Same Sex Ban Passes State House

The Iowa House has approved a resolution calling for a statewide election on amending the Iowa Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage in the state. The House voted was 2 to 1 in favor, of Joint Resolution 6, which would deny any form of legal recognition for same-sex couples.
With Republicans controlling the House on by a 60-40 margin, GOP leaders have predicted the resolution will pass the House easily. KCCI reports Three Democrats voted for the resolution: Rep. Kurt Swaim, Dan Muhlbauer and Brian Quirk. Leaders of the Senate, controlled by Democrats on a 26-24 edge, are insisting they will not debate the resolution. It would have to be approved in this Legislature and the one elected next year before an election would be held.
