The day police say Jackie Burkle killed her twin newborn daughters, she was only 10 miles away from an Ames hospital that would have taken the kids no questions asked. With Iowa’s safe haven provision, Burkle could have handed the infants over to workers at any health care facility staffed around the clock with no legal consequences. The Des Moines Register reports social service agencies say this is a sign the save haven provision needs to be better publicized.
