Governor and Insurer Kick off Healthiest State Initiative

Governor Terry Branstad is launching a campaign to make Iowans more healthy. The state was ranked 19th in the nation for overall wellness, and Branstad announced, yesterday, that he wants Iowa to be #1 by 2016.

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield is Iowa’s largest health insurer, and the company is on board with the Healthiest State Initiative. Officials agreed to spend up to 25 million dollars over the next five year to help local communities adopt what they call “blue zone” approaches to improving physical and emotional health. There’s a benefit to the company too. Researchers say even minor changes toward healthier behavior could lead to billions of dollars in savings, because of reduced health care costs.
