A gun shop in a neighborhood garage? There is a proposal to open a gun sales and repair shop at a residence in Des Moines' Waterbury neighborhood and some nearby homeowners are urging the city to deny the request. Wayne Whitfield, who lives in the 400 block of 59th St., wants to open the shop. Opponents argue the shop would be out of character with the neighborhood and create security risks for nearby Hanawalt Elementary and Merrill Middle schools. The city will take upt he issue again Feb. 23.
