Contentious Issue in Iowa City

The Iowa City city attorney is studying what could be a contentious issue: banning the public from meetings of a board that tax payer dollars support. The board is that which oversees municipal improvement district, and says its meetings are closed to the public because its a nonprofit and that it doesn't have to abide by the open meetings law. Property owner have to pay for the board with a tax levy in July and the University of Iowa will give 100 thousand dollars a year to support the board's operations. City Attorney Eleanor Dilkes is looking into the issues.
