Iowa Supremes Take Up Steel Wheels

There's a challenge to Mitchell County's steel wheel ordinance, and the Iowa Supreme Court will take it up. Its a ban on steel wheels on hard surfaced roads. Case in point, Matthew Zimmerman, a Mennonite teenager who was cited for driving a steel-wheel tractor on a county road in 2010 and found guilty of violating the ordinance. An Iowa judge agreed with a magistrate's ruling upholding it.
Zimmerman's family says the ordinance interferes with their religious practice. The county says it wants to alleviate damage caused by the wheels, and the ordinance is neutral and doesn't interfere with anyone's religion. The Supreme Court says the main issue is whether the ordinance violates Zimmerman's state and federal rights to free exercise of religion.
