Iowa's connection to Sundance

Carolyn Briggs from Johnston is generating some buzz at the Sundance Film festival. She's a writer who teaches at Marshalltown Community College, and has been in Utah, where a movie based on her 2002 memoir "This Dark World" has produced some big-time talk. The movie is called "Higher Ground," and it's based on her 1960s childhood in Eldora, her years as a young mother in Des Moines, as well as her participation in and eventual departure from a tight-knit faith community in the '70s, which blended fundamentalist Christian beliefs with progressive practices such as eating health food and nursing one another's children. The reviews of the movie have been positive so far she says. She has three screenings at Sundance.
