whole Foods Open in WDM

Whole Foods first Iowa store opened this morning in West Des Moines, and KCCI reports there were 100-people lined up in the parking lot waiting to get in. The store's at 4100 University Avenue. A Whole Food spokesperson says they'll provide natural, organic and gourmet foods that are free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats. There'll be first week special events and sales.

prison Guard Fired for Kicking Inmate Wants Job Back

A state corrections officer's shown in a prison video kicking an inmate last November, says he's contesting his firing for use of excessive force. The video,obtained by The Des Moines Register, shows Michael Scott, taking an inmate to his cell at the Iowa State Penitentiary, backing up a step then kicking him. Scott was fired in December. The guards union and the state have been at odds on staffing levels.

Wendt Sued by Ankeny School Board

Ankeny's School Board's suing former Superintendent Matthew Wendt for fraud and deliberately misleading board members. The district wants a Polk County District Court judge to void the deal that gave Wendt over $176,000 in severance. The Board says it never would have approved the severance if they'd known Wendt already had the job as Superintendent of the Oswego, IL. School District .

DM Elementary Schools Getting Help Keeping Kids Fit

Thirty-five Des Moines elementary schools will use Midwest Dairy Council grants to promote physical activity and healthy choices in the coming school year. The $41,000 in grants is from the Fuel Up to Play 60 program which encourages kids to eat nutrient-rich foods and clock at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Ankeny Rejoins Bravo

Ankeny's decided to rejoin the regional arts council, Bravo Greater Des Moines, signing back on for a quarter of a million dollars this year. The Des Moines Register reports Ankeny chose not to renew its agreement with Bravo last June. Mayor Steven Van Oort also says he wants to bring back the Ankeny Arts Council, which has been idle for the last 8-years.

DM PD Looking for Bank Rob Suspect

Des Moines PD are after the suspect in a robbery at the US Bank branch at 2401 University Avenue this morning. The Des Moines Register reports the suspect handed the teller a note demanding money. Woman Released from Prison in Deadly Texting Crash

The 20-year old Essex woman sent to prison for 2-counts of vehicular homicide for a head on crash that killed two boys in 2010 is out of prison. Karli Brown was speeding, texting and passing in a no-passing zone at the time of the crash, and given 10-years. That was changed yesterday to 5-years supervised probation. A prosecutor says he's not surprised, calling the crash 'gross neglect,' and adding the judge wanted her to see the inside of a prison.

Small Explosion Blows Out Window in Des Moines Home

An exploding can of bug spray blew out the bedroom window of a home at 2704 Dean Ave in Des Moines. KCCI reports the home owner called 911 to report an explosion after hearing several loud booms. Firefighters found a small fire under a sink, along with 8-cans of Bug Fogger spay that ruptured or exploded, and some of the cans had severe signs of rust. Damage's estimated at less than $10,000.

DM PD After Robbery Suspects

Des Moines PD say 53-year old Stephen Hamilton was beaten, tied up, and robbed yesterday. He had to write down what happened because the two men who attacked him, broke his jaw. Investigators say a woman stopped by his home for help with her car. She claimed to be a friend of his roommate, who's doing jail time. She called for a ride, and two men showed up and attacked Hamilton. $700 was taken. The suspects are two white men.

WDM Police Chief Finlaists Meet and Greet Friday

You can meet the four finalists for West Des Moines Police Chief during a meet and greet Friday, from 8 to 9a.m. at City Hall. The Des Moines Register reports the finalists are Shaun LaDue of Owatonna, Minn.; J.C. Paez of Algonquin, Ill.; Alfonso Pizzano of Smithtown, N.Y.; and Marti Reilly of Sioux City . The candidates will then be interviewed by panels made up of community members and others. The new chief could start in September.

Juvie's Convicted of Murder in Iowa Can be Paroled After 60-years

Gov. Branstad's used his office's power of executive clemency to keep 38 inmates convicted of murder when they were juveniles. The Des Moines Register reports the decision follows a U.S. Supreme court ruling that found life without the possibility of parole for teens convicted of murder violates the 8th Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The 38 inmates here will be eligible for parole only after serving a minimum 60-years in prison.

Iowa's So Dry It's "Tinder Box"

The state fire marshal says the state hasn't been this dry since the 80's and it's so dry, it's a "tinder box." Ray Reynolds says you should be extremely careful with fireworks, lit cigarettes and all outdoor burning. Close to a third of the state's under a burn ban, and Reynolds says the only fires allowed are controlled burns, and they require a not only a permit from a fire chief, but require supervision.

Nov. 1 Deadline to Apply for Sioux City Casino License

Student Health Fair Next Wednesday at East High

Kids in grades K-12 are invited to a free back-to-school health fair Wednesday, from from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at East High School, 815 E. 13th St. The Des Moines Register reports there'll be physicals, immunizations, and dental screenings. A Parent or guardian must accompany the student, and you'll need to bring their immunization records. You'll also be able to fill out health and dental insurance applications and sign up for food assistance.

New Food and Activities at Iowa State Fair

There'll be some new things at this years Iowa State Fair. Organizers released a list today and it includes a 9-foot tall life-sized moose Dutch chocolate moose in the Ewell Family Food Center, Gourmet s'mores at Beaverdale Confections, Caribbean-style crab fritters at Ollie’s Crab Fritters, and a new 130-foot long zipline west of the Jacobson Exhibition Center. The fair's run is Aug. 9 to 19.

Drought Dries Up Rivers, Threatens Water Supplies

The drought of 2012 is getting worse. State leaders said yesterday that some rivers and streams are at historically low levels. The Iowa DNR's Tim Hall says about 40 percent of Iowans get their drinking water from groundwater sources. Many towns rely on shallow wells, which tap into underground aquifers near the surface. Hall says thos communites are vulnerable to losing their water supply as streams and rivers dry up. According to the Department of Natural Resources, some rivers and streams throughout the state are so dry they're not even flowing.

Flags to be Lowered for Iowa Soilder Killed in Afghanistan

Gov. Branstad's ordered all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff from 5 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. on Monday, to honor the memory of Army Sgt. James Skalberg Jr. The 25-year old was killed in Afghanistan, while on active duty in the U.S. Army on June 27, when an IED was detonated near the vehicle he was driving. He was one of two soldiers killed in the explosion.

Drug Treatment Returns to Polk County Jail

After a 2-year absence, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council's bringing a residential drug treatment facility back to the Polk County Jail. The Des Moines Register reports the treatment program will be in the empty west wing of the jail and should be up and running by September 1st. Bridges of Iowa, a non-profit organization that handles long-term residential treatment and other support, is leasing the space from the jail to run the program.

Lamberti Now Head of Iowa Racing-Gaming Commission

Former State Senate President Jeff Lamberti has a new job, head of the Iowa's Racing and Gaming Commission. KCCI reports Lamberti pleaded guilty two weeks ago to DUI. Lamberti says he's grateful for the vote of confidence and move on from the drunk-driving incident. Iowa has 18 casinos, two greyhound tracks and one horse track.

Victim's Girlfriend Testifies at Polak Trial

Charles Freeborn's girlfriend was on the stand today at the trial of the man charged with his murder. Richard Polak's charged with opening fire on Freeborn's Des Moines home last August. Jessica McKellip testified that Polak had been beaten and robbed at her home a few months before the murder, and prosecutors say Freeborn was an unintended target of Polak's retaliation.

Mountain Lion Reported in Metro

Children at the Norwoodville Rec Center were told to stay inside this morning, as a precaution, after residents of the Norwoodville neighborhood called police saying they'd spotted a mountain lion. The area's just a little south and east of the eastern mixmaster, in the 3200 block of NE 46th Street. KCCI reports police searched the area and didn't see the mountain.

B and B On TV Later This Year

B and B Grocery, Meat and Deli and it's "killer" tenderloin, will be on t.v. in November or December. KCCI reports Joe and Johnny Brooks, got the call that Andrew Zimmerman, host of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods," had picked them for his show. Zimmerman was in town yesterday to the taping,. For the uninitiated, B and B’s "killer" tenderloin's a little over a pound of meat, then there's bun, ketchup, mustard, pickles and onion.

DM Schools Alternate Contract Popular

First year teachers appear to like the Des Moines School District's alternate teacher contract. It gives them a higher starting salary, and they can earn their master's at the district's expense. In exchange, the teachers sign up for 4-years in an intensive new teacher training program and another four years completing graduate-level coursework. The Des Moines Register reports about 50-teachers have signed on for the alternative pay package.

Drought Meeting 9a.m. Tuesday in Mount Pleasant

Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds will be joined by state leaders, folks from USDA as well as agriculture and environment experts next week in Mount Pleasant to talk about this summer's drought and what can be done to help farmers. It's 9a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant High School. USDA's sped up the process farmers use to apply for disaster help as crops burn up in the widest drought in nearly 25 years.

Union Files Complaint Over Branstad Health Care Order

AFSCME's filed a complaint with the Iowa Public Employment Relations Board. Council 61 claims Gov. Branstad broke the law when he issued an executive order allowing state workers to voluntarily pay 20% of their health insurance premiums. A union spokesperson says state law bans Branstad from making unilateral changes to health insurance plans because they are collectively bargained.

Bottle Explodes During Chemical Process at Ankeny Monsanto

A bottle under pressure exploded at the Monsanto plant in Ankeny early this afternoon. Ankeny Fire Chief Rex Mundt tells the Des Moines Register the bottle apparently ruptured during a chemical process from being over pressurized. One employee was taken to a hospital concerned she might have been exposed to chemical vapors. She's already out of the hospital.

Windsor Heights Hy-Vee Fire

Firefighters were called to a Hy-Vee store in Windsor Heights late this morning. When the alarms went off t the store in the 7100 block of University Avenue, customers left their carts and got out. Windsor Heights Fire Chief Chris Cross tells KCCI a few sprinkler heads activated ans helped contain the fire to an area near a mechanical room. Cross says the problem was a malfunctioning water heater.

DM School Baord May Vote to Shut Charter School for a Year Tonight

Des Moines School Board's expected to discuss temporarily shutting down the district's charter school during tonight's meeting. A District spokesperson tells KCCI the proposals to close the school for one year. If the board approves, it would still need a green light from the Iowa Department of Education. The board meeting's in the multi-purpose room on the second floor of Central Campus, at 1800 Grand Ave.

Manchester Teen Charged with Suggested Ways Grandson Kill Grandparents

Authorities say a 19-year old arrested in the murders of a Manchester couple in May, allegedly helped the couple's grandson by suggesting ways to kill them. Brandon Ahlers has been charged with two counts of aiding and abetting in first-degree murder in the deaths of Richard and Janet Sweet. Their 17-year old grandson, Isaiah Sweet's been charged as an adult with two counts of first degree murder.

Branstad Testifies Before Congress This Week on DM F-16's

Gov. Branstad's testifying before the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness Thursday. He's expected to voice his opposition to U.S> Air Force plans to cut the F-16 aircraft at the Des Moines-based 132nd Fighter Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard. Branstad's co-chair of the National Council of Governors.

State Govt. Getting Closer to Spending and Revenue Matching

State Auditor David Vaudt says Iowa's getting better at cutting its reliance on one-time sources for ongoing expenses, but the state's still spending more than it takes in..but at $171-million, it's better than it's been. Vaudt says the state has two big hurdles coming: unfunded pension liability, down now to 80%, and the potential loss of federal aid for many programs as Uncle Sam pulls back to get its own house in order.

Grimes Sues YMCA For Community Center Fire

The city of Grimes is suing the local YMCA claiming an unattended lit candle led to a February fire that did over $200,000 damage to the city's Community Center at 401 S.E. Main St. According to The Des Moines Register, the candle was in a space at the center leased by the YMCA. The city wants reimbursement for damages from the fire plus interest and whatever else a Polk County judge finds appropriate.

Branstad Still Doesn't Want Expanded Medicaid

Gov. Branstad says he still doesn't want to expand the state's Medicaid program. It already serves 450,000 people, and another 150,000, paid for by the feds, would be added under the Affordable Care Act. Branstad says he'd prefer a state based program requiring everyone to pay something, with insurers and providers pitching in to lower costs. Democratic State Sen. Jack Hatch plans to introduce a bill to expand Medicaid.

Iowa DOT Battling Road Blowups

Iowa DOT crews have been busy dealing with blowups on area highways. KCCI reports they're worried about any bumps or heaves that appear on a road, but they could get worse and turn into a blowup..where the pavement rises up in a spot it's not support to. Dozens of repairs have been made to roads in the DM Metro, and that's basically trying to mill down the raised section until permanent repairs can be made.

A Cool Down's on the Way

Mother Nature's about to turn down the furnace. While the excessive heat warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday may be the end of this intense heat. Cooler weather's expected next week as high temperatures drop back into highs in the 80s, the norm for this time of year, and that's expected to start Sunday with the high for the day expected in the upper 80's.

ISU Solar Car Set for 1600 Mile Race

ISU's new solar car is a week away from starting the American Solar Challenge. Team PrISUm’s new solar race car, the Hyperion, is in New York state today for inspections and to qualify for the race. The race starts July 14 in Rochester, N.Y., and ends in St. Paul, Min. KCCI reports 18-teams are expected to compete in the 1,650 mile race.

More Commercial Growth in West Des Moines

A new Panda Express is open in West Des Moines, and the Des Moines Register's reporting it could soon have another of other well known neighbors at the including an Ethan Allen Design Center, and possibly a Pier 1 Imports. The Galleria at Jordan Creek's already home to Wal-Mart, Trader Joe’s, TJ Maxx and 2nd Wind. There are also talks underway with possible tenants for a three-story office building at the corner of South 60th and Stagecoach Drive.

Metro Waste Authority and Goodwill are partnering to offer free computer recycling. You can drop off computers and computer accessories at the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off at 1105 Prairie Drive SW in Bondurant. KCCI reports You can also drop off your computer at any Goodwill Industries of central Iowa retail store or their headquarters at 4900 NE 22nd St. in Des Moines.

Dalasta Attorney Asks for Another Delay in Crash Trial Start

A judge is expected to rule next week on the request for a delay, the fifth,. in start of Kevin Dalasta's trial. He's charged with 2-counts of vehicular homicide in a 2010 Ankeny car crash that killed Carson and Claire DeJoode. His attorney says his client's still recovering from major surgery in March, and right now can't assist in his own defense. They're asking for a November trial date.

Fireworks Complaints Down This Year

People appear to be taking the state's new fireworks laws seriously. KCCI reports Urbandale Police wrote two citations and responded to 18 calls, numbers down from past years. Windsor Heights, Ames and Altoona Police say they didn't write any tickets, neither did Clive PD, but they confiscated fireworks from one person. West Des Moines PD wrote 6-tickets total.

Adventurlande Gets a Ticket Blast from the Past

Adventureland officials were stunned last week when a family showed up at their gates with a pair of stockholder tickets from 1983, that originally cost $6.50 each. A stockholder ticket was a discounted ticket sold to a stockholders when Adventureland still had them. They don't anymore. The family was asked, and paid an $8 upgrade and enjoyed their day at the park. Tickets for adults now are $39.

Peak Water Alert for DM Metro Area

A peak water alert's been issued for the Des Moines metro area by 22-water utilities serving communities here. It's a notice that the area's closing in on a record amount of water use for the day, and everyone should be thinking conservation. KCCI reports the water use record for a single day was 92-million gallons in June 2006. Des Moines Water Works says customers used almost 84 million gallons Tuesday and 89 million yesterday.

Gov. Briefly Hospitalized After Choking on Food

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad added an emergency room to his holiday schedule yesterday, after he choked on a carrot after the re-dedication ceremony of the U.S.S. Iowa battleship in Los Angeles. Branstad's spokesman, Tim Albrecht, tells KCCI Branstad underwent tests and was released from the hospital. Albrecht said late yesterday afternoon Branstad was still planning to watch fireworks and visit with some family in the area.

Three Kids Drown

Police say three children drowned in the Iowa River in Marshalltown last night. Rescue workers said two girls and a boy were swimming with family members near Riverview Park when they went under water and did not come up about 6:15 p.m. A two-hour search ended with the discovery of their bodies. They are a 9-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. Their names are being withheld until family is notified.

UPC Swap Scam in West Des Moines

West Des Moines PD's looking for several suspects in a new retail scam-swapping the bar or UPC codes from cheaper items to more expensive ones. The Des Moines Register reports there've been at least two cases where thieves took the UPC code from an $80 Blu-ray players and attached it to a $980 computer. One man's already been arrested and charged with theft.

Charges or Fines Possible in Montour Water Pressure Drop

Iowa DNR and the Tama County sheriff's office are investigating a man in the town of Montour who caused a pressure drop in the town's water system when he filled his pool from a fire hydrant. That pressure drop triggered a boil order for the entire town. Investigators say that man, who hasn't been identified by officials, could face charges or fines. Montour's Mayor tells KCCI 30,000 gallons of water were drained in just a few hours.

No Des Moines Trash Pick Up Wednesday

Tomorrow’s Fourth of July holiday means the city of Des Moines won’t be doing trash or recycling pick up. The city’s delayed collection schedule will resume Thursday, July 5 through Saturday July 7. If you've got any questions tou can call the city's Public Information Office at 515 243-4950.

Staying Safe in the Heat

With the heat wave still in full force, health experts are concerned because many cooling centers won't be open tomorrow. Polk County's overnight center at the Youth Shelter will open tonight at 8 and stay open until 8 Thursday morning. The Des Moines Register reports experts say you can enjoy outdoor activities, but you have to stay hydrated, drinking lots of water-and not wait until you're thirsty; and avoid alcohol-which can contribute to dehydration.

Branstad Says No Changes for Felons Getting Voting Rights Back

A spokesperson for Gov. Branstad says there'll be no changes in the process for ex-felons to get their voting rights back. The Des Moines Register reports that process includes submitting of a credit report, paying all fines and restitution, getting a background check, and answering 31-questions. The policy's been blasted in editorials, by the ACLU and Democrats.

New Left-Turn Traffic Signals Going Statewide

Left-turn signals. at intersections statewide are about to change. Some intersections, including a few here in Des Moines have already switched to the new flashing yellow arrow left turn lights. The change's coming because Federal Highway Administration has adopted the flashing yellow arrow as a national standard. Hawkinson Pleads Not Guilty

Ronald Hawkinson's pleaded not guilty to gunning down two of his coworkers in May at a Des Moines trucking company. Hawkinson's charged with killing Robert Smoot and Serif Hidic during an argument. Hawkinson appeared before a judge in the Polk County Jail this morning. His next court hearing's in August.

Montour Residents Have to Boil Water, Pool Filling Causes Pressue Drop

DNR's directed residents of Montour to boil their drinking water until tests show it's safe. The reason's a drop in water pressure. A resident used a fire hydrant to fill their swimming pool, causing the pressure drop. Whenever there's a pressure drop, the monitoring system automatically sets off a boil alert because of possible bacterial contamination.

Branstad and Reynolds to Pay 20% of Health Insurance Premiums

Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds say they'll start paying 20% of their health insurance premiums starting August 1st. KCCI reports the two are trying to set an example for state employees who now have the option of doing the same thing. Officials say if all eligible state workers pay the 20% it could save Iowa $100-million/year. An AFSCME spokesperson calls the move "playing political games."

Midwest economy slowing down

The Midwest economy is slumping. The survey released today on the Mid-America Business Conditions Index shows - it dropped to 57.2 last month, compared to 57.6 in May. The index was 60 in April. One-fourth of the managers surveyed - said the biggest obstacle in the next year is the implementation of health care reform.
