Legislative Leaders say Gas Tax Approval Likely

Leaders from both parties of the legislature say they'll probably approve a hike in the gas tax. Lawmakers appear to be coming together on a proposal that gets $50-million in savings from the transportation department for the budget year starting July 1st, paired with a 4-cent hike in the fuel tax, gasoline and diesel fuel, in each of the next 2-years. The tax is 21 cents/gallon for gas and 19 cents for ethanol-blended fuel now; and the state gets $22-million for each penny hike.
