Public Forum on Tax Abatements Tonight

Members of the Des Moines City Council will be debating whether to continue to offer a popular tax break that's been credited with bringing new development and people to the city. The residential tax abatement program for new construction and renovations expires at the end of the year, unless the Council renews it. Supporters says the incentive has spurred downtown development and home construction in neighborhoods like Easter Lake and Brook Run. Others say it's too generous, and the city coffers could use the tax money. There will be a public forum on the program tonight.
