An Iowa City man stands accused of stealing his own cat from an animal shelter, now vows to fight the charge.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen newspaper reports that Justin Kaufman was charged with fifth-degree theft on Saturday after he allegedly cat-napped Smokey from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. The cat escaped its home, was picked up and brought to the shelter. The police report said Kaufman came to the shelter, asked about a fee and when the shelter employee stepped away to check on it, Kaufman grabbed the cat from the cage and made a run for it, taking Smokey home. Smokey is now in hiding, living with Kaufman's sister in Dubuque, and Kaufman says he'll plead not guilty to the theft charge.
