Former Prosecutor to Plead Guilty to Drug Charges

Former Warren County Attorney Bryan Tingle's expected to plead guilty to drug possession charges. He was arrested last week and charged after KCCI reports an undercover officer spotted him smoking something from a glass pipe while he was driving along Highway 65 near Carlisle. Tingle's asked to be sentenced immediately. His next court date is June 7th.

Iowa Government Shutdown Contingency Plan

With a shutdown of Iowa government looking more likely, the state president of Council 16 of AFSCME's sent a letter to Gov. Branstad asking for details on the so-called government shutdown contingency plan. Branstad declined comment on it during a news conference today. He did tell the Des Moines Register a contingency plan for a shutdown exists, and the director of the state's Department of Management would only add essential services would continue if there's a shutdown.

UNI Hosts Solar Boat Racing

The University of Northern Iowa's hosting the 2011 Solar Splash World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boat Racing for the first time next month. It's June 8-12 at George Wyth Park. It will include 21 teams from four countries. A UNI tech professor calls the event a hand-on educational experience. The Des Moines Register reports teams earn points in seven categories, including engineering design, workmanship, and on-the-water sprint, endurance and slalom competitions.

Charles City Chicken Plant Reopening

The new owners of a Charles City chicken plant that closed last winter hope to reopen it by Sept. 1. According to KCCI, Chicago-based Charles Austin Ltd., and an associated, separate company, had the winning bid of just over $2-million at an federal bankruptcy court auction Friday. A spokesperson for the new owners, says they plan to hire 100 people, and add another 50 by the end of the year, with a 2nd shift coming on line in 2012

New site opening for Food Assistance applications

A new place where folks can apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will open Wednesday at the Des Moines Area Religious Council Annex, 3605 Douglas Ave. It will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for applications.

Ankeny band needs new uniforms

The Ankeny marching band needs new uniforms, and they've started a campaign to raise funds. You can donate $2 to the cause as you pay for your groceries at the Fareway store on North Ankeny Blvd. They've had the current unifroms for 23 years. Eventually -- in the 2013 school tear -- new uniforms will outfit 320 band members.

Winds flip boat, man okay

The wind not only interfered with your backyard bbq yesterday, it also caused problems on area lakes. Strong winds flipped over a sailboat at Gray’s Lake Park last night, and the person tried for about ten minutes to turn the boat back over before swimming to shore. The man made it safely, and the current eventually brought the boat ashore as well.

Woman targeted in drive-by shooting

Des Moines Police say Shana Marie Harris was at home on 17th Street, lying on her couch about 5 a.m. watching TV when she heard shots go off and dropped to the floor. Officers discovered a round in the wall by the TV and one on the floor by her front door, according to a police report. A witness sitting in a car a few houses away reported a dark-colored van with darkened windows drove down the street, stopped in front of Harris’ house, then sped away. Police are investigating.

Small Plane Crashes Near Newton

A small plane has crashed near the Newton airport. Police said the pilot reported strong winds at takeoff. The wind pushed the small plane off the runway and into a tree. Officers didn't immediately identify the pilot, but said his teenage son was in the passenger seat. KKCI reports no one was injured.

Stabbing Victim in Stable Condition; Attacker Charged

A Des Moines man was stabbed Sunday night after an argument at Birdland Marina. Police have charged John Thomas with assault with bodily injury after police say he stabbed Jack Daniels at 1900 Saylor Road. Police say Daniels got into an argument with a friend and Thomas told them both to shut up. Witnesses say there was a physical confrontation and Thomas pulled a knife and stabbed Daniels. He's in stable condition.

Pawlenty, Roemer Speak in Iowa Monday

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty spoke yesterday to a group of about 60 in Wakee. He will visit Boone and Fort Dodge this afternoon, stop in Sioux City Tuesday and Council Bluffs on Wednesday. The Register reports another Republican presidential hopeful, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, spoke at the event. Roemer laid out a detailed plan to create American jobs by overhauling the nation’s trade, energy and tax policies.

Iowa City Woman Dies when Tree Falls on Her

Officials say the woman who died after a tree fell on her tent at Lake MacBride State Park was from Iowa City. Iowa Department of Natural Resources identified the woman as 31-year-old Jennifer Lewis. KCCI reports Lewis was camping with her sister and some friends when a storm hit Sunday morning. A tree on private property adjacent to the park's campground fell on Lewis' tent. She was the only person inside. Lewis was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she was pronounced dead

Man rescued after boat capsizes at Clear Lake

Many have headed for the water on this holiday weekend, and with that comes risk. A Mason City man was pulled from Clear Lake after his boat capsized Saturday. Brent Radcliffe was in 60 degree water for about fifteen minutes before being rescued by someone on a personal watercraft. Radcliffe wasn't wearing a life vest and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Online tax payrments encouraged

The Polk County treasurer's office encourages people to pay taxes and vehicle registration fees online to avoid parking problems on Court Avenue. Tuesday is the monthly deadline for property taxes and vehicle registrations. A major sewer project under way on Court Avenue makes it more difficult to find parking and access the county administration building. www.polkcountyiowa.gov is the place to go.

Assault reported on East Eighth

36-year-old Jason Boggs of Des Moines says he and a woman were attacked in the front yard of his home Saturday morning. According to police, Boggs pulled up to his home in the 3500 block of East Eighth Street with Samantha Burchett and there were people in his yard. He told them to leave, and a skirmish followed. Police picked up the attackers a short time later. They've been identified as Josh Paul Sowden and Donald Wayne Brooks, both twenty. Both were charged with assault.

Injured Motorcyclist Dies

One man has died and another has been arrested after a motorcycle collided with a van at a Des Moines intersection. Police say 48 year old James Brown of Des Moines was found lying in the street about 1 a.m. Sunday and died a short time later at a hospital. Police say Brown's motorcycle hit a van that had pulled in front of him. The van driver was identified as 47 year old Rex Pettinger Sr., of Des Moines. Police say Pettinger fled the scene but was arrested a short time later on suspicion of vehicular homicide by intoxication. Jail records show bond was set at about $31,000.

Sunday Crash Injures Motorcycle Rider

A hit-and-run crash on Des Monies' east side early Sunday left a motorcycle rider in the hospital. Police say someone in a van hit the motorcycle near the intersection of University Avenue and East 28th Court. They said the van driver then fled the scene.
Officers said they later found the driver of the van at 2701 East Market St. They declined to identify the driver but said the person was arrested. KCCI Reports The motorcyclist, whose name has not been released, was taken to Methodist Medical Center.

Charter School Grant

The Des Moines Public Charter School Foundation received a $50,000 boost in funding this week from the Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports this new grant's for the school reaching its' first year goals. The charter foundation will use the money to find new donors and for other fundraising efforts.

Rodriguez Competency

A judge has promised a decision by June 28th on whether Santos Rodriguez is competent to stand trial. He's charged in a 2009 hit & run in Des Moines that killed Bruce Mundy. According to KCCI, a medical expert testified today that Rodriguez suffered permanent brain injury from gunshots in a 1999 shootout with police, and he shouldn't have been driving because he's completely incompetent. Mundy's family says if he can't stand trial he should be institutionalized for life.

Recycling at Rest Stops

You may notice a change as you hit the road this weekend. The Iowa Department of Transportation has launched a yearlong pilot project at rest stops near Ankeny, Mitchellville, Story City and Waukee, that allows motorists to dump material to be recycled. You'll be able to drop off cans, plastic, and glass. Officials also aim to raise awareness about recycling and reduce litter on state highways.

Corn and Soybean Planting

State officials say Iowa farmers have met or surpassed last year's quick pace of planting corn and soybeans, but now the state needs some warm and dry weather. The weekly crop report out yesterday shows 98% of the corn crop has been planted, which matches last year. KCCI reports soybean plantings 78% and ahead of last years 72% at the same time last year. State Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says the state needs some warm and dry weather to help the crops grow.

Ciity May Sell Northwest Side Green Space

City staff's recommendation that a 2-acre piece of public green space in northwest Des Moines be classified as “excess property” could help pave the way for its sale. Developers John and Tim Mauro have a plan to build a senior apartment complex next to the Northwest Community Center. The Park and Recreation Board will decide on the staff recommendation today, and then city council has the final say. The estimated fair market value of the land is between $200-and-$250,000.

Grand Avenue Bridge Replacement

Early next year, you may have to plan on a longer commute, because work will be starting on replacing the Grand Avenue Bridge over Walnut Creek. The bridge is expected to be closed from April to October of next year. Des Moines officials tell the Des Moines Register the bridge is almost 100-years old and is now structurally unsound. The new bridge will have a turn lane, increasing the number of lanes to six.

DART Wins National Safety Award

The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority's been recognized with a national awarded as an industry leader in boosting bus safety. The American Public Transportation Association presented DART with its' “Gold Award” in the safety for mid-sized transit agencies. DART’s accident frequency rate has improved from 3.47 accidents/100,000 miles driven in 2007, to 1.02/100,000 miles driven in the current budget year.

Des Moines Red Light/Speeding Cameras Ready

New red light and speeding cameras are in place at several Des Moines intersections. KCCI reports the camera's are ready to go at East 15th and Maple, 19th and University, MLK Jr. Parkway and School, 9th and Grand, and Southeast 5th and Army Post Road. When the cameras are turned on, KCCI reports a 30-day grace period's expected to start where getting caught will mean a warning. after that, a $65 fine for running a red light, and a minimum $65 fine for speeding.

Story County Animal Abuse Arrests

The Story County Sheriff's Office says 2-people have been charged in an animal abuse case. 61-year old Larry Gowin's charged with animal neglect, and 40-year old Tammy Gowin's charged with animal neglect and dog abandonment. Authorities say 2 dogs were found in wire cages, dumped in a ditch along a gravel road north of Maxwell earlier this month. The animals were severely underweight and KCCI reports they couldn't stand without help. They're recovering at the Story County Animal Shelter

Main Street Bash in Valley Junction Tomorrow

West Des Moines residents are invited to the Main Street Bash tomorrow, from 5 to 10p.m. in Valley Junction. The celebration's tied to the National Main Street conference which ends Wednesday in Des Moines. The free event includes art, entertainment, music and food from Iowa’s many cultures. An estimated 1,500 conference attendees will fill the streets in addition to area residents.

Bank Robbery Suspect in Custody

A bank robbery suspect didn't have long to enjoy his loot. Just after holding up the Liberty Bank branch at 4018 University Avenue this morning, Des Moines Police and detectives spotted a dark skinned man in a white shirt and baggy jeans, who matched the description of the robbery suspect., on University Avenue. He was detained, and 26-year old Phoutthasa Prathane of Des Moines now charged with robbery.

Ethics Probe of Political Contributions by Gaming Firm

The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board's investigating campaign contributions by Peninsula Gaming and chief executive officer Martin Stevens and chief operating officer Jonathan Swain. KCCI reports criminal charges against the company and its executives were dismissed earlier this month,. They'd been accused of making illegal contributions to former Gov. Chet Culver's re-election campaign.

Local student's graduation is a triumph

18-year old Molly Frick was seriously injured last week in a car accident when she was hit by a dump truck. She suffered a fractured skull and several lacerations. Beating the odds in more ways than one, she made it to Southeast High School's graduation ceremony over the weekend, and walked across the stage to a standing ovation. She wore a neck brace and will continue her recovery this summer before attending Iowa State in the fall.

Local store could lose liquor license

City Council will consider the liquor license today of a north-central Des Moines store. Forest Market at 2105 Forest Ave. has been generating complaints in recent months about criminal activity near the store. So far city officials say the business has not provided enough audit information to prove it sells enough non-alcoholic goods. The local requirement is, a store must derive at least half of its revenue from food or food-related sales. If city council denies Forest Market a liquor license, the store plans to appeal to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Driver Cited for Ankeny Crash

A dump truck driver's been charged with failure to yield in a serious crash yesterday in Ankeny. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the truck driven by 46-year old Michael Page hit a car driven by Molly Frick at NE 46th Street and NE 78th Avenue. Page wasn't seriously hurt. Frick had to be airlifted tom a Des Moines Hospital.

Ex-Pella Pastor Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Charges

The former pastor of a Pella church plead not guilty this week to sex abuse charges. According to KCCI, Patrick Edouard was charged in March with three counts of abuse, two counts of exploitation and one count of exploitation by a counselor. Edouard was Pastor at Covenant Reform Church. No trial date has yet been set.

DART 25 Years From Now

After public hearings and an online survey, DART knows what riders, non-riders, and local governments that pay for the service want from public transit over the next 25 years. The Des Moines Register reports people want more frequent service, and to more locations. DART's management's challenge is doing both without turning of current riders and making the service too expensive for governments to continue supporting.

6th Avenue Corridor gets a boost

The Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation recently awarded $20,000 to the 6th Avenue Corridor group. The funds will support the integration of art in the streetscape improvement planning process. The new streetscape will have new pedestrian safety features, aesthetic improvements and sustainability concepts. It's part of an overall concept to make pedestrian friendly businesses and provide an economic boost.

Rescued kittens to be put up for adoption

City workers and employees at Simon Tire Service on East Walnut St., rescued the kittens May 11 from a storm sewer drain. Those kittens are being bottle fed by volunteers with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and they should be ready for adoption in a month or so. They were only 4 weeks old when they were rescued.

Juvenile crime up in Des Moines

Police say the crimes have been unrelated - a couple followed and beaten, a home invasion robbery that resulted in a pistol whipping - Des Moines police have made 11 arrests and ten of them have been juveniles. Serious junvenile crimes have declined nationally and in Iowa, and local detectives say this spike is atypical for Des Moines. All five youths arrested for the home invasion will face charges in adult court.

Job searches take awhile

It's taking awhile for the unemployed in Iowa to find a job. Last year, 34,000 Iowans spent six months or more looking for work, a 55 percent increase over 2009. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also says the number of Iowans searching for a job 52 weeks or longer has more than doubled to 19,000. Some analysts say hiring has picked up, but the lengthy job searches may continue for another five years.

Des Moines folks are good with money

Are you feeling fiscally fit? The midwest fares well when you consider financial stability of residents. Lincon, NE ranks number one, then Madison, WI, and Sioux Falls, SD at number 3. Research was based on criterian including personal bankruptcy rates of residents, credit scores, foreclosures rates, and personal debt. Des Moines ranks 4th in the nation.

Gas Prices Down

Gas prices are down again in Des Moines. Just one week ago, the price for the ethanol blend was around $3.87 a gallon. Three days ago, the price per gallon was down nearly a dime to $3.78 a gallon. We woke up yesterday to up to gas selling at $3.69. Drivers filling up during the day told KCCI they're relieved prices are finally dropping before Memorial Day weekend. Others said they're still hoping prices will keep dropping.

Neiderbach Deliberations

A Polk County jury's continuing deliberations in the child endangerment trial of Jonas Neiderbach. The 22-year old's charged with 6 felonies because of serious injuries inflicted on his infant son Ethan in 2009. Doctors testifying for the state say the 6 week old suffered a brain stem injury, possibly caused by shaking, which cut off his air supply and causing permanent brain damage.

Juveniles Charged in Attack on Adults

Des Moines police 3 teens with attacking Cheryl and Leonard Fogle near Hoyt Middle School last week. The couple were attacked after asking the teens to get out of the street so they could drive past them at E 41st Court and Sheridan Avenue. The trio, 12, 13, and 14 years old are charged with assault causing serious injury.

No ICE for Downtown Des Moines

A downtown Des Moines site's off the list of potential homes for a new federal immigration enforcement center. The Des Moines Register reports the property's owner's notified the city it won't be asking for a special use permit to allow ICE to set up shop. ICE wants a new location in Des Moines or one of 11 surrounding communities by October.

Iowa City Building Evacuated

A downtown Iowa City office building's been evacuated after a law firm got a piece of mail containing a white powdery substance.
The building's property manager tells KCCI an employee opened the envelope and called police. They ordered the evacuation of the Savings and Loan Building on the Pedestrian Mall as a precaution until they can evaluate the substance.

West Des Moines clinic to offer women's services, no abortions

A medical clinic opening next month in West Des Moines wants to decrease the more than 6,000 abortions performed in Iowa annually. Informed Choices Medical Clinic will expand a statewide niche of medical clinics that offer a range of women's health services, but not abortions or contraceptives. They'll offer pregnancy testing, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, and beginning prenatal care. The clinic will also teach how abortions work and offer family planning services.

Supreme Court justices visit schools

Iowa Supreme Court justices are leaving Des Moines this week to visit nine eastern Iowa high schools this week to talk with students about the state's court system. The justices said in a release they hope their visits will build upon what the students are being taught and lead to a better understanding of the history and role of the courts.

Ankeny schools under budget

Two new schools are getting ready to open in Ankeny and construction crews are putting the finishing touches on now. Total cost for both the new Ankeny High School and Southview Middle school are running below budget. The school board on Monday toured both sites in the Prairie Trail development.

Woman arrested after throwing a cat at neighbors

Des Moines police are investigating the case of an angry woman tossing a cat from a balconly. Police say 50-year old Elizabeth Marlene Freeborn was arrested on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and simple assault. Freeborn allegedly yelled a neighbors and threw the cat at them. She claimed to have a gun, but didn't threaten anyone with one. Police haven't mentioned any injuries to the cat.

Neiderbach Deliberations Start Today

Jurors are to begin deliberating the guilt or innocence of Jonas Neiderbach today. Closing arguments in the trial where he's accused of causing then-6-week-old Ethan Neiderbach's irreversible brain damage were yesterday. Prosecutors told KCCI they tried to convince the jury Jonas Neiderbach alone inflicted his son's massive brain trauma. But defense attorneys and their medical experts argued there are other logical explanations for the infant's injuries. Jonas Neiderbach did not take the witness stand during the trial.

Iowa soldier injured in combat

An Iowa Army National Guard soldier has been wounded during a combat mission in Afghanistan.
The guard says 19-year-old Pvt. Alexander Meyer, of Ainsworth, was wounded by small arms fire on May 15. The guard says he has been evacuated to a hospital in Germany and will eventually be transferred to a hospital in the U.S. The wounds are not considered life threatening.

State lawmakers sending through fewer bills

Statistics from the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency show this legislative session is on its way to approving the fewest bills in more than two decades. Through Tuesday, 118 bills had passed both the House and Senate and gone to Gov. Terry Branstad for consideration. That's the smallest number of bills sent to a governor in any single session dating to at least 1989, the furthest back the agency has tallied statistics. The average is 197 over the last ten years.

Legal trouble for adoption agency

Iowa officials have moved to revoke the license of a national adoption agency after a trail of botched matches and alleged scams. Iowa's Department of Human Services decided to revoke the license of Abby's One True Gift Inc., based in Waukee, on Monday , but the company has filed an appeal, meaning it can remain in business while the case is decided by an administrative law judge. The agency is one of the largest adoption agencies in Iowa.

Runge Gets Prison

A Polk County Judge's sentenced Wendy Runge to 10-years in prison for her part in the Iowa Film Office tax incentive scandal. Runge was sentenced for fraud this morning, and told the judge she was sorry for what she'd done. But Judge Douglas Staskal criticized Runge for public statements she made in which she took no responsibility for her actions and attacked judges, and prosecutors, and tried to blame her troubles on some kind of political conspiracy.

Des Moines Red Light Cameras

Des Moines is less than two weeks from starting a new automated red light traffic camera enforcement system. Once it goes active drivers will have a 30-day grace period when you'll get warning tickets. After that the tickets will be very real, and must be paid. The Des Moines Register reports some of the poles and hardware for the automated red light system's already in place.

Sex Offender Lawsuit Deal?

A federal judge will decide next month whether or not to accept a deal settling a class action suit by sex offenders being kept locked up for treatment, against the State of Iowa. . The sex offenders say living conditions at the Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offenders in Cherokee was cruel and unusual punishment and violated their constitutional rights. Under the deal, Iowa would [pay $35,000 in legal fees, and make some changes to give patients more access to exercise and bathroom facilities.

Iowa Guard Solider Wounded

An Iowa Army National Guard soldier's been wounded on a combat mission in Afghanistan. 19-year-old Pvt. Alexander Meyer, of Ainsworth, was wounded by small arms fire on May 15. He's been airlifted to a hospital in Germany and eventually returned stateside. A guard spokesperson says Meyer's wounds are not considered life threatening. Meyer's a member of Waterloo's Company A, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry with 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Division.

Woman Held for ID Theft

A Cedar Rapids woman's facing identity theft, theft, and fraud charges. Thew Johnson County Sheriff's office says 35-year old Rosa Ayala allegedly got medical care and prescriptions worth over $10,000 from the University Hospitals in Iowa City, using someone else's name. Ayala's being held on $30,000 bond, as well as for immigration officials.

Police seek Des Moines bank robber

Des Moines Police are looking for a white man who robbed the West Bank at 806 6th Avenue yesterday. The robber handed the teller and note and walked out with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as a white man with blonde hair, wearing round glasses and headphones. Anyone with info should call Des Moines police or Polk County Crime Stoppers .

Des Moines Airport to improve runway

The Des Moines International Airport will get $1.9 million to rehab its runway. The funds will come from the U.S. Department of Transportation and are intended to increase safety. The project is also expected to increase efficiency at the airport and improve economic development opportunities for surrounding communities. This announcement comes after last week's news that the airport will receive $2.3 million to buy land and develop a new runway that has been part of the airport's plan since 2001.

Senate passes abortion bill

The Iowa Senate has passed a bill that would ban a Nebraska doctor from opening an abortion clinic in Council Bluffs. The bill would not prevent late-term abortion clinics in four other Iowa cities. The bill passed on a strict partisan vote, with Senate democrats voting in favor, and republicans opposed. The bill now goes to the House where republicans are in control and it's unlikely to win approval.

Gas prices fall some

Did you notice gas prices dipped a bit yesterday? The local price of gas had risen to $3.90 per gallon for the ten percent ethanol blend. Now most Des Moines area gas retailers have dropped their prices below the $3.80 mark. The price of crude oil also fell yesterday, and general commodity prices have dropped. Speculators disagree on whether the price of gas will continue to drop.

Senior housing or green space? City leaders weigh the options.

Des Moines housing developers want to put a three story, 40-unit senior apartment building next to the Northwest Community Center on Franklin Avenue. That's currently about two acres of city-owned green space. A final decision on whether to sell the bulk of Franklin Field to the developers will require city leaders to balance needs to preserve public green space and offer more affordable senior housing in northwest Des Moines. The situation will be discussed tonight at a public meeting.

Neiderbach Defense Expert Testifies

As expected, defense attorneys in the Jonas Neiderbach trial spent much of yesterday questioning a hired expert who said the injuries caused to 6-week old Ethan Neiderbach were not caused by child abuse. Two more doctors are expected this week to challenge prosecution witness assertions that Ethan suffered devastating injuries at the hands of his father. The clinical neurosurgeon from Washington DC testified Ethan had a brain injury at birth, and the side effects from that were still showing at the time of his death. He called the brain injury inconsistent with shaken-baby syndrome, because there were no signs of trauma to Ethan's spinal cord.

Suspects Wanted in Home Invasion

Des Moines police are looking for 3 masked men who used a stun gun during a home invasion early this morning in the 800 block of East County Line Road. Officers tell KCCI th stun gun was used to torture some of the people in the house. 3-people were hospitalized for their injuries. The suspects got away with a car, handgun, a television, and $500.

Ankeny Livestork Ordinance

Ankeny's ordinance barring livestock may be getting another look from city council. The Des Moines Register reports some residents have inquired about raising poultry. City Manager Carl Metzger says if the council isn't interested in allowing chickens, the ordinance needs to be tightened to remove the opportunity for residents to ask for exceptions.

Three Busted for Meth Fire

2-Des Moines men, and a woman face felony drug and arson charges after a house fire early Sunday at 2412 Prospect Road. Damage to the house is estimated at $15,000. Police tell the Des Moines Register they found evidence at the scene of items used to make methamphetamine; and they think the three were cooking up some of the drug when the container it was in exploded and set fire to the house. the trio are being held at the Polk County Jail.

West Des Moines moves park plan forward

The West Des Moines city council will review a plan tonight for the first phase of construction of Valley View Park. It's been in the works for more than a decade. The long term plan involves $25 million in improvements. The first phase focuses on sports fields.

Man keeps six figures after defrauding Medicaid

37-year old Frank Nwakpa of Des Moines was convicted in April of defrauding Medicaid, by taking nearly $140,000 between January 2008 and September 2010. He claimed to be providing skills to disadvantaged youth by taking them to the mall and to the movies. Nwankpa set up a remedial services company and although he's not a licensed health professional he "diagnosed" children as having certain behavioral or socialization problems and billed medicaid for his time. He's been ordered to pay just $15,000 in restitution.

City leaders discuss public nuisance buildings

Another effect of tight budgets....the money to combat public nuisance properties is dwindling. Des Moines has 181 of these eyesores according to city officials, mostly in distressed areas of north-Central and East Des Moines. Vacant nuisance properties weaken values of surrounding houses and slow development. They can also become dens for drug dealers and prostitutes and targets for vandals and arsonists. Eighteen properties have been on Des Moines' public nuisance list for five to nine years. City leaders are trying to figure out a way to deal with the problem. They've said the first step is to get property owners to be more responsible.

Police looking for suspects in home invasion

A break-in occurred early this morning at a home on Southeast County Line Road. Des Moines police say it happened around 5am and two people were pistol-whipped. A car was also taken. Officers are still looking for the suspects.

Man stabbed early this morning

A Des Moines man was stabbed early today on the city's east side. 37-year old Miguel Turcios was stabbed in the chest and arms in the parking lot of the aparment where he lives on Pennsylvania Avenue. Police say a man wanted the keys to his vehicle and Turcios refused to give them up. Police are investigating.

Car Crashes into Unoccupied House, Driver Dies

One person is dead after a car crashed into a home just south of downtown early yesterday. Police said the driver, Joanna Chester of Des Moines, was dead when they arrived at around 12:30 a.m. Her passenger, Jerry Hereford, 33, was taken to Methodist Medical Center and was in stable condition late yesterday. No one was inside the house. Neighbors told KCCI that a family was in the process of moving in and was not yet living there. An autopsy will determine whether Cester died before the crash or as a result of her injuries.

Suspect Shot at End of Crime Spree

A robbery that became a carjacking, ended with a collision, and a suspect being shot multiple times. Police say 27 year old Robin Brooks of Des Moines has been charged with attempted murder, robbery and theft. It all started at the Tradesmen Community Credit Union at around 12:30 Friday afternoon.

Police say Brooks walked into the bank and told a teller that he had a gun and wanted money. Police say he left on foot. They caught up with him after he'd carjacked a white van from a nearby apartment complex. Police say Brooks then led police on a brief chase before he rammed a police cruiser. Soon after shots were fired by the Des Moines Police, hitting Brooks twice, once in the arm and once in the side.

Polk City Athletics Facilities

Plans to build a new sports field complex, trail, and upgrade other sports facilities in Polk City, are down but not out, despite voters rejecting a $4-million bond issue to pay for it. The Des Moines Register reports City Councilman Dave Dvorak says they're looking at other ways of getting it done. Dvorak's liaison to the parks commission, and says all the groups involved will be meeting to talk about it. City council expected to talk about it the work session before their June 13th meeting.

IASB Votes Out President-elect

The president-elect of the Iowa Association of School Boards is no longer president-elect. Lee Ann Grimley was voted out of the group by members of the groups board of directors, of which she's a member. Why was Grimley kicked out yesterday? Board President Russ Wiesley tells the Des Moines Register: "We're not ready to discuss that yet." In a later written statement he says Grimley couldn't provide the leadership the association needs.

Urbandale ARrest

Urbandale police arrested on Wednesday a man suspected of several people in their apartments. 49-year old Thomas Brown of Des Moines' charged with burglary, assault with a weapon, and harassment of a peace officer. The Des Moines Register says there was a warrant out for Brown's arrest for failing to pay child support. Police arrested Brown at Meredith Drive and Merle Hay Road. Brown was taken to the Polk County Jail.

Urbandale Peace Officer Memorial

Urbandale's having its' Peace Officer Memorial Service 5 p.m. Tuesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, on Aurora Ave. The Des Moines Register reports the service, which is open to the public, will include a tribute to Sgt. Eric Stein of the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office who was killed in the line of duty in April. The Polk County Sheriff, Urbandale, Des Moines and West Des Moines police honor guards will participate.

Police Shoot Robbery Suspect

A credit union hold up in Des Moines ended in gunfire after a car chase. Police tell KCCI a man walked into the Tradesman Credit Union on Second Avenue, and handed a teller a note saying he had a gun. He was handed cash, and ran. Investigators say the suspect then carjacked a van and got on I-235. The chase ended near Hubble and Berson, where police fired several shots at the suspect hitting him at least once. He's was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Iowa DNR Cutting Jobs

Iowa's Department of Natural Resources is tightening its' belt. The Des Moines Register reports Director Roger Lande informed staff today that as of July, the department's cutting 3 jobs in the Geological and Water Survey Bureau, 13-contract jobs at the University of Iowa, 39-currently vacant jobs won't be filled, and 116 part-time seasonal jobs won't be filled either.

WDM Job Fair Monday

About 50 area businesses will be recruiting potential new hires Monday at the West Des Moines Jobs Expo. It's from 10am to 3pm at the Sheraton Hotel, 1800 50th St., West Des Moines. The event will also feature on-site professional development seminars. Among the businesses expected: Des Moines Area Community College, Hy-Vee, Kaplan University, Microsoft, New View Young Professionals, Palmer Group, Physicians Mutual and Upper Iowa University.

NWS Issues Tornado Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for most of central and southern Iowa, including Boone, Carroll, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, and Warren Counties.

H.S. Golf Coach Accused of Driving Team Drunk

A high school golf coach has been charged with drunken driving and child endangerment after being stopped while taking her team to a meet. KCCI reports the Fairfield Community School District's issued a statement saying girls golf coach Susie Steinbeck was pulled over Tuesday morning by the Iowa State Patrol. The district's investigating the incident for possible further action.

Teen Busted for Bank Robbery

18-year old Nicholas Nelson's in the Polk County Jail, charged with 2nd degree robbery from a bank holdup last week. Des Moines Police tell KCCI they have security video showing the robber smiling at a teller, who handed over close to $1400. Nelson was taken into custody this morning at his apartment. A police spokesperson says he recently moved here from Moline, IL.

House overhauls property taxes

The Iowa House has passed a measure overhauling the state's property tax system. The measure goes beyond a proposal by Gov. Terry Branstad to cut commercial property taxes by 40% over five years. It also gradually increases the share of local school budgets the state finances over seven years. When the measure is fully in place it will cost the state roughly $800 million a year. The measure now goes back to the Senate.

West Des Moines police subdue man with taser

28-year old Steven Harreld of Strawberry Point allegedly left Champps Americana restaurant at 101 Jordan Creek Parkway without paying his bill on Monday. West Des Moines Police stopped Harreld a short time later and he was uncooperative according to officers. When he took off running they used the taser to subdue him. Drug paraphenalia was also found, and Harreld is facing numerous charges including theft and forgery.

Dove hunting rules to be reviewed

A new law has already been passed by the legislature allowing dove hunting. The rules will be publicly reviewed today, that would set a 70-day dove hunting season with a 15-daily limit. The Administrative Rules Review Committee will review the dove hunting rules beginning at 2 p.m. in room 116 of the Capitol. The group is expected to meet several times before the rules are formally adopted.

New heat record set Tuesday

Des Moines smashed it's record high by five degrees yesterday, reaching 95. Just about every corner of the state saw record highs. Things get back to normal today with highs in the 80's and the chance of thunderstorms.

Latest in Okland Case

West Des Moines police confirmed Tuesday that a total of four search warrants have been issued in the Ashley Okland case. Tuesday, West Des Moines spokesman Jim Barrett told KCCI's Emily Price that the case now involves four search warrants total. Barrett said the number is not unusual for an investigation like this and involved the search for information or property. Barrett said the search warrants are sealed and would stay that way. He said the status of the case has not changed and no suspects have been named in the case.

Iowa Could Face Problems over Planned AEA Cuts

Iowa could violate federal rules that regulate state spending on special education due to millions of dollars in proposed cuts to the Area Education Agencies. The Senate last week passed a plan that cuts $10 million to Iowa’s Area Education Agencies, the key group that helps school provide services to children in special education programs. House republicans today passed a bill cutting $20-million from AEA's.

Altoona Man Busted foir Firing Gun in Home

37-year old Matthew Kellen's in the Polk County Jail. He was arrested by Altoona Police this morning after officers arriving at his home heard several gunshots. They took cover, and ordered anyone in the home to come out. Kellen was alone in the home. He was taken for a mental evaluation before heading to the jail. KCCI reports Kellen told police he was upset over a recent OWI arrest and a pending divorce.

Capital City Fruit Growing

Capital City Fruit Co. moved to Norwalk from Des Moines in 1981, with 19-people. The company now employs 127, and the Business Record reports the company's planning an expansion, with a new 82-thousand square foot warehouse/office complex that will mark development of a new industrial site on Norwalk's north side. It should be finished next year.

Sebring's Staying in Des Moines

Des Moines School Superintendent Nancy Sebring's withdrawn her bid for the superintendent's job in Boulder, Colorado. She says there';s more work she wants to get done in Des Moines. Sebring says she didn't accept a raise to stay; but she could still get one when the board of education approves her new contract later this month. Sebring was paid $240,000 this year, which includes a base salary of $206,178 and an annuity worth 16.5% of her salary.

Practices questioned at Apollo Counseling and Resource Center

A counseling center in West Des Moines could lose its Medicaid funding, not from budget cuts, but because a state review showed indications of fraud. Apollo Counseling and Resource Center reportedly had billing discrepancies and failed to conduct background checks on employees. An investigation is ongoing. The reviews were conducted as a few clients questioned billing practices and several former employees complained they hadn't been paid. Apollo's executive director, Erin Bustamante, denied the allegations.

Happy robber targets Bankers Trust

Bankers Trust on Euclid Avenue was robbed yesterday and police say it was odd because the robber was very chipper and mild mannered before pulling out a note that demanded the teller put money in an envelope. The robber thanked the teller and walked out of the bank. No arrest has been made yet.

YWCA demolition on hold

The City of Des Moines has received two bids to demolish the vacant YWCA building at 717 Grand Ave. The bids were an average of $572,000 over the city engineer's $1.65 million project estimate. The city wants to explore other options before they commit to a way of getting rid of the building. The YWCA site is viewed as a prime redevelopment location, and it's possible a developer could help finance the demolition.


Iowa will see more passenger trains

Iowa is getting a share of new funding for passenger rail equipment. Federal transportation officials announced plansyesterday for $268 million for the purchase of rail cars and locomotives in corridors in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin. Officials are hoping folks will see that passenger trains are a viable, convenient travel alternative. It's still being decided exactly how much money goes to each state. Officials then will direct how the money should be spent.

Record heat possible

Dangerous heat index readings are also possible today, but severe storms should hold off until at least Wednesday. Area pools are getting ready. Prairie Life Fitness in West Des Moines is filling their pool now, which usually opens Memorial Day weekend. The record for May 10 in Des Moines is 90 degrees, set in 1911. Today could stretch to the mid 90's.

Another Possible ICE Site

An empty warehouse in West Des Moines' been added to the list of possible locations for a federal immigration enforcement center. The new property's in the southeast part of the city, near Raccoon River Sports Complex. Before ICE could set up shop there, The Des Moines Register reports the city board of adjustment would have to hold a public hearing and approve a permitted conditional use permit. The property's currently zoned for general industrial use.

April Des Moines Area Home Sales

Home sales have gained a little steam in the area. The Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS says 626-homes were sold in April, up 10% from march. An Association spokesperson tells KCCI it's a sign that more buyers are coming into the market. The median sale price in April was $142,7-up almost $12-grand from March.

I-335

The Des Moines City Council is expected to hear a proposal tonight to rename the Highway 65/5 bypass around the metro.
KCCI reports the plan calls for asking the Iowa Transportation Department to rename U.S. Highway 65 and Iowa Highway 5 around the metro to I-335. Supporters say the name change would mean more viability for the roadway and would spur more economic development.

Gasoline Prices May Come Down

Analysts say by summer, gasoline prices could be 50-cents/gallon lower than they are now. The price of oil's fallen 15%. Economists say this could provide some relief to drivers who've been digging a lot deeper to fill up. KCCI reports a 50-cent/gallon drop in price would save drivers nationwide $189-million/day.

Big Lottery winners have yet to claim prizes

Checked your lottery tickets lately? Three winning tickets valued at a total of $27.6 million have been purchased in Iowa over the last six months, but none of the prizes has been claimed. A Doc's Stop convenience store in Webster City had a $9.1 million Hot Lotto winner over the weekend. In December, a ticket purchased at a Des Moines QuikTrip store won a Hot Lotto jackpot of $16.5 million, and last month a Powerball ticket was sold in Boone for $1 million. Prizes have to be claimed within a year of the drawing.

Interviewing begins for Court of Appeals spot

Iowa's State Judicial Nominating Commission is scheduled to begin interviewing the first of 25 applicants for a vacant spot on the Iowa Court of Appeals at 1 p.m. today. Four sitting judges and eight women are among the applicants. Interviews end Tuesday and then the commission will begin deliberations immediately. They'll select three finalists. Governor Branstad will then have 30 days to pick the person to fill the vacancy.

Woman in vacant house dies

KCCI reports authorities found a woman's body in the rubble of a home being demolished. Witnesses say the woman was initially alive, but died before Atlanta firefighters could pull her out of the rubble. Firefighters say the building was checked out by contractors before demolition, and no one knows why the woman was there or who she might be. Some who live in the area say the homeless population sometimes slips into buildings looking for a place to sleep.


Woman fired for sexual comments

A Cedar County Sheriff's Department dispatcher was fired for sexual comments and behavior last year, and it's public now because the county has challenged her claim for unemployment benefits. 29-year old Amy Wiley of Lowden made several vile and suggestive comments to others over a two year period, and is also accused of sharing confidential medical information about a colleague. The administrative law judge who presided over the hearing ruled in favor of the county, finding that Willey was guilty of misconduct and should be denied benefits.

Local man has good luck at Indy despite the weather

A local competitor had some good luck at Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend. Weather cancelled the "Hare and Hound" balloon race and the competitors couldn't lift off. So track organizers improvised a competition by having the pilots take turns throwing a marker a balloos basket on the victory podium toward a goal on pit lane. Pat Fogue from Des Moines won.

Gas Prices Expected to Fall

Just shy of $4 a gallon, average U.S. pump prices are about to start falling and could hit $3.50 by summer. The Des Moines Register reports the market changes probably won't be showing up at your gas station away, but it will happen since crude oil prices have come down 15% this week. The decline was part of a sharp sell-off across in commodities this week.

No Traffic Through Dowtown Farmers Market

The Downtown Farmers' Market opens for the season tomorrow with something new: no more waiting for traffic to cross the street. Traffic was allowed to pass through the market on Third Street and walkers had to wait. No more! This year Third Street has been closed through the market. KCCI reports the parking ramp at Third Street and Court will stay open. The market's open every Saturday from 7am to noon through October 29th.

U of I Flood Barriers on the Move

The University of Iowa is sending flood barriers to Louisiana to help communities guard against flooding. They're sending about 12,000 feet of HESCO barriers, which it's had since the 2008 flood. HESCO Bastion asked the University for its' barriers because it didn't have enough on hand to fill Louisiana's order. HESCO will resupply the university and reimburse it for the shipping costs.

Des Moines Reservoirs

The Army Corps of Engineers says outflows from reservoirs on the Des Moines River are getting back to normal now that the Mississippi Rivers starting to recede in Illinois and Missouri. With the river level falling, a Corps spokesperson says there's no reason to hold back water along tributaries that feed the Mississippi River.

U.S. Cellular 4G to Des Moines

U.S. Cellular subscribers have something to look forward to. The company says high speed 4G LTE service will be rolled out in the Des Moines, Davenport, and Cedar Rapids areas this year., A spokesperson says the faster service will speed up web browsing, checking email, playing games and watching videos.

Bank robber flees with $1350

Authorities say a man who robbed a bank branch yesterday in southeast Des Moines got away with $1,350. At the U.S. Bank branch, police say a man handed a note to a teller, demanding money, and took off. There was no word on whether the teller saw a weapon. One bank employee passed out but refused to go to a hospital. No arrest yet.

Farmers Market opens Saturday

The farmers market opens tomorrow. It will be the 36th season for the Downtown Farmers Market, and it opens from 7am to noon tomorrow. About 200 vendors will be selling meat, produce, eggs, prepared foods and craft items, up and down four blocks of Court Avenue. For the first time, the intersection of Third Street and Court Avenue will be closed to vehicles.

Des Moines man arrested for pistol whipping another

33-year old Brian White told Des Moines police that two men broke into his home on Madison Avenue Wednesday morning and hit him in the head with a gun and threatened to kill him. He managed to get out of the house through a basement window and call police. 29-year old Kevin Paul Dyer of Des Moines was arrested on charges of first-degree burglary, possession of a weapon as a felon, possession of methamphetamine, a parole violation and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held without bond Thursday.

Speed, Red Light Cams Coming to Des Moines

If you don't get in the habit of slowing down on Interstate 235 and making sure you stop when the light turns red at intersections around Des Moines, life may get more expensive. Because what the cops don't see, the cameras will. New red light cameras are going up at five intersections and two speed cameras will be installed. One on Interstate 235 and one mobile, to go wherever it's needed on a complaint basis. Red light tickets will be 65 dollars, speeding tickets will depend on how fast you were going.

SBA Disaster Declaration

The U.S. Small Business Administration's declared a disaster for Iowa due to tornadoes and severe storms that hit April 9th and 10th. This means low interest disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. Businesses and private, non-profit organizations can borrow up to $2 million, and that also cover equipment and inventory.

Drug Take Back Stats

The Drug Take Back in Iowa netted 2 and a half tons of unused and outdated prescription drugs in a nationwide event to safely get them out of the house and out of the hands of those who may abuse them, especially teens. A spokesperson for the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement tells the Des Moines Register: there are more Americans abusing prescription drugs than the number of those abusing cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined.

Budget Stalemate

Republican and Democratic legislative leaders say the dispute over the state budget could go on for weeks or longer. GOP and Democratic leasers say their differences aren't getting smaller, they're getting larger. KCCI reports democrats are back home making the case about the impact spending cuts supported by the GOP will have on services. Republicans say voters have them the house and governor's office to shrink government.

Gun Theft Arrests

Police have arrested a 2nd teenager in a series of gun thefts in southern Iowa. 17-year old Tanner Harvey of Afton, was arrested here in Des Moines yesterday for burglary. 18-year old Eric Downey's also charged with burglary. Authorities say 50-guns have been stolen from various homes ion the past 3 weeks. KCCI reports the ongoing investigation involves Afton Police, ATF, Iowa DCI, and the Ringgold and Union County Sheriffs Departments.

State health officials looking for cancer study participants

State health officials are studying ways to improve breast and colorectal cancer screening in Iowa, and they need participants for a new study. They need men and woman between the ages of 50 and 64 who have never been screened for colorectal cancer and women who have never been screened for breast cancer. Participants have to have health insurance and currently live in Iowa. Contact the Iowa Department of Public Health by May 13.

Witnesses detain suspect until police arrive

Witnesses captured a burglary suspect and held him until Des Moines police arrived. The Register says officers were dispatched to a residence just after midnight Tuesday, and learned witnesses had chased the man, caught him about a block away and were holding him for police. 47-year-old Clarence Delmott is being held on burglary charge.

Man arrested in Burlington church fire

Police have arrested a man in a fire that damaged a church in Burlington last month. The Hawk Eye newspaper says 43-year-old Victor Clegg Jr., of Burlington, has been charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary. The fire happened April 16 fire at Union Baptist Church and damage estimates have been around $225,000..

Big Drug Bust

Des Moines police took down a large-scale drug trafficking operation, arresting six people in the process. Narcotics police raided three metro homes early Wednesday, and they tell KCCI what they found is significant. 11 ounces of crack cocaine, they say, enough to put a dent in the local drug trade. Names have not been released yet.

Polk City Rec Project Voted Down

Polk City voters have rejected a $4 million plan to add and expand recreational facilities. The Des Moines Register reports 41% of the roughly 800-voters said yes, and the rest said no. The plan, would have added $2.27 to the property tax rate of $7.90 per $1,000 taxable value, or about $220.57 a year in taxes on a $200,000 home.

Jonhston Underage Drinking Forum

The Johnston Partnership for a Healthy Community, Johnston school district and Polk County Substance Abuse and Addictions Workgroup are sponsoring a town hall meeting at the Johnston Middle School media center, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 9, to talk about underage drinking. The Des Moines Register reports the goal's to get parents and kids talking about underage and binge drinking; plus ways to prevent young people from getting involved in risky behavior. Ankeny Street Work

Traffic will be cut to one lane in each direction on West First Street at Scott Street in Ankeny, starting tomorrow. The Des Moines Register reports the lane closure's expected to last one week, pending weather conditions, and is to install a water main and make street repairs at that intersection.

State Lawmakers Heading Home

No progress on budget talks has led leaders of both parties to send rank and file lawmakers home for the rest of the week. KCCI reports no debate's planned on anything until Monday. While most legislators have cleared out, those working on the budget will stay at the capital to try to hash out a spending plan.

Man arrested for terrorist threat

A Middle Amana factory employee has been arrested for threats to commit acts of terror because of Osama bin Laden’s death. Other employees heard Boubker Lamkadmi say he would blow up Amana, the refrigerator appliance factory because bin Laden was like his friend or brother. He later told officers he was only kidding, according to a news release. He has been charged with the threat of making a threat of terrorism. He'll face the felony charge in court today.

Train accident investigation shows no emergency brakes

Federal investigators say the BNSF Railway train involved in a collision that killed two crew members last month near Red Oak sped up shortly before hitting a stopped maintenance train. The NTSB says the crew was properly warned that the tracks were blocked, but didn't use the emergency brakes. Conductor Patricia Hyatt and engineer Tom Anderson, both died April 17 when their coal train rear-ended another eastbound BNSF train. The investigation may take 18 months to complete.

Urbandale sees increase in burglaries

Urbandale police are on the lookout for theives. Police have received more than a dozen reports of theft from vehicles during the last week of April. In some cases windows were broken out of vehicles to gain entry, but most cases involved unlocked vehicles and items taken included iPods, GPS units, CDs, cash, construction tools and backpacks.. Officers say vehicle burglaries tend to increase with warmer weather, so keep your vehicles locked, and parked in well-lit area if you can.

Walmart employee accused of theft

An employee of the Walmart store on S.E. 14th St. is accused of taking money from his cash drawer on 14 separate occasions. 18-year old Jesse Jordan Moss of Des Moines is charged with second-degree theft, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. He is accused of taking $1,100. He said he took some of the money to help a relative and also to fix his vehicle.

No charges for bus driver after hitting pedestrian

No charges will be filed against Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority driver William Sanders. Authorities concluded Sanders didn't know a pedestrian was running alongside the bus when the accident happened. 60-year old Robert Lee Pate had been drinking alcohol as he tried to catch up to the bus, according to Des Moines Police. Investigators don't know what the alcohol level was or if it was enough to contribute to the accident. Pate is still hospitalized.

Iowa Mental Health Reform

An attempt to reform Iowa’s $1.3 billion mental health service programs would be delayed for 7-months while the issue gets a detailed review under proposals now in the house and senate. put before the house. Members of both parties say parts of the system haven't worked for years, with some residents, especially in rural areas, not getting the same level of care or options available residenrts in urban areas. Each chamber now has proposals to have the state take over running mental health programs as of July 1st 2013.

Questions for Former Adair City Clerk

A state audit's turned up almost $120-grand in improper spending and deposits in Adair. It includes $39,000 in improper payroll checks to former city clerk Linda Nichols and her son Terry who was an on-call employee for the city. The audit's now in the hands of the Adair County attorney's office, the Iowa attorney general's office as well as state and federal investigators.

Casino Smoking Ban Fails

The Iowa House today said no to a bill that would have offered incentives to casino's to ban smoking. The proposal would have allowed casinos to end a process where they must ask voters to approve their licenses every nine years but only if they prohibit all smoking. Under the proposal, after voters approve two consecutive renewals a third would not be needed if casinos were smoke free.

Wal-Mart Worker Charged With Stealing

An employee of the Walmart on S.E. 14th Street's being held on $5,000 bond, charged with 2nd degree theft. Police say on 14 different occasions, 18-year old Jesse Moss pocketed money from his cash drawer. Investigators tell the Des Moines Register Moss pocketed about $1,100. A store spokesperson says Moss drawer started coming up short in the beginning of April, and he admitted the theft when questioned.

Officials hope cameras cut down on school mischief

School district officials in Des Moines could do without trips to schools by the fire department, so they're considering installing more cameras to cut down on small fires in trash cans and petty thefts. The fire department has been called to Des Moines schools 26 times this year to put out 2 small fires. About 40 cameras are being installed in Roosevelt High School as part of the building's renovation.

Jury selection continues in Neiderback trial

Lawyers are questioning potential jury members for the trial of 22-year old Jonas Neiderbach. He's the Des Moines father accused of severely abusing his infant son. Opening statements are expected to begin tomorrow. Neiderbach faces seven felony child endangerment charges involving head and rib injuries suffered by his son, Ethan in July 2009, when the boy was less than 2 months old.

Pawlenty in the area Wednesday

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty is back in Iowa for two days of events beginning today. Pawlenty has formed a presidential exploratory committee, and since he's relatively unknown nationally his showing in Iowa's leadoff caucuses could prove important. He's in Ames today and then will speak at the Westside Conservative Breakfast Club tomorrow in Urbandale. He'll also tour the Pioneer Hi-Bred Research Center in Johnston.

Scammers use bin Laden death for cyber crime

Cybercriminals are exploiting Osama bin Laden’s death to trick people into visiting malicious websites. The phrase "Osama bin laden dead" was the most popular phrase entered into search engines Monday, and scammers used that opportunity to luring people to malicious sites. There are also infected messages circulating on Facebook with links to videos and pictures, sometimes leading to bogus ads by legitimate companies. When the ad is clicked, it leads to a malicious site. If a site promises a photo of bin Laden's dead body, it's probably a trick.

Flags to Half-Staff

Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff tomorrow in honor of an Iowa Army National Guard soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. James Justice, of Grimes, died of enemy small arms fire on April 23 while helping to rescue the crew of a helicopter that made a hard landing. Another Iowa soldier, Spc. Zachary Durham, of Des Moines, was injured. Justice's funeral is tomorrow. In his order on Monday, Branstad says all U.S. flags and state flags under the control of Iowa are to be flown at half-staff tomorrow from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Iowa bin Laden Impact

Officials say there's been no increase in security precautions statewide after thge killing of Osama bin Laden. A spokesperson for Gov. Branstad, says Iowa Department of Homeland Security officials are continuing to monitor the situation, but authorities haven't stepped up security procedures; KCCI reports no threats have been received since his death yesterday.

Branstad Proposes Non Union Worker Raises

Non-union state employees would receive the same pay raises as unionized workers under a proposal from Gov. Branstad.
Democrats criticized the plan, saying this means raises will also go to some of the governor’s political appointees. Branstad and his staff criticized outgoing Gov. Culver in December for agreeing to wage increases for state union employees soon before leaving office, calling the deal “reckless.” Union workers will over the next 2 budget years get raises totaling 6.13%.

Roommate Squabble Turns Deadly near Riverside

Bond's been set at $2-million for 70-year old Thomas Hansen of Riverside. He's charged with 1st degree murder for allegedly killing his female roommate yesterday. Police say Hansen and Sharon Gerot had been arguing, and Hansen fired a shot at her while she was on a lawn mower in their backyard.

Murder Charge in Fight Death

A 20-year-old Harlan man's been charged with 2nd degree murder for the death of 39-year old Jay Casali. Police tell KCCI Colton Benson-Blaine and Casali had an altercation in a home in Harlan March 5th. Casali was taken to a hospital and treated, but he was found dead the next day. The State Medical Examiners office says the Injuries Benson-Blaine cause in the fight contributed to Casali's dearth.

Polk City Referendum Vote Tomorrow

Polk City residents will vote tomorrow on a $4 million plan to add and expand recreational facilities. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the community room at 309 W. Van Dorn St. The Des Moines Register reports the referendum will need over 60% approval to pass. If approved, the project’s cost will add $2.27 to the city’s property tax rate of $7.90 per $1,000 taxable value, or an extra $220.57 a year in taxes on a $200,000 home.

Private Security in Ankeny Schools

Ankeny's school district's one of a few in the country to replace police with private security guards in schools. The Des Moines Register reports 6-Per Mar Security Services employees - three of them armed - started in the schools in March. City officials say community growth's created a need for more police on the street, and Police Chief Gary Mikulec says with cities and school districts tightening their belts, private security in schools could become more common.

West Des Moines to address noise issue

West Des Moines has gotten several noise complaints from residents who live near the city's commercial districts. particularly the outdoor music coming from patios. Those will be discussed today at a workshop following the city council meeting. Some say more clubs have popped up in that district than residents initially anticipated. City council will try to balance the negative effects of noise with the positive effects for the local economy.

US Forces find bin Laden at large compound in Pakistan

So how did it happen?






Through intelligence, US forces were able to narrow down bin Laden's whereabouts to a $1 million compound in Pakistan at the end of a dirt road. President Obama made the decision to send in the troops on Friday morning as he was on his way to survey tornado damage in Alabama. The operation was completed yesterday afternoon.

Wednesday services for Iowa soldier killed

Funeral services for Iowa National Guard Staff Sgt. James A. Justice of Grimes will be held Wednesday in western Iowa, where he grew up. Justice was killed April 23 in a firefight while trying to rescue crew members of a U.S. Army helicopter that crash-landed in Afghanistan's Kapisa province. A soldier from Des Moines was injured in that incident.

Fire risk is high

The National Weather service warns against the potential for grass fires this week. The Des Moines area is about an inch above average for annual precipitation, but slow plant growth has created conditions susceptible to grass fires, according to meteorologists. Crews from the Des Moines, West Des Moines, Norwalk and Northern Warren fire departments struggled Saturday to put out a fire in Des Moines' Water Works Park after sparks from a passing train set between 30 and 40 acres of grassland ablaze.


Military braces for retaliation after bin Laden death

As the world reacts to the death of Osama bin Laden, the US military warns of the risk for retaliation. An enlisted Air Force officer spoke on the condition on anonymity, but told the Raycom News Network that US bases face imminent danger of retaliation. US military bases are taking precautions and have heightend security levels until further notice.
